Lyrics
Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin'
When he was eight years old
A little girl came through the front gate holdin' a fishing pole
His dad looked down and smiled, said we can't leave her behind
Son I know you don't want her to go but someday you'll change your mind
And Johnny said "Take Jimmy Johnson, take Tommy Thompson, take my best friend Bo
Take anybody that you want as long as she don't go
Take any boy in the world
Daddy please don't take the girl
Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Ten years down the road
He held her tight and kissed her lips
In front of the picture show
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said "If you do what I tell you to, there won't be any harm"
And Johnny said "Take my money, take my wallet, take my credit cards
Here's the watch that my grandpa gave me
Here's the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl
But please don't take the girl
Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Five years down the road
There's going to be a little one and she says it's time to go
Doctor says the baby's fine but you'll have to leave
'Cause his momma's fading fast and Johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
Take the very breath you gave me
Take the heart from my chest
I'll gladly take her place if you'll let me
Make this my last request
Take me out of this world
God, please don't take the girl
Johnny's daddy

My dad used to sing this to me, and he isnt dead or anything... but he sang it to jimself the other day and I was in tears... this song will always have a very special place in my heart, and I will almost always cry when I hear it.
This song is a masterpiece, i don't listen to an awful lot of country but this song paints such a beautiful story in all of our heads showing how when growing up you go from not appreciating things in life to willing to give up your life for them, words cannot say enough for this legendary song.

I was raised with my mom singing this song to me. I must have asked her to sing this song to me at least twenty times per day from the time I was two years old up until I was eight or nine. "Mommy, sing me 'Johnny's Daddy Was Taking Him Swishin'."
To this day, this is one song that will always hold a special place in my heart, and when I have a child, I'll raise him/her singing this song to them, too.

Tim McGraw is an exception to the rule of hating country, even someone who was raised on hating country by a woman who hated country I adore a lot of what I've heard from this wonderful man. Excuse me while I go cry in the corner
Reminds me of driving long nights with my mom and step dad in the winter after picking me up from my dad's. We would listen to this as we went up the mountain leaving the city behind every winter break. I miss it. Things sure do change in life.

I always remember when I was five most likely younger (3-5), I was in the passenger side, the windows were rolled down and the dark night air was blowing. This song was playing and I remember singing to it or just thinking the lyrics. This song used to be the song me an my sisters and Mom used to like and sing. It was my favorite even though I didn't listen to a lot of country or even know what genre was. All my family was packed in the car just listening. And I don't know why I even remember this moment and where we went. (We slept at someone's house for some reason.) But I'm glad I remember it and this song.
Hit his knees not hid but thanks for the great effort my pawpaw used to sing this to me but now he's with Jesus and i would give anything to see him and my uncle and other pawpaw and other pawpaw they told me never let anyone hurt me but it's too late for that now but i miss them and love them so much please pray for me and my family and my baby cousin she is barely 2 years old and she is missing because her dad took her and they are both missing so thanks love you all
