  • Hello and welcome to Steel Picking! In this video, I show a knee lever that you can add beyond the standard four, or if you want to replace one of your existing knee levers with this one. It is a great lever with a wide variety of uses. We discuss its uses and applications in this video as well as show some licks that can be used with this lever.
    If you have any other uses for this knee lever, feel free to share in the comments section below.

    Great lesson Aaron. One of THE best. With your, and your fans indulgence me, I would like to tell a true story about this lever on the PSG. Sorry it is long. If it's too long Aaron, I don't care if you delete it. Here goes:
    Several months after Buck Owens recorded "Together Again", he had a show in Miami, Fl. I went there to see Tom Brumley. So I met Tom as they were getting out of the Bus; and I said I wanted to ask you a question". He quickly responded, "You want to know HOW I got that lick in the turnaround of Together Again". I said, "how in the world did you know that?". He said, "Because steel players every where are asking me how I did that lick, LOL"
    He went on to say, "Come on backstage and I will show you how I did it". I was thrilled beyond describing it. WOW! And he did, and we became friends; that lasted until he died. Now the REST of the story!
    Years later I had the pleasure of visiting Tom in Branson, Mo. And when he was driving me to his home I said, "Tom, a lot of PSG steel players are arguing with me about HOW you got that lick on Together Again!. They say you did it with a knee lever".
    He retorted, "They argue with ME!. So I tell them, that would be quite a trick, since the PSG I used on that recording was a Fender 1000; and it had NO knee levers on it!"
    We laughed and laughed. Later he was gracious enough to play at my show in Atlanta in 1997 ("Steel Guitar Extravaganza") and when he played that song, the audience went crazy, and I cried. He got 4 standing ovations. One of the greatest thrills I have ever had.
    I miss him terribly.
    May Jesus rest his precious soul.

    Your lessons are really appreciated and I learn from them; however, I would like to see the levers and pedals while you play. Most videos I watch show only the top of the instrument. Tony Brown’s videos show the front view with the action below and above. Thank you for your lessons!

      On our older videos we only had the one camera view. Check out the newer ones. It does help and we are glad we were able to get more equipment to film the newer stuff. Thanks for your support and keep picking!

    The first time I tried this one, it was too advanced for me. Now a few years on, I get what you're teaching and can bring it into my playing. Feels good! Thanks for being such a good teacher.

    Hi Aaron; I have an old 1974 Emmons 10-string E9 with just an E to Eb knee lever and three pedals and I'm having a blast learning how to play my PSG. I really enjoy how super helpful you are with your lessons and have learned a lot from you. I've even adapted many of the licks in this video even though I don't have the B to Bb lever.
    Thank you so very much for all you are doing.
    I'm considering sending my guitar away to North Carolina and having three more pedals installed. I am in Arkansas. I am only reluctant because I will miss playing it while it's gone.

    Im relatively new at PSG and I kept hearing this particular sound that I really wanted to know how it was done. Well, turns out that its this lever and I already have it on my Emmons but I just didnt know how to use it. I need to adjust it a little for comfort but am very excited to try and incorporate it. Thank you very much!!!

    Very good information, I don’t have this knee lever change, although I’ve wanted it and needed it for some time now. I can certainly see the gains in making the conversion. I believe I’m in on this Idea. I can imagine using this in fills, padding, single note solos. Yes indeed must have it. Thanks again Aaron and Merry Christmas and happy New Year in every way and every day.

      Bruce, glad to help. I will take a new pull i.e. pedal or knee and just make myself use it in every song while I am playing. If after using a new pull I just can not get comfortable with it or find a good use for it I look into changing it out. But I feel this pull is a useful one to have.
      Thanks! Aaron

    Hi Aaron, you're playing is simply inspiring. The tone and vibrato you use sounds like heaven. How ar you doing the lick at 8:16? kind regards, Bill

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  5 років тому

      Thank you so much, Bill! I am basically just playing C chords on the strings 5 and 8 such as first fret with the E knee lever, third fret A pedal, 8th fret no pedals, 11th fret A and F. The C7th lick is 15th fret 4 6 B pedal down, 14th fret B and Eb knee lever, 13th fret 4 and 5 strings with E knee lever. This lick was just me messing around, ha ha, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what I was playing.
      Keep picking!

    I really liked this video. My B lever right going left only lowers the 5th string on my u 12. My vertical lever raises my 1 and 7 F# to G. I really don't know how to use that F# lever very much, it would be great if you could do a lesson on it too. I really like your lessons. Thanks

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  6 років тому

      Brian, will do. I use the F# to G to get a 7th chord in the pedal down position. 10 fret strings 8,7,6,5 F# to G knee and A,B pedal would be a G7.
      Thanks again!

    Great video, thanks Aaron! In the case where you have A and B pedals down and depress the B to Bb knee lever to get a minor chord, do you need to have split tuning as an option on your guitar?

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  Рік тому

      Thank you very much, Nathan, glad that you enjoyed the video! You can actually achieve this without split tuning by holding down the B pedal and releasing the A pedal by a half. So, if you played strings 5, 6, and 8 open with AB down, that would be an A. If you release the A pedal by a half to where it is only raising the fifth string to a C note while still having the B pedal down, you would have an A minor chord. So, that will achieve the same chord without having split tuning.
      Keep picking!

    It would be great to incorporate a PSG that's tuned to a lower register into my post-industrial band. Some of those stank chords are great.

    Aaron - as typical, great job. I assume you have your B to Bb's on your Vertical lever? Thanks for great ideas

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  6 років тому

      Thanks! Yes, this seems to be the best placement for me. I remember an article by Jimmy Crawford where he stated he tries to place his pedals and knee so that he could get as many combinations as possible. I use the E to Eb and B to Bb together; so you need to have them placed where it would be practical.
      Thanks Aaron!

    I recently bought a Sho Bud Maverick and the thing thats confusing me are the the two knee levers. For some reason the left kneel ever affects strings 4&7, shouldn't this be 4&8 ? Also the right knee lever affects strings 2&8 ? Is this right ? Does anyone know why the previous owner would have configured it this way?

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  11 місяців тому

      Sounds like he was trying to get four knees out of the two. Best to have strings 4,8 E,s to Eb lower on one lever and strings 4,8 E,s to F raise on the other lever in my humble opinion. Let me know what you come up with. Keep Picking!

  • @chuckspears271

    My double neck has b lower and I really miss it. But I use my f# raise quite a bit, what do you think about replacing the 9th string lower with that b lower?

    • @SteelPicking
      @SteelPicking  5 років тому

      I think the B to Bb would be a good choice. I use that more in country type music. The 9 lower I use in playing more contemporary chord voicings.
      Hope that helps.
