    ******************************************************************************
Updates on the closing of a Florida plant that should be converted to worker co-op, oil company profits VS the social damage they do, how mega-corporations (Walmart, Amazon) are taking over the grocery business and the social purpose and the meaning of the "middle class". In the second half of this week's episode, Prof. Wolff interviews Jared Yates Sexton. The discussion focuses on his latest book, "Midnight Kingdom" and how the U.S. practices social control by spinning stories the public sees and hears.

I’m an Aussie. I love the American people, but I have a great dislike for the American government. The government has killed more innocent civilians in such a short history than any other government in all of history. It must have been a great ride to the top, but it is a long way down. Hold on and enjoy the ride.😮

As an American who also hates what the American government has become, I am always curious about the contradictions that leftists inadvertently create by your positions. Assuming that your analysis is correct that the American government has “killed more innocent civilians than any other government in history”, this opens up a question.
Why would leftists like Wolff want to feed a monster like that with more tax money than it already has? The US government is a multi trillion dollar corporation that uses at least a trillion of that per annum to create bigger and better ways to kill people and destroy things. If your positions made any sense whatsoever, you would want a smaller US government, with less resources to oppress and destroy innocent civilians across the globe, not more.
      Tell me I’m wrong.

Often, job titles are changed to 'manager' to prevent those jobs from unionizing. A manager is part of management.
The true Middle Class basically hinges on being able to have a 40 hour work week and commensurate pay to make it work. The Middle Class were the people who afford their time to volunteer as Boy Scout leaders, team coaches, and volunteer for charity groups. They also paid tithes in church. The Working Class has to scrounge for money and unfortunately that eats up any spare time. The Upper Class doesn't do those sorts of things. So quite a lot depends on a Middle Class existing, and that in turn depends on job stability, fair pay, and 40 hour work weeks. Once those are gone, everything goes with it.

I think we had a bright shining moment when there was a "middle class". That is when all of Europe and Asia decided to blow everything up and left North America alone. That gave us a monopoly and the oligarchs loosened their grip. The system was set up. You got a 30 year job and a 30 year mortgage. After that you had a pension, you had a paid off house, medical from medicare, and you could retire. The baby boomers, which I am a part of, pulled up the ladder and that went away.
We bought into Reaganomics and gave away everything to the oligarchs as long as they didn't touch us. Now that selfishness is coming to roost.

The U.S. economy relies on ongoing credit and debt generation for sustenance. The Federal Reserve is expected to increase the money supply, leading to further debt accumulation for the average American. Meanwhile, foreign nations continue to desire the U.S. dollar, despite their own economies facing significant challenges, some even worse than that of the U.S. This situation raises concerns about who will ultimately bear the consequences of these economic dynamics.

As a 72 year old black American woman who no longer lives in the US and has been an emigrant in Mexico for several years, none of this is news to me. I’ve always looked at white people with an eye of distrust since I was little and was spat upon by a little white boy on my way to school in a recently integrated community, for no reason whatsoever. White people even back then were very dangerous towards black people, but so long as the economy was good it didn’t really matter to them if minorities were economically deprived, but when things changed and they started getting hit it became a serious problem. My main concern is that the US has all those nuclear weapons and I’m afraid the wrong right wing Christian fascist is going to one day get in power and get control of those weapons and then the whole world will be in jeopardy. Just my opinion.

The share of people in the U.S. who identify as #White has been #declining, falling from 64% in 2010 to 58% in 2020, according to the new #census data. This trend stretches back several decades: Non-Hispanic White people declined as a share of the U.S. population from 1980 to 1990 (80% to 76%) and in every decade since then. White population in the U.S. that identifies with a single race is expected to fall below 50% by 2045, according to Census Bureau projections. The White population is older than other groups and aging faster, contributing to a lower birth rate and an increased number of deaths. In addition, immigration is not a source of significant growth for the White population. Immigrants account for a significantly smaller share of the White population than of other groups, in particular are Asians 6% Blacks 12% Hispanics 20%+; The share of people in the U.S. who identify as #Hispanic is #rising fastest in the U.S. since 1980's; From 2010 to 2020, Hispanics grew from 2.5 million to 18.9 million as a share of the U.S. population.

Now that a supermarket owner and a car salesman have both become so rich they can afford a company space program, while infant mortality in their home nation is lower than some developed economies, the whole dream has become ashes.
Never once thought that we shouldn't go into space until all the problems at home are fixed - that would be absurd. But if levels of inequality have become so high that individuals can fund space activity essentially out of their own pockets, then things have gone badly wrong.

