    I finally did it! And DAMN am I proud of myself right now.
    Two of my favorite kinds of music together in one glorious, glorious xenharmonic piece.
    I'm taking a page out of Sevish's book and just making whatever I'd most like to hear, and so far it's been the most rewarding thing I've ever done.
    The tuning is a 9L8s subset of 321edo that I've nicknamed blastoff[17], and can be found here, if you'd like to give it a try:

    I think a lot of people get stuck in a loop where they create what they think will be popular rather than what they actually want to create, and an audience can sense the inauthenticity. Do your thing Jumble.

      “Microtonal” is vague anyway. Sound is vibration and notes that “sound” nice together are vibrations that divide easily into each other. For this reason in western music we arbitrarily arrived on 12 easy “divisions” that make up “standard” equal temperament. You can obviously though just take any given frequency of vibration, call that a note, and then divide it as many time as you feel is reasonable to come up with the other “notes” to play along with it. You can even divide frequencies over 300 times between any given frequency and the next double value of itself (which we hear as the “same” but one octave higher). Most earlier societies had less than 12 that they considered “real notes”

      If u listen closely u will hear some notes sound out of tune but the brain quickly starts to get used to this new tuning with these many new notes so you may not even notice it that much. There are microtonal music where its far more noticeable, try Billabong valley by king gizzard or any of zheana erose pieces on yt

      kinda same. I listen to gleam and don't even get thrown off from the quarter tones. There's both good and bad to this. It means that you can easily enjoy almost any microtonal piece, so long as you warm up to it enough, but at the same time, it makes it harder to create microtonal music, as, at least my ear is less sensitive to "out-of-tune" notes.

    • @uraniidumbra5219
      @uraniidumbra5219  5 місяців тому +21

      That's true!
      The more you work with microtonal music, the less "off" it sounds, and the harder it becomes to make anything that sounds dissonant or alien.
      That said, 12edo starts to sound less and less "default", too- and it can feel strange to revisit the home planet, so to speak!

    Alright, so who's going to let the weirdcore community know there's a new absolute banger to obsess over?
    Really, though, This is such a beautiful piece of music and I love how phantasmagorical this feels, with a new vibe every 2 minutes or so and this loping, meandering melody that has an air of being a musical stream-of-consciousness held together by the beat and bass.
    And the art is perfect. The sunglasses and martini sell it for me.

    It’s like Boards of Canada and Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 had a microtonal baby.
    You should collaborate with a percussionist though. Quantized drums are the same thing in time that equal temperament is in pitch. Microtonal music escaping that rigidity in pitch would also benefit from escaping it in time, using analogous thinking in terms of breaking down into smaller grids and use them to create new shapes. This was fantastic, but it sounds like a demo for an even better piece where the percussionist hasn’t laid down their part yet.

    • @uraniidumbra5219
      @uraniidumbra5219  9 місяців тому +3

      (Positive) First off, that's one hell of a compliment! Thank you!
      Second, I know percussion isn't my strong suit whatsoever, I just put a loop in the background and hope for the best OTL
      I appreciate the constructive criticism, though! I want to collab with someone on percussion, I just don't know who to ask or how! 😅

    • @aonutsihasnouith
      @aonutsihasnouith 9 місяців тому +3

      @@uraniidumbra5219 I was really hesitant to post that. I think you’re bringing a high level skill in the thing you are doing really good at, so that should make it easier to ask. It’s the exact same problem I have with someone like Ichika Nito (guitar virtuoso). Everything else has so much love put into it but the mid drums can’t keep up. You can either get better at showing love to your drum parts, remove them or collab, otherwise you hit a level where no matter how much better you do at the stuff you excel at, it won’t improve the final result.
      It’s a bit like getting a gourmet pasta sauce paired with kraft macaroni noodles. No amount of improvement to the sauce will improve the dish without better noodles. But damn could it be a good dish with them.
      I don’t mean to discourage you, you’re aiming for a very high mark and other than drums I think you hit it right on. I’m a cynical asshole when it comes to criticizing musicians but I see you’re much too good at what you are doing well to match it to drums you didn’t put the same passion into. It’s very clear you’ve got the capacity and soul to be doing truly great work and the only thing between this and truly great work is more love in the drums. Imagine this with a jazz drummer, a prog metal drummer, or a modern classical percussionist being as inspired and skilled as you obviously are.
      I subbed and will be going through all the other works. I’m interested in learning to improvise with microtonality and your pieces have a lot to learn from. Also I really dig the vibe with the hand drawn art, and if you ever get the chance to make a music video I can imagine an animated version going really well with the color changes in the music.

