My late mother-in-law was in the audience at the Canton Civic waiting for him to show up. He canceled shows all the time, so when it was announced he'd died the crowd started booing and getting irate. They thought it was just another excuse. She said they played several songs after, which was seen as another stalling technique. Eventually all the musicians there sang, "I Saw The Light" which caused an uproar with the crowd, followed by intense wails and freak outs when they realized it was true.
She told me it was so surreal and she'd never forgotten how the night went from one of excitement and anticipation to mourning.

This is actually how it is portrayed in an article I read online somewhere. In 1952 he missed more shows than he made. People had pretty much written him off as a live performer at this point. For once, I am inclined to believe a UA-cam OP. Thanks for sharing.

Roy Jiminez I agree but you have to remember that it’s nowadays country and Zack Brown band in people like that don’t see the significance of Hank Williams because they don’t realize that they’re making horrible country Hank Williams sr came from the time when it was real country music

The real country musicians with enough respect to do something like that are long gone. Country music is ruined and many singers are just puppets. Great idea though. Maybe the township should spring for it. The tax payer is who pays for these things these days.

"If the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise..." Yay! I love Hank. And I'm from WV. Glad to see you passing thru, as I haven't lived there for a long time, and get back rarely. I think you covered some old mining ruins, closer to my hometown awhile back. I was born in Moundsville & raised in Morgantown, moved to L.A. as soon as I turned 21. It's sad so much of that beautiful mountainland has been destroyed by big industry concerns. Some of the oldest og woodland in the country exists in that region.

Hank was 29 biological yrs. at his death, but way upwards of that psychologically or spiritually. What we might call an "Old Soul". "When the Lord made me - he made a Ramblin' Man". Two other ahead-of-their-time old souls in the music genre come-to-mind ---Jim Morrison and John Fogerty.

His driver said in a interview his heart basically exploded. Sad story. They were heading to a show and hank was laying in the back seat with this cowboy hat over his face and a blanket over him sleeping. The driver knew something was not right at some point and pulled over asked for directions to nearest hospital and was pronounced dead when arrived.

Hey Dan about 20 to 30 minutes away from the hilltop house in Harper's ferry, there is a bar the rainbow road. U should stop in there the next time ur close. That's where the filmed some of the movie called sweet dreams. Omg when u go in and u look at the pics and autographs from everybody from pasty cline to Hank . They all played there. It's a pretty good time and the owner is old school a real cool guy. The story's that man has incredible. Your safe when u go in he don't allow any crap in that place. Well I was thumbin' from Montgomery, I had my guitar on my back...
..when a stranger stopped beside me in an antique Cadillac.
He was dressed like 1950, Half drunk n hollow eyed...
... he said . "It's a long walk to Nashville, would you like a ride son"
Well, I sat down in the front seat, he turned on the radio...
...and them sad ol' sounds coming out them speakers was solid country gold.
Then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale when he asked me for a light...
...and I knew there was something strange about this ride.
He said "Drifter, can you make folks cry when you play and sing?"
"Have you paid your dues, Can you moan the blues, Can ya bend them guitar strings?"
He said "Boy, can you make folks feel what ya feel inside?"
"Cause, if your big star bound, let me warn ya it's a long, hard ride."

Yes! Another great song about Hank, is "Midnight in Montgomery," by Alan Jackson. Hauntingly🎶🎤🎸🎶 beautiful, gives you goosebumps & chills❄. We had a lake house, that was about a 45 minute drive, one way, to Montgomery, AL. If we needed to shop for clothes & necessity, that's where we went. It was usually juat me and 2 year old daughter. If we stayed past dark, it never failed, that song played on our way home, sometimes 2-4X's. Even @ that age, my daughter loved it, and never wanted me to turn to a different radio station. (Even if we did, that song would be playing) Also, lots of Railroad tracks and
crossings, and we had to stop for a train 🚂 to come thru, blowing his horn. By the time we got home, I was completely freaked😨 out. lol Mommy had to have a "drinkable spirit."🍸🍸, and daughter had to have bottle and bedtime 🍼🛌🐑

