I started out pretty indifferent about the build series compared to your other videos, but now it is one of my most anticipated video series on UA-cam. What a cool thing! Thanks for brining us along Steve!
When this build series started, I was a little ways out from starting at an A&P school, I'm now about 5 months out from completing the course and being eligible to take my O&P test, to be able to watch these and slowly understand more and more of what you all are talking about was a really cool experience
That's got to be an amazing feeling when it starts to look like it can really fly and knowing that you and your team is the reason it came together. I can tell a lot of work and skill went into this plane and I think it's one of the most professional quality RV's I have seen. Can't wait to see it leave the ground.

Oh man. I wanted to see the first start up. Just thinking back what all you went through, and scheduling you had to do because of COVID, and having to wear a mask for most of the time. This is a special plane.

Yeah it’s been a challenge - we figure we lost ~5 months of build time due to the initial strict lock downs and confusion before we got some functional protocols in place to allow us to follow the rules that were established in our province. The Museum is still not allowed to be open to the public though :(
I helped a friend building rv6 when I was in high school. It was surprisingly easy and fun . One day I hope to own an a kit plane myself. Also this video is impressive and also riveting
I remember thinking when this series started, “man, this will take forever to happen.” Now we are close to the end of this incredible journey, and I wish we could roll back the time! Congrats on all the progress, and especially working through the pandemic the way you guys have!

It's only taken you a little over two years to get to this point with a global pandemic in the middle. It may seem like a long time but compared to most builds you're well ahead of the curve.
Cool yeah - we have a great team. But Glenn a couple hangars over starter about the same time, and had caught right up to us - and he’s done it alone! I will be featuring him some more soon.

@@FlightChops Ooooh I do love a bare metal finish. I do suspect that there are many hours of polishing and waxing to keep that metal in good order though! Good luck with the test flights.
I could not help but internally see that first scene as AVE tightening to a grunt, then saying "click". I know, you need more precision than that, but I still chuckled.
@@FlightChops AvE is another Canadian UA-camr. He does mostly shop work and tool tear downs/testing. He's a big vulgar, so don't watch him around your kids. The "click" part is cause when he's cranking on a bolt and figures it's tight enough he says "click"

This episode made me cry. Wing attach bolts accessible from outside - you didn't have to hang upside down in the cabin and contort to get the bolts in and then not have any room for your hand and the nuts, let alone room to swing a hammer. The wing attach process in the older models (like my RV-9A) is the single worst part of the whole build. This was when I decided that re-learning to swear is vital to survival. BIG improvement with the -14 - you have no idea how much better that is.

I'm overdue on my wing tank testing; hoping to get it done in the garage while paint is drying on the fuselage in the shop. Wash primer, primer and basecoat is on; working on my lettering and graphics; a local artist is doing my nose art tomorrow. Then clearcoat, and the fuselage will be ready for the hangar. In other news: had my first Decathlon flight this morning! Progress is being made... for both of us. Can't wait to see the engine start!

Steve, if you have any footage on how you are getting inside that wing to rivet, I'd really appreciate it. I understand that it's a two-person job, but when you're getting to the edge and you can't get your arm in there, how are you getting in there? I know you had some in this episode, but if you would just please do a how-to get inside that wing to rivet and a riveting 101, I'd really appreciate that, too. Thank you for making these vlogs. Pretty cool trick with the 3-in-1 oil - I always tried to name-that-smell for aircraft and now I got it. Also, it seems like every other video on YT mentions a broken Go Pro - I bet that company gets a lot of deserters soon who try a DJI or something else.

Hopefully somebody sees this but when you're torquing bolts, the expectation of the torque wrench manufacturer is that you're only applying Force perpendicular to and at the hand grip. Bracing or gripping at any other point will change when the torque value is reached for the wrench and may not allow you to sufficiently torque the bolt or nut. If the socket isn't directly above the nut you are working on, that offset can also change the actual torque value. Once it clicks you don't need to do any other secondary click checks because that could apply additional torque to the bolt. Also some bolts want a two stage torque requiring a 1.5-2 rotation loosen between the torque operations to pull the bolt into the piece firmly before putting the final torque on the nut side. I have a torque wrench like this one that does foot pounds or newton/meters with a 1/2" drive; a smaller one with 3/8" drive that does inch pounds; and a 1/4 drive screwdriver style for certain electronic assemblies calibrated down to inch/ounces which is used when working with aluminum and steel matings to prevent damage to critical assemblies. 16 in. oz. = 1 in. lb. 12 in. lb. = 1 ft. lb.
I'd advise against using RTV for marking bolts, that blob can stay attached on one side and look like its still attached to the other when it's not. In this case it seems to be more for remembering to torque each one 2 times not visual inspection to see if the nut has moved. Paint markers or cotton swap dipped in paint will show visually if the nut has come loose. Saw this exact thing on suspension bolts on off road race car, looked to be tight but RTV blob was dangling on one side.
Wonderful stuff, Steve! It must be amazing to build your own airplane. What you really needed was to get Mike Patey involved! I would love to see what a Patey redesigned RV would come out as! LOL Twenty five percent faster, and fifteen percent more fuel efficient! LOL
@@FlightChops, he'd BETTER get Scrappy there. With that 720 he's got hanging on the nose and that prop, he could fly it there without wings!. Fuel mileage might not be that great, though. Honestly, I'm pretty sure that he'll have Scrappy ready, I hope. Different subject. I don't know the rules in Canada and how they differ from the U.S., but before you fly your aircraft, do you need someone from Transport Canada to come out and look over the build and give you provisional approval to fly the airplane? Did you have Transport Canada coming out DURING the build to check up on it? There was a question about Scrappy and having it inspected the other day, and the FARs say it needs to be inspected before first flight, but I thought it used to be that you had to have regular checks during the build process. However, I don't even have a current medical, let alone having flown in 40 years, and I most certainly am not building my own airplane, so I don't know these things any more.
Yes good point that with in the series, I should spell out in more detail how the inspection process works. I will do that in the next one or the one after. But for how I will briefly confirm that you have it about right - we have several inspections through the process - the first is called “the pre closure inspection” to confirm rivets are good on control surfaces, etc. And then there is a final inspection before the test flight program is allowed. Then we get a final certificate of airworthiness after a trouble free 25 hours flown with in 25 miles of home base. (This is a little bit different than how it works in the U.S.)