    I'm a few weeks into looking into microtones and hopping back here to let you know this was one of two videos that sent me down that rabbit hole. Looking into incorporating something relatively straightforward like 19EDO in my upcoming dissertation composition as a result. Thanks for the starting point! It sounds great also (feel like that is obvious but saying it anyway)

      update on this: it ended up being 22EDO, and by all accounts it was a resounding success! listening to your work was a big inspiration and a lot of help for this project, so thank you

    Do you plan on adding your work to spotify? Microtonal music hardly appears over there to my knowledge, and this is genuinely my favourite piece of music that utilizes it; being able to listen to this anywhere would quite literally make me ascend.

    Nice tune, and nice choice of instruments. This might work in some kind of lightweight video game, like those classical oldies known from Atari ST, Commodore 64 and Amiga 500.
    Actually i find this music to work as balm for my emotional being (not for my soul, which is beyond suffering and always was, a state of calm and accurate observation) as it were, very similar feeling to when i was young and started some fun computer game (with nice music) just to get a break from all the nastyness of school bullying, scary religious lies, boring indoctrination/"education" and painful family drama.
    So strange to say it, but your music is almost nostalgic to me, dreamy and slightly drugging, similar to those silly but relaxing games.
    It is interesting to analyze what kind of emotions your music evokes inside of me, especially since i am an awakened empath, who feels acutely the consciousness and energy contents (often even the material contents) of all emotions, both my own and those of other people, especially those i have some kind of relationship bond to.
    I bet your Blastoff scale is a MOS alternating between 25 edosteps of 321edo, and 12 edosteps of 321edo. As others have said, you might have just alternated between 2 steps and 1 step of 26edo, especially since you are using a linear temperament MOS scale (two basic step sizes, not more, plus two step sizes of each number of steps), rather than say some more complicated Dwarf scale or 3MOS etcetera.
    But hey it is your choice how complicated you want the tuning to be (compared to overall scale complexity and accuracy in various prime limits), and in any case the result is thoroughly enjoyable!
    You most likely have a 3/2 fifth of this 321edo scale (185 edosteps), which is close to the patent val fifth of 26edo (15 edosteps), rather than the native patent val 3/2 of 321edo (188 edosteps).
    As a hypothesis i assume you are using purely tuned octaves (you don't have to!), in that case your 4/3 fourth (136 edosteps of 321edo) would be off from the 321edo patent val by 3 edosteps as well, and in any case close to that of 26edo (11 edosteps).
    Your 5/4 major third i assume is 99 edosteps of 321edo, 4 edosteps off from the 321edo patent val of 103 edosteps, close to the 26edo one of 8 edosteps.
    Your 6/5 minor third would then be 86 edosteps rather than the patent val of 84 or 85 edosteps (the 321edo patent tuning is inconsistent in the 5 odd limit).
    No idea if you are using any 7-limit intervals, but in that case they would most likely be close to those of 26edo, rather than to the patent vals of 321edo. Too tired right now to calculate the values of those intervals (7/4, 7/6, 7/5) right now, but i know how to do it, and similar things for higher limit intervals.

      First off, as a creator, I *live for* in-depth feedback and analysis. You have no idea how much it means to me to get such a lengthy comment in my inbox! (genuine/positive)
      Secondly, this is all technical information and mathematics that I would not have known how to describe in words-- I have very little mathematical ability and my thought process to make this track was literally going "huh that sounds neat" and running with it lmao
      I play solely by ear and intuition, I don't really understand even regular old 12-tet music theory let alone the *astronomical* complexity of the theory behind xenharmony, so hearing about this stuff and seeing it laid out like this is genuinely really interesting for me to see!

      And you are correct about 25 and 12 being the step sizes! I typed those two numbers in at absolute random and copy pasted them until they added up to 321 in Scale Workshop.

      Hell yeah!
      The higher number edos seem intimidating at first, but really you just use a much smaller subset of those pitches. This particular song uses 17 tones in a 9L8s pattern, which I've nicknamed blastoff[17].
      You can get some really unique sounds from the bigger tunings this way, and they often have fun memorable names like Godzilla etc.

    This feels oddly not even microtonal. I think that, for such large numbers like 321edo, our ears are actually very accustomed to the way the notes are harmonized, because a lot of music that's not microtonal in theory uses a lot of unsion detune (with just a few cents of detune) in practice. So, in other words, some of those notes with a few cents up and down of unison may very well find a place here, in these 321edo scales / subsets of notes. Beautiful composition nonetheless!
