    Brother, fantastic reading into it, yes , the episode gives a few nods to Sympathy for the Devil from Rolling Stones, pay close attention to Ralph when talking to the Doctor "Please allow me to introduce myself" , then Father Intintola saying to Ralph: "Were you there? When Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain" , also Tony to Paulie: "A little sympathy, huh?"

    “I shouldn’t laugh I’m sorry”. Believe me, the show wants you to laugh. As dark and dramatic as this show is, comedy and satire are at its nucleus. Almost every scene contains some purposely comedic moments.

    Elie, because of your keen interest in this show and all the little nuances of the storytelling and the way it was shot etc., I recommend so highly that once you are finished watching the entire series you listen to (or watch on UA-cam) the “Talking Sopranos” podcast with Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisanti) and Steve Schirripa (Bobby Bacala). They breakdown all 86 episodes in fine detail and it is such a great behind the scenes look at how this masterpiece of a show came to be. I can’t recommend it enough.

    I believe this was the episode Joey Pants submitted to the Academy, winning him an Emmy for best supporting actor.

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 6 місяців тому

      He submitted this with “Christopher”. Michael Imperioli kinda messed up by submitting this with “The Strong, Silent Type.” He should have submitted the premiere with “The Strong, Silent Type”.

    • @christofferjenzen78
      @christofferjenzen78 9 годин тому

      Yes,its so well earned and so bizarre, these Emmy rules since its not really the BEST ACTOR OF THE SEASON...although in both 3 and 4 Yes,Joey Pants killed it. But he wins and its a case study of deserved accolades. Being hilarious with the prank call,reduced to a selfloathing,blubbering mess after the tragedy,the priest scene5shows how conflicted and broken he is,only to get to go out with Ralphs confidence and logic at its peak, he's had enough kad isbfearless without the coke,in the end,he was a gladiator who stood up to a tyrant and paid the ultimate price.
      Anyway the real sin is he only got ONE SINGLE nod for that iconic role. Yes,he won great but what the hell,? Guess neither Sag or globes nominated supporting drama roles then....i Kinda hope. But not even one from like Online film & television association? It remains one of the finest gangster portrayals on any screen and just the fact that he's loathsome,a witty psycho who keeps shooting himself in the foot just by being his filterless self...but he wasn't reslly worse,they were all monsters but Joey Pants gave Ralphie a devil may care attitude,a sharpness and charm that made his indifference unsettling yet,with all the suckups and. Haters,he just lived his immoral life with a shit eating grin and we Kinda loved how he just shit in everyone s cereal.
      With Matrix and Memento,great roles in great films,that this is JPs finest hour says alot (Okay,it might be Bound but close enough).
      How his career just died after winning the Emmy and being Urich in Daredevil still pissed me off,it made no sense.

    Pretty sad that Tony draws the line at a horse and not Traycee. It makes sense though given that he cries only for animals. Love how the writing shows the hypocrisy of these characters.

    • @franklynjackson7359
      @franklynjackson7359 6 місяців тому +1

      @@earforenglish5867 both, but mainly to a horse. He cried over a horse, but not over Tracy, even though the horse was sacrificed for a good reason, while the girl got murdered for nothing. He didn't kill Ralph back then, but now he crossed a line. Tracy is just an excuse for him.

    • @gregsgoogle2947
      @gregsgoogle2947 6 місяців тому +1

      Disagree. If Ralph had only killed the horse & not Tracee... I can’t see Tony killing Ralphie with his own hands. Tony linked Tracee with Meadow in his head. And the fact Tony killed Ralphie the exact same way as Ralphie killed Tracee... bashing their heads in... is the symbolic link the writers are drawing.
      Tony could have strangled Ralph very ez at that point but went the extra mile & bashed his head in. Also look at Tony in the last scene walking into the parking lot (fade to white). Tony looks exactly the same on the day Tracee told him she was pregnant with Ralph’s baby.

    • @franklynjackson7359
      @franklynjackson7359 5 місяців тому

      @rath7948 Maybe, but still. He was offered to whack Ralph back in season 3 during their conflict. Even in this episode (21:00) he defends him despite being reminded of his deeds in the past. His response: "just take a look at how he earns", "this is business".

  • @darth856
    @darth856 6 місяців тому +2

    Great episode. I dare say most viewers have wanted Ralph dead since University. But in typical fashion, the show manages to make his actual death unsatisfying (for me at least) and Tony comes across in a negative way for what he did, losing his temper and killing his highest earning captain on a mere suspicion (Ralph kept denying that he did it). Tony knows even his fellow mobsters would not support what he did, hence him only involving Chris in the clean up.

