  • Hey loves!! This vlog went by fast. We got a lot done. They don’t teach you how to make labels in library school so I had to teach myself. 😂

    Hi! I am a librarian in Korea. I found your video while searching for a Librarian's Vlog. What a great video! I'll come often to see your videos 💕💕

    I love seeing school librarians of color! I got my MLS last December and worked as a middle school librarian for a virtual school this past school year. Unfortunately my position was “outsourced” when the virtual elementary and middle schools where merged. So I’m gong back in the secondary classroom for this school year😔 The only available positions were elementary school library positions and I’m terrified of being an elementary school librarian. I wish I had found your videos before I completely ruled it out.

      This is similar to what happened to me. My school(upper elementary) merged with the lower grade school but I kept my position. We will see how it goes in aug. I feel for you because that shows you just how much these districts care. If possible I would reccommend networking with the librarians in your district. I can promise that SOMEBODY has information on another library position. :) in my humble opinion, always choose library or a "higher" position because you don't want to be typecasted. It's not too late to reconsider! I would apply anyway.

      @@LilianShekinah Thank you so much for your reply. I signed a contract already to teach EC 🥺thankfully my pay will stay the same since I have a MAT in SPED. I wish you much success on how you navigate the merge. I can’t wait to see new content in August! Hopefully I’ll have better luck after this school year and find another media position. Thank you again!

    Hi, I am so thrilled to have found your videos. Does your library, by chance, have a maker space? I was a long-term librarian sub, and I've accepted a new position in the school library. So I'm looking forward to this new year.

      Hi there! I am sorry for the delay in response. UA-cam Flagged this comment, unsure why. Unfortunately, my school library does not have a makerspace area. However, I facilitate makerspace activities during whole group/station activities. Because it's just me in the library, I usually have the students do task card Legos, origami, form blocks. I think about clean up and student behavior. I hope that this make sense. I will explain when school starts back up.

    Hi Lilian, thanks so much for this video! Were you a teacher before becoming a school librarian? Also, how did your first few years compare to where you are now? Would love a video about some helpful tips. Thanks :)

    Love the vlogs! Could you make a video talking about your graduate school experience and why you chose to become a school librarian?

      Thank you so much! I believe that I covered my reasoning for choosing to be a school librarian in my "job/outlook" video. I will be making a dedicated video soon, but to answer your question right away: I REALLY wanted to seek professional growth and development outside of the traditional classroom :) Originally, I wanted to leave Education all together, but after researching the field and job outlook, I concluded that it was much easier for me to pivot as a school librarian to gain experience and a good paying opportunity, without having to start over from scratch.

      Graduate school was fairly manageable as it relates to the coursework. I was able to be a fulltime graduate student as well as maintain fulltime employment as a teacher. I finished my program in a year and a half. It would've been sooner (a year) had I been able to secure a position sooner but the corona did a number on everything. I took 2 summer sets, fall, and spring. I was pretty determined.

      @@LilianShekinah This is my experience as well. I resigned from my last teaching position but I want to remain in education. I’m in the process of applying to a MLIS program and I think that being a school librarian will be a much better fit for me.

    Hi! So I’m getting a bachelors degree in creative writing & literature. I was thinking about becoming an elementary school librarian. I know I would need a masters in library science, but would I also need any teaching certificates if I wanted to work in a school? Thank you so much!!

    • @LilianShekinah
      @LilianShekinah  Рік тому +3

      It varies by state, so I don't want to tell you anything wrong. In my state you need your general teaching certificate, two years teaching experience and and a masters in library science to be a certified librarian. some districts will hire if you have teaching credentials and you are enrolled in your masters programs/completed so many hours/finish in 2 years. it varies.

    I wanna become a school librarian, I’m 24 and finishing my bachelors. But I’m so stressed that when I finally get my masters there’s gonna be no job opportunities, ima be “no longer a young teacher” (I work as an afterschool teacher)
    I’m worried library science is gonna be a stressful masters.

      Does it matter what you get your bachelors in? I just graduated with a bachelor’s in communications but am thinking of going back to school to become a librarian. I assumed that you have to get a bachelor’s in library science and then get your masters on the same subject because a lot of the articles I was looking at were saying that.

      Okay. You will want to get the circulation desk together. This is where you check out books and have your stations/centers/activities together. I will be making a video about first week /beginning of the year things to do ASAP. Ask your admin how classes will come to the library: are you fixed schedule or flexible schedule? and go from there.

    Hey this may be too personal so feel free to jus delete the comment but: do you feel like it’s affordable to be a school librarian? One of the main things I keep hearing is that i wnt b able to live on my own on the salary, but idk what to believe :(

    • @LilianShekinah
      @LilianShekinah  Рік тому +4

      This will depend largely on the salary and cost of living and your individual expenses. What I like to do is look up jobs and look at the salary and determine if it works for me. In my state 50k-60k is standard for public and school librarianship. I have found that corporate and academic librarianship will be more lucrative but it is up to you. I hope this helps.