I'm currently living in West Virginia and I know that this place really isn't far at all from where my husband's mother and all of her side of the family are from the area in which you filmed this. His mother is from a small town called Gauley Bridge, Hilltop & Oak Hill (from what she has just told me) aren't very far from each other at all...maybe 15 miles or so, and she also told me a few minutes ago that she was just a young girl at the time, but, remembers when they found Hank Williams in his car. She was living at home at the time in Gauley Bridge. I showed her this video and she just couldn't believe that anyone really remembered this happening there. (she also just informed me that she was a huge Hank Williams fan at the time too..lol).

The autopsy report says there was only a 'trace' amount of alcohol found in HW's system. So, this is false reporting, he did not die of over drinking alcohol. He died of respiratory failure and a blocked ventricle due to morphine, heroin, and Chloral hydrate, a sedative, also called a hypnotic. Chloral hydrate slows the activity of your central nervous system. This medicine has both fast-acting and long-lasting sedative effects. The autopsy also stated that HW had been beaten very recently. He had evidence of being kicked in the groin, a cracked rib and bruises all about the body, a huge welt protruding from his head, a few lacerations and a very recently bandaged hand. No explanation has ever been given for why he was beaten or when or by whom. He was born with Spina Bifida, a very painful spine condition. He was also an alcoholic from age 11. His father had PTSD, which they called shell-shock back then, and was confined to a V.A. Hospital after WWI.
I'd like to know why no one talks about Charles Carr getting a speeding ticket that night and that he also appeared in front of a judge and paid that ticket. Who else saw Charles Carr that night? And what about the supposed hitch hiker Charles Carr said he picked up? He was said (by Carr) to be a soldier. What happened to him? Why was he never found? Why was there no investigation into HW's death? Beaten about the head, injected with morphine, unconscious when put into the car, driven to the next gig in an ice storm? What happened to his hat? It was said he only had a t-shirt on when he was taken from the car. Where was his shirt? Something is just not right about this whole thing.

I read every bio almost on Hank, none mentions anything about a hitchhiker, he was beaten earlier where I don't know, Hank carried pistols often, and he got into bar fights a lot, I think he got beat up in Alabama before he left on tour

    • @ikeyschultz4969
      @ikeyschultz4969 2 роки тому

You have your facts wrong. Carr never admitted to picking up a hitchhiking soldier. However, the state patrolman who stopped him did report seeing a third person, dressed in uniform, in the vehicle. Which is odd because this was before Carr (or in other accounts Williams himself) solicited the relief driving services of Don Surface. What is weird, to me anyways, is that Carr had reported he dropped Surface off before driving Hanks body to the Oak Hill hospital. Yet other account report Surface was absolutely present when Hanks corpse was delivered to the hospital. Additionally odd is that I have never seen any reports with Surface’s account of the events. I believe he was called on to view the body (as part of an official jury) though I could be wrong.

While watching this I was sure that I went to a Skyline drive-in as a kid in NSW Australia. Turns out there was a chain of them. Interestingly the first one opened 18th of Feb 1954 just over a year after Hanks death. I wonder if this and any bearing on the name they chose for the American style Drive-ins. Got to be more than a coincidence.
    Keep up the great work.

it is rumor here in knoxville that he died here. he left the andrew johnson hotel downtown and it was said he was dead when they put him into the car. They say you can still see his ghost walking in front of the old hotel.

no you are wrong. The place in the video is the place where he was first documented and seen dead by another person. The actual death could have taken place at any of the stations along the way. The video is accurate as to the place of death and its well known they cannot document where he exactly died--thus the video is correct as can be known The last words were in Bristol "no i dont no fucking hamburger"

You should go there during snowy season. Been there, done that. When I went to West Virginia around January 2016, it felt like a dream to me. One morning there I walked outside and saw that everything was covered in white. And there were still snow flurries falling, too.
