In Haiti we make these giants kites. We called them grandou. The flapper in the front is called vonvon. At the tail we used to attach razor blades and have kite fight to cut the other kite wire. On the rope we used to set a piece of floating paper that will travel along the rope all the way to the top.

Growing up in new York I had a friend that was a master at making these kids of kites. He could make amazing colorful designs. One day he made this monster 5 foot kite that we had to tie to a metal pole, After a few hours it bent the pole almost in half. We had to leave it up overnight until the wind died down a bit to get it back. Fun times!
Kids in Egypt make these kites and fly them from the rooftops! It was how long the tails were that tripped me out!