    Professor Wolff,
I think it would be a really great topic to discuss exactly how large the surplus extracted by employers is, perhaps over time if data permits. Just through my own research, I found the average US worker in 2015 produced around $107/hr in value for their employer. Compare that with the average hourly wage in 2015 at around $21/hr, and I think the problem becomes very clear. I believe that would do a lot for the average worker to understand just how exploitative capitalism is, and why they should oppose it. It would be a great way to reach people with something concrete they can easily wrap their minds around. I believe any worker with a reasonably critical mind confronted by that objective data would immediately understand why it's not right for a small group of people to appropriate that wealth, and why its handling should be a democratic process instead.

You might try "This View of Life" by David Sloan Wilson for an alternative perspective,
or more directly, Michael Hudson and Steve Keen, whose presentations of
the "present reality" and its causes, bear little resemblance to that of Wolff,
      historically or economically.
These comparisons demonstrate Wolff's ignorance of capitalism, Marx and
history itself, as well as, that of human nature...so that one cannot claim
to understand and agree with Wolff, while simultaneously claiming that a similar
understanding and agreement exists with any of the above.

Frankly I do not care if some poor person is sneaking across the boarder into the US. I too would use all means necessary, both legal and illegal, to ensure I have a better life. And even more so if I had a family.
My concerns with illegal immigration is that the migrants have a greater chance of being abused or exploited since they are here "illegally".

    • @JP-fb8ni
      @JP-fb8ni 6 місяців тому +3

While you're primarily viewing illegal immigration through the lens of individual morality or risk, let's take a moment to look at it through the lens of class struggle.
Capitalist society is known to depend on a pool of cheap labour to maintain high profits. Often, immigrants-particularly illegal ones-are exploited and subjected to unfair working conditions as they provide that pool of cheap labour. And they may not even be offered minimum wage or may even be overworked without being adequately compensated due to their vulnerable, undocumented status. So, rather than merely focusing on the legality or illegality of the immigration process, we should instead look deeper and consider how the structures of capitalism encourage and benefit from this exploitative system.
On another note, immigration (illegal or legal) can also be viewed as an effect of the global capitalist system. The dire conditions that push people to immigrate-economic inequality, violence, insecurity-are more than often related to global capitalism's effect on developing countries. Instead of blaming individuals seeking a better life, we should instead scrutinise and challenge these systemic issues.

The reason the border is open is because the US economy is floundering, and with it, the US dollar. This is because without a growing population, the US cannot keep up with the GDP of foreign nations, particularly BRICS. The native born US population is far below replacement level. So what's the solution? Open borders. Quite simple actually, and the cheaper the labor the better.
The capitalists who remain patriotic to the US dollar are too proud to see the writing on the wall. They never thought to pay US citizens enough to raise children. Instead, they're screaming into an echo chamber about open borders as the US dollar approaches it's downfall from the world's reserve currency, clueless to the fact that they caused it. Those capitalists who are smart will diversify their investments in other currencies as the world's economy globalizes. Still though, the US market will remain large enough to stay relevant, just not like it used to be.
If you really want to help this nation, your best bet is to start a worker co-op and hire some immigrants and native born citizens alike to spread goodwill. The economy is going to get rough in this country as the war mongering politicians continue to dump money into the defense budget. It's going to be the fall of the Roman Empire 2.0, characterized by overexpansion of the military, political corruption, and collapse from within. The best we can do for each other is forget our differences and consolidate or the globalizing capitalistic machine will chew us up and spit us out. Avoid a civil war. Plant a garden. Trade goods and services directly with your community. F*ck the middleman that seeks to siphon the working class value creation out from under them. Support small, local businesses.

Today a horrible clannish, ugly inwardness and cowardice is everywhere...hoarding, suspicion, 'correct' rules for religious obligations without sincere warmth for others or respect for them as brothers and sisters. What bomb went off under all of them?

And because i had to drop not only out of college and the workforce to be a caregiver for my 90 year old grandma, I was invisible so i was not eligible for anything. She also did not qualify for any help for the government because she was not sick or injured, which was what i was trying to prevent by taking care of her. I also didn't qualify for government healthcare because i was not employed. If not employed, you pay full price for health care. If working and poor, tiu get inexpensive healthcare. If working and high earner you pay a lot for healthcare. Now im not working but have money from inheritance, so i pay $402 month for basic healthcare just so im not bankrupted from an accident. Im only 42 and healthy with no problems. My health insurance would cost $80 a month in Thailand and be better quality.
