The fact that after having 25 goals and 14 assists 39 G/A in all competitions including another season where he had 10+ goals and 10+ assists is seen as a bad season and he’s seen as “finished” and “washed” meanwhile other players who have those sort of stats is seen as a “Ballon Dor frontrunner”, it tells you how good he has been in the last couple of years. At the start of the season he was on fire and was playing some of the best football of his career. He was regularly scoring goals game in game out and was impactful in a game even when he wasn’t playing well getting either a goal or an assist at one point in the season he led the premier league in goals and assists and he showed no signs of slowing down. He was the main reason why Liverpool was actually in a title race for the Premier League and they were also in contention to win every competition and he was getting “best player in the world” shouts and was seen as a “Ballon Dor contender” and he was set up for collective and individual success in 2024. The reality is that the narrative in football changes so quickly and some of that is down to recency bias and a player being a victim of their own success. After coming back from injury when he was away at AFCON, Salah hasn’t been the same player he was at the first half of the season and his poor run of form coincided with Liverpool’s season unraveling because they went from being in contention to win a quadruple and were top of the premier league to ending the season with the Carabao Cup. It reminds me of the 2021-22 season where Salah started the season on fire as everything he touched turned to goals people saw him as the best player in the world and was seen as a Ballon Dor candidate and as a result of his form, Liverpool were competing for a quadruple. After losing the AFCON final, he came back from international duty and while he won the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker of the Season award for having the most goals and assists in the league, he suffered a dip in form and it coincided with Liverpool missing out on the Premier League title and lost the champions league final in the same week in a span of 6 days. He was a shadow of his usual self he was missing more chances than he did before very wasteful in front of goal he wasn’t impacting the game and looked very sloppy too and he was benched for a couple of games and even had a disagreement with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline. You’re telling me that he went from being in Ballon Dor talks to “finished, washed, selfish, overrated”, “Liverpool need to sell him, Liverpool are a better team without him” etc. . Is he perfect no, did his from did a little bit, yea, but at the end of the season the entire Liverpool team underperformed expect for a couple of players and it doesn’t take away from the fact that Salah has been very good for a while now and he still managed to produce another brilliant season at Liverpool and people often take his greatness for granted because he has been putting up the same numbers every year, I mean for 7 seasons straight how many wingers do you know that can have 30 G/A as a winger in a league people continue to say it’s the best league in the world and we have grown accustomed to it. Don’t change your view on him purely because of recency bias as he remains one of the best players in the world and there is a good argument that he’s the best winger in premier league history even though many people will look at his legacy in English football and bring up the fact that he won 1 PL title in 7 years. Liverpool could be better off selling him, as of right now he’s still their most productive and consistent attacker because no one on that team can come close to his stats. He’s not finished he just went through a rough period in form that’s all and that can happen to anybody.