    • @bilkywaygalaxy
      @bilkywaygalaxy 6 місяців тому

      Perfect analysis. Whenever you beg for a character’s death in this show, the actual death is always either intentionally anti-climatic or purposely awful and for reasons entirely unrelated to the original disdain for the character in question. Such great writing

    Lyrics were used as Ralph Cifaretto lines
    Because he is the Devil.
    Rolling Stones Sympathy For The Devil
    Please allow me to introduce myself
    I'm a man of wealth and taste
    I've been around for a long, long years
    Stole million man's soul an faith
    And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
    Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
    Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what's puzzling you
    Is the nature of my game
    Stuck around St. Petersburg
    When I saw it was a time for a change
    Killed Tsar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general's rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what's puzzling you
    Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made
    I shouted out
    Who killed the Kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me
    Let me please introduce myself
    I'm a man of wealth and taste
    And I laid traps for troubadours
    Who get killed before they reached Bombay
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's puzzling you
    Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's confusing you
    Is just the nature of my game
    Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
    As heads is tails
    Just call me Lucifer
    'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
    So if you meet me
    Have some courtesy
    Have some sympathy, and some taste
    Use all your well-learned politnesse
    Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
    But what's puzzling you
    Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down
    Woo, who
    Oh yeah, get on down
    Oh yeah
    Aah yeah
    Tell me baby, what's my name?
    Tell me honey, can ya guess my name?
    Tell me baby, what's my name?
    I tell you one time, you're to blame
    What's my name
    Tell me, baby, what's my name?
    Tell me, sweetie, what's my name?

    Elie, sthg to chew on re 4x1. The Prez on the bill is Andrew Jackson (7th Prez). I suspect that they chose that bill in particular because Andy was a killer compared to the other gents on US bills. He was the most gangster adjacent. As a teen, he refused to wipe mud off the boots of a British soldier who slashed his face with a sabre. Think of the bollz it took for a teen to tell a redcoat where to get off. Jax is also controversial for spearheading the Trail Of Tears which severely diminished and killed off the Native Americans. A lot of them want him off the 20 because of it. He showed up to TWO duels and didn’t fire into the air in either. He was also the first Prez to draw an attempted assassin. In 1835 on the Capitol grounds, a nut tried to shoot him with two flintlock pistols, both misfiring. Andy then beat the guy with his cane. Andy had seen a lot of shit in his day. He’s the one who might’ve understood Chrissy’s actions more than any other. It also could be coincidence, but I dunno. The show makes numerous President references, JFK and Teddy Roosevelt. Junior was correct that Teddy gave a speech with a bullet in his chest. Teddy was a maniac. Another attempted assassin shot him in 1912 whilehe was sitting in an open steam car/carriage and he waa too tough to seek treatment. The bullet hit the corner of a steel glass case in his coat. Otherwise he probably woulda died.

    One of my top 10 episodes of the series. As horrible as Ralphie is, more than anything, this episode is about Tony and his perception of Ralphie. It’s about Tony’s own hypocrisies and resentments. That’s what gives this episode greater meaning as far as the overall series. But it’s also just generally a really well-made installment that constantly evolves into different things from scene to scene.

      @@eliemoses I think he only meant Tracee. The link to Tracee specifically is how Tony killed Ralphie... the same way Ralphie killed Tracee... bashing their head in. When dying Ralphie felt what Tracee did.
      Also in the final scene... fade to white as Tony walked outside like he’s all hungover... Tony looks exactly like he did standing outside the Bing when Tracee told him she’s pregnant with Ralph’s baby.

    Quoted from SopranoAutopsy...
    "Historically, since at least the Middle Ages, the goat has been associated with Satan. If that is what Chase is signifying with this shot, then it becomes one more association between the Devil and Ralph-and points to his guilt in killing Pie."
    "Tony convinces himself that Ralph committed arson. And this leads to the second way that we can read the ambiguous shot of the goat which closed the scene at the stables; the goat may represent not Ralph the Devil, but Ralph the Scapegoat. The third book of the Hebrew Bible, Leviticus, recounts the story of the goat that was heaped with the sins of the people and then sent into the wilderness, never to be seen again".

    Head, feet and hands usually get buried away from the torso and limbs due to it being the way to identify a body. Before complete decomposition at least cops could lift dna like finger prints from hands and can use dental records if they come across a skull. But without the skull/hands they can't do much with just the skeletal remains of a torso

    I always thought Tony should have called Paulie and not Chris. Or at least both. A guy that old has to know how to get rid of “things” and he could have said it was an argument over the call to Paulie’s mom and Paulie would be loyal to him for the rest of his life.

      You know, that would have made the most sense considering how Paulie was already gunning for him over what Ralphie did to his mom. If Tony said that Ralphie confirmed it was him that pulled the prank and that he lost his temper over it, Paulie would have been forever indebted to Tony. So cool how even after all these years, people still give me new things to consider about this show!

    Interestingly, while the filming the episode Joe Pantoliano (Ralphie's actor) wasn't told if he did or did not cause the fire that killed Pie-O-My. He acted the scene was as if he didn't and David Chase shot and edited the scene as if he did. Did Ralphie actually do it? It doesn't matter, he was dead anyway the moment he called Tony a hypocrite

    Not horse, not animal, is he referring to Tracey as he’s killing Ralph?
