Nico got a lot of love in the last book though. And he was never a hated character like Jason and Piper; most sympathized with him (heck, unrequited love, who can't sympathize with that?) and felt sorry for him. Jason, however, as Rick pointed out, was disliked by many I think mainly because he was "too perfect" and the fans were worried about him stealing the spotlight from Percy. As for Piper, she only really became relevant in the last book, when her fighting and charmspeak were better and etc. Also, it didn't help that the first time she had a chance to narrate in MoA, after recovering Percy from Rome, the first thing she does is compare him to Jason (who, obv, she sees as the most perfect guy in the world) and calls him "unimpressive" simply because of the way he looks lols

Thanks Jess! I was nervous before the interview but once I met him & talked to him for a while I sort of forgot that he basically wrote my childhood and realized he was just a normal/awesome guy. I'm definitely glad that he wasn't my first author interview though!
Warning: slight spoilers in case some people haven't read yet. On the Percy-Annabeth vs Jason-Piper topic, I understand that the latter couple needed more love and that's why Rick focused on them in the last book, but I think he could have done that without making Percabeth (esp Percy) look so useless at the same time. I mean, Percy's main parts in the book were parts where he screwed up, so that was a bummer. It's like the entire HoO series (in Percabeth's case, even before HoO) was leading up to this book and the characters all grew and became more powerful and it showed... except for Percy and Annabeth. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book a lot and the end was exactly what Rick, through the characters, has been saying all along (that the series began with Jason, Piper, Leo and will most likely end with Jason, Piper, Leo). That's my only issue with the book. Even Percy's "big choice" that he might not be able to do without Frank's help that Mars mentioned in SoN and which has been mentioned many other times since was just put in casually, so kind of anticlimactic tbh. Mhm. Anyway, great interview and I'm definitely looking forward to this next series!

Ricks writing definitely changed between the 2 series and tbh I found the HOO hard to start as I was expecting a humorous quick read but they are zoo much more than that and go so much deeper and thats what makes them different and great. Hearing that Rick likes Lord of the Rings makes me so happy. Everyone at school kind of judges it and compares it to Harry Potter. I've tried getting my friends to read it. I'm happy I'm not the only one out there who likes it, because sometimes I feel that way.

My 9 yrs old daughter loves Percy Jackson. Is finishing off the first book. I am half way through the first book and love it, too! Very well written, funny, sad at times. All emotions are there really. Is so interesting, and makes you to read more to find out what next. In addition to the above, it's educational as well :-)
AHHHHHH I can't wait for the new series to come out! I'm re-reading the Percy Jackson books so I can finish the Heros of Olympus right now, so seeing this is amazing!
You are so lucky. Congrats. My problem with the HOO series wasn't just because I thought Percy and Annabeth were getting pushed to the side. I missed all the former characters. I missed Clarisse and Chris and the Stoll brothers and grover and Rachel. And Silena and Beckendorf (even if they did die, I feel like they would have been mentioned a bit more) My initial annoyance with the HOO series was that they were all pushed aside for this new cast of characters. And with the BOO, all you did was further undermine the remaining original characters. When Rachel was mentioned going to Reyna and when grover was running in Percy's dream and when Annabeth hopes the Stoll brothers don't take her message to be some kind of joke and Thalia being absolutely awesome in her appearance beside Reyna (Is this a new ship? Has to be right? Cos Reyna was told she wouldn't find love with a demigod. Technically Thalia's a hunter of artemis. Loophole please.) I was clinging to these moments because I already loved them from the first series. And then with Will, I was like, oh yeah, he was the one who healed Annabeth and so many others on that important day. And I felt like if anyone should get more face time, it should be them. Instead the majority of chapters are the new cast and switching POVs and just, ugh, everything seems to go right for them too. And it's not Piper's character I hate. Not wanting to stand out resonates wih me. I just don't like her power of charmspeak. Like we won't have control over ourselves. I also feel like Percy and Leo could have been better friends. They could have talked about plans to get calypso out. Or Leo could have given him a hint of the idea of using the Doctors medicine. And Frank talking to Annabeth that one time about his problem was just so sweet. And I wanted more there. I would have liked to see the original cast have more interaction with the newer cast. But it was more of the new Camp half-blood characters bonding with the new Camp Jupiter characters. And well, Nico. And the old cast being pushed aside like their powers were no longer as powerful as the new cast or the new cast being smarter and stronger and more balanced in every way possible whereas the old cast had unique traits and places where they were lacking. But the HOO was amazing too and I can't wait for more of your books. Rick Riordan is also a fantastic teacher. It's like he scatters lessons throughout the book.

AHHHHHH I can't wait for the new series to come out! I'm re-reading the Percy Jackson books so I can finish the Heros of Olympus right now, so seeing this is amazing!

My problem with the HOO series wasn't just because I thought Percy and Annabeth were getting pushed to the side. I missed all the former characters. I missed Clarisse and Chris and the Stoll brothers and grover and Rachel. And Silena and Beckendorf (even if they did die, I feel like they would have been mentioned a bit more) My initial annoyance with the HOO series was that they were all pushed aside for this new cast of characters. And with the BOO, all you did was further undermine the remaining original characters. When Rachel was mentioned going to Reyna and when grover was running in Percy's dream and when Annabeth hopes the Stoll brothers don't take her message to be some kind of joke and Thalia being absolutely awesome in her appearance beside Reyna (Is this a new ship? Has to be right? Cos Reyna was told she wouldn't find love with a demigod. Technically Thalia's a hunter of artemis. Loophole please.) I was clinging to these moments because I already loved them from the first series. And then with Will, I was like, oh yeah, he was the one who healed Annabeth and so many others on that important day. And I felt like if anyone should get more face time, it should be them. Instead the majority of chapters are the new cast and switching POVs and just, ugh, everything seems to go right for them too. And it's not Piper's character I hate. Not wanting to stand out resonates wih me. I just don't like her power of charmspeak. Like we won't have control over ourselves.
I also feel like Percy and Leo could have been better friends. They could have talked about plans to get calypso out. Or Leo could have given him a hint of the idea of using the Doctors medicine. And Frank talking to Annabeth that one time about his problem was just so sweet. And I wanted more there. I would have liked to see the original cast have more interaction with the newer cast. But it was more of the new Camp half-blood characters bonding with the new Camp Jupiter characters. And well, Nico. And the old cast being pushed aside like their powers were no longer as powerful as the new cast or the new cast being smarter and stronger and more balanced in every way possible whereas the old cast had unique traits and places where they were lacking.
But the HOO was amazing too and I can't wait for more of your books. Rick Riordan is also a fantastic teacher. It's like he scatters lessons throughout the book.

OMG Rick is such an awesome guy! I can not wait for his norse mythology series and any other book that he is writing. When he was talking about his definition of a cliff hanger my mind immediately went to Mark of Athena.

Like, she's awesome. How can you not like Piper? She hates all the pretentious traits associated with Aphrodite, she is all about what a person is on the inside and she's so strong. Do you think Annabeth would like her if she wasn't all those things????
