can't believe I've been using ecosia for 5 years now, it has been so great to watch their evolution. I think this label will be so helpful, so i hope it gets the recognition it deserves ^^
I never thought deeply on tree projects conducted by corporations. I just thought…”Oh, goodie, trees are being planted! That’s good.” I didn’t think to question where they planted those trees? Why did they really plant those trees? What trees did they plant? Will those trees planted actually benefit the environment? Thanks for this educational video! Sometimes I need to remind myself that not everything is so black and white because actions made to “help the environment” can be a disguise for greenwashing, and not everyone (like me) realize that immediately.
Same thing happened in the uk in the late 70s / early 80s. There was a massive tree planting project. I’m just old enough to remember some stories in Newsround etc. All the trees were planted and then just left. Guess what! They all died apparently. When I heard about this and remembered the old news stories, I was like ‘oh yeah, what happened to the trees!’ Anyway, well done. Great idea. Let’s hope it has a big impact
I was born in the UK in 1973. Recently I came across a leaflet my parents must have saved called “Plant a Tree in ‘73”. I became a forester, and have planted and cared for tens of thousands of trees during my career, so some good must have come out of it!
I’ve been using Evosia since you released the search we gone, so happy to hear an update and stories of what’s effective. Love the focus on biodiversity🌟
I hope the biodiversity certificate works. It makes me feel so hopeless when tree planting projects are done wrong (all the trees died, wrong type, not monitored, etc). Like the logging companies that illegally chop down trees then do a greenwash tree planting where they aren't monitored at all or done well. It makes me so sad. I really hope this certificate stops at least some greenwashing.
Thank you Ecosia!!! I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. I am very happy that Ecosia has taken up this issue and solved it so excellently.
I'm not what anyone would call an activist, but I've been using Ecosia for many years now. I like the idea that it makes at least a small difference and NOT using the Google-monster is a big plus for me.
In the last few years I've planted acorns(from my towns oldest oak, that is several hundred years old), horse chestnuts, and a few others in forests around where I live. Every year I've also went back and checked on as many as possible(I don't remember every single one sadly), seeing if they've grown, if they still live, removing competing and much faster growing young trees in a certain distance around them. And so on. Many of them are doing well so far. It's also interesting to see the differences in growth where they really thrive vs where they haven't done as well.
This is awesome! A trustworthy certification for tree planting will make a huge difference in helping regular consumers know which projects to back. It's so cool that Ecosia was directly involved in developing something like this. 💚🌎🌳
I think this will be very important to separate greenwashing and genuine work! It will make it easier for consumers and companies to set demand on the actions they support
That's a reason I also support I. T. F ( International Tree Foundation) as they have been getting it right for over 100 years, supporting local communities, native species and empowering women and communities. Richard St Barbe Baker was concerned about this in 1922.....
Can we PLEASE go back to a time when one had one's internet search count using ECOSIA shown as the number of trees planted? I loved knowing how many trees my searches planted and would love to know again! Why the change?
In Western Australia the road guys don’t allow tree planting within 10m of a road reserve because of road safety. Our canopy cover is abysmal as it is.
Great news, thank you. You inspired me to do the research and get my iphone switched to Ecosia. Now all my devices are helping trees! I sent this video to friends, you deserve more views.

Love it. So maybe we someday get to read headlines like „China and the U.S. are planting 100 Billion biodiversity certified trees and are announcing the end of nationalism, so that we all join together and live in unity and peace 🕺💃🤗❤️✨🌱💫“ hehe 🤗❤️
Thank you for educating us about the proper ways to do this! Albuquerque, New Mexico, is infested by several types of trees that, in this climate, are basically tree-sized weeds, because they grow easily in our conditions though they aren't native species, so they've taken over and tend to squeeze out trees that actually do well in and for this area. Several former mayors &/or governors had campaigns to improve our biodiversity with these foreign species, and now we'll be working for decades to control the invasive species that are choking out our native flora. If we can get future civic leaders to turn to you for environmental advice, it would be beneficial for everyone involved! Thanks again for spreading accurate knowledge--it's always helpful!
very true. Usually tree planting that I see in forest land involves the planting of pine trees. NOTHING ELSE. This is mainly for the lumber industry. In towns and cities you see maples. Usually one kind only. What also should be addressed is the legal planting of invasive species from the Green houses and garden centers. The same goes for the pet trade.
Yeah, reforestation is different than monoculture tree pharming. Like replacing native diversity & interplanting berries for wildlife, considering forests can give us foods, medicines, latex, fibres & dyes. Oh, and mushrooms. Don't forget the local mycorrhizal fun guys!
What an excellent initiative!! There is so much ineffective tree planting going on, which is a huge waste of time and resources and only serves to fool the general public and make them disillusioned. I hope that the GBS really helps to resolve that issue. I'm glad to be with Ecosia.
As a child in the rural area I grew up in, when we went higher and higher up into the mountains and forest, the trees and under bush would change. From fruit trees next to the fields with occasional patches of grass to feed the animals, to the spots where we colected firewood and a moss we used as bedding for the animals, all the way to the native forest that colected water from fog and kept the streams year round. Abandonment of the fields, fires, has unbalanced the system. 😢
This is great! There also should be a space on the sticker the write a company reference number or QR code, so someone can't use the sticker to fake involvement, then you could have a website that links that number to a database of companies.
Congratulations Ecosia, it is really time for a more quality and integral view on such projects and so a science based certification for renaturation. Besides the best way to protect a existing healthy, biodiversity environment is not to change through human activity.

Ecosia needs to partner with some electric cargo bicycle maker and solar panels with battery storage to power them. This partnership would help partners on the ground be more sustainable.
In the UK HS2 demolished swathes of ancient woodland ecosystems that take centuries to establish, and thought they could just plant rows of new saplings to counter this effect. Many of these saplings died because they weren't monitored afterwards, or didn't fit where they were planted, but all the HS2 publicity spinners wanted to do was dazzle critics with numbers. Classic greenwashing.