14:07 careful, i believe torque wrenches are only accurate if you pull from the handle at the end.... I don't know for sure, but that two handed grip might throw the torque reading off. granted you had plenty of wiggle room with the torque, and it was definitely torqued enough when you switched to the proper grip. just gotta be careful you don't over torque that way
Per the instructions of my very expensive and expensive to get recertified every 12 months torque wrench the handle is the only area that should be used to apply torque and that said torque should be slow and smoothly applied no jerking or yanking.
Thank goodness someone addressed this. Terrible torquing procedures. I know Flightchops probably did not know, but some of those experienced builders should have instructed him on correct procedures.

This is also the reason the military uses super lightweight wrenches so the operator's body and arms are not fatigued by the torque wrench when pulling torque and it can be done as smoothly and accurately as possible. I was cringing the whole time watching this, but I did not want to offend someone. Thank you for commenting.
@@mikeryan6277 Yes and no. an extension could theoretically twist. but the torque load should still be applied the same. i think the only problem with extensions is it can allow you to be angled from the bolt (not perfectly 90*) I've never seen anyone use a cheater bar on a torque wrench. They are designed to work in their torque range. no one is going to sell a torque wrench that isn't already long enough to make its max torque.
Haha - sorry - one or two more episodes to catch up the first engine start - but it is worth the wait to see what we went through to get to that point :)

Careful grabbing that torque wrench like you did and pulling at weird angles like that. It's designed to be applied on the grip of the wrench and directly 90° or it can not click and let you keep tightening.
Thanks to government regulation we have seen the great stagnation in general aviation and we are still using the methods of the 1940s to build our airplanes. This excessive regulation is not making flying safer, all it is doing is making it more expensive and preventing as many people as possible from getting into the air.

Regarding dry vs lubricated torquing, you'll find the answer three paragraphs above the torque table you guys were looking at to on page 5-20.

There was a question about Scrappy and having it inspected the other day, and the FARs say it needs to be inspected before first flight, but I thought it used to be that you had to have regular checks during the build process. However, I don't even have a current medical, let alone having flown in 40 years, and I most certainly am not building my own airplane, so I don't know these things any more.
Yes good point that with in the series, I should spell out in more detail how the inspection process works. I will do that in the next one or the one after. But for how I will briefly confirm that you have it about right - we have several inspections through the process - the first is called “the pre closure inspection” to confirm rivets are good on control surfaces, etc. And then there is a final inspection before the test flight program is allowed. Then we get a final certificate of airworthiness after a trouble free 25 hours flown with in 25 miles of home base. (This is a little bit different than how it works in the U.S.)

14:07 careful, i believe torque wrenches are only accurate if you pull from the handle at the end.... I don't know for sure, but that two handed grip might throw the torque reading off. granted you had plenty of wiggle room with the torque, and it was definitely torqued enough when you switched to the proper grip. just gotta be careful you don't over torque that way
Per the instructions of my very expensive and expensive to get recertified every 12 months torque wrench the handle is the only area that should be used to apply torque and that said torque should be slow and smoothly applied no jerking or yanking.
Thank goodness someone addressed this. Terrible torquing procedures. I know Flightchops probably did not know, but some of those experienced builders should have instructed him on correct procedures.
@@chadpm11 Yes, Thak you for commenting on this as well. This is also the reason the military uses super lightweight wrenches so the operator's body and arms are not fatigued by the torque wrench when pulling torque and it can be done as smoothly and accurately as possible. I was cringing the whole time watching this, but I did not want to offend someone. Thank you for commenting.
Do extensions and cheater bars etc. change torque ?
@@mikeryan6277 Yes and no. an extension could theoretically twist. but the torque load should still be applied the same. i think the only problem with extensions is it can allow you to be angled from the bolt (not perfectly 90*) I've never seen anyone use a cheater bar on a torque wrench. They are designed to work in their torque range. no one is going to sell a torque wrench that isn't already long enough to make its max torque.

Careful grabbing that torque wrench like you did and pulling at weird angles like that. It's designed to be applied on the grip of the wrench and directly 90° or it can not click and let you keep tightening.

You’ll get there! They start you with the tail kit as it is a perfect intro to the process - I felt the same way.
How do you close out the final wing skin? It looks like there are areas where you can’t get a bucking bar in?

We use two colours to indicate that two of us checked.
Has anyone knowledge of torque measurements being affected by the use of an extension ? ..... enough to be negligible/within the range specified ?
Nothing worse than grommet holes that are too small when you want to run an additional wire for something new antenna; don’t ask me how I know. 😏

Thanks to government regulation we have seen the great stagnation in general aviation and we are still using the methods of the 1940s to build our airplanes. This excessive regulation is not making flying safer, all it is doing is making it more expensive and preventing as many people as possible from getting into the air.

Did you just use a grinder on Aluminum? If so, That is a Big No-No. Set a safe example.
He is using a Scotchbrite wheel, is intended for deburring and finishing aluminum edges.
Scotchbrite / soft wheel side of the grinding station is what I used to debur, yes.
