How to Shoot From Inside a Car | Through Windshield | Tactical Rifleman

- You see on the news, every so often, where a police officer, conducts a normal traffic stop: only to wind up with the suspect getting out of the car and shooting at the officer. While not common, this is the reality that every officer faces every time they do a traffic stop.
If the officer is seated in his cruiser, he then has to shoot through the front or side windows, depending on the location of the subject. Depending on the angle of the shot, the officer may have to offset his point of aim to the the desired point of impact. They teach that in most police academies. However, it is not covered in much detail.
So, to assist our brave officers in blue (and anyone else that can benefit), we have put together this quick video on shooting through auto glass. Knowledge is power.
Thanks for watching, and please feel free to leave your comments below. I read them all.

I think it's safe to say that most people, including myself, would initially and intuitively think that the glass would make the bullet deflect down lower. However, after thinking about it, it makes sense. The glass at the top of the bullet is hit and broken first. This leaves the glass at the bottom of the bullet still intact to better deflect the bullet upwards through the glass that is already more broken
Aim where you want to hit and use more than one bullet. Roger that
Sgt. Maj. I know of a few first responders that have Silicosis from breathing the glass dust at the WTC ground zero if I may suggest to the viewers when training shooting through glass to wear a dust mask/respirator.
DragonU.S.M.C/0311 yea if ur shit sparkles you know 🤙
Actually I agree its best for practice to put on a dust mask. They only cost a buck or two.
But get a decent mask, one that seals well and have a shave!!
Outstanding. Great point. BZ
@Nicholas Rodriguez might as well keep looking into lasers and snorting coke bud
I better pay attention because they don’t teach this in Call of Duty.
the8jrfan 🤣😂🤣😂
black ops one tho
come to pubg we teach you
LOL Brother!! Thanks for the laugh man!!
They DO teach that oil filters make epic suppressors, though! 🥴
A lot of carjackings have been happening in my area over the last year, thank you for this very informative video!
Due to so much being covered had to watch again for something you mentioned in one of your classes for all the other gents that have yet to take one. Once the hole is established with a sidearm and the target moves shift your body as best you can to keep your rounds going through that same hole, your attacker will move.
Yep, keep the hole between you and the attacker.
It’s really hard to do that when rounds are coming in the window too. The bad guy put 14 rounds through my window and I put 3 back through. My group on the glass was about 3”. I had already hit him at least 4 times out of the side door. I am still waiting for the autopsy report on the guy who lit me up. I had lots of rounds miss me by inches. My friend in the passenger side got hit in the mouth with a .40 cal fmj and it stopped in his neck. They put a steel jaw in for him and he is doing well.
@@boxelder9167 Holy shit, what happened? Are you a cop?
Karl it's probably a good idea to throw a bandana or dust mask when practicing this stuff...You dont wanna be inhaling glass shards, atomized lead all the time..Take care Sarg, great video
Thanks for sharing
@@TacticalRifleman 🤙
He's probably been inhaling worse for most his life lol.
@@jakehansen3418 So have I....That's why it's even more important to take precautions, especially as you get older. I'm sure his wife and kids want him around as much as possible
You guys are snowflakes! 🙄
Karl doesn’t have to shoot through glass, the glass bends to his will and clears a path for him. 🎖🎖🎖🔫
Nice!!!
thank you man. some people did not believe me that. a windshield would make a bullet shoot high
Quickly becoming my favorite channel, we appreciate all of your wisdom and your generosity in sharing such wisdom. 2nd amendment for ever. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for watching, TR
The closer the SHTF gets, the more valuable great information like this video means. Wish I had found this channel earlier but I’ll visit his archive and make up for lost time. Learned a lot.
No joke
One thing you missed is to place your muzzle against the windshield to reduce that glass blowback. Once you've opened a hole in the windshield, you keep your muzzle placed in it for followup shots. Side windows are made differently and you can just shoot through them wherever.
Not realistic when in a real life shootout. Esp if the target is moving across the windshield for target sight.
Dude.... You jacked Zee's car up big time....
Yep
I was never taught to shoot through glass. I forwarded this video to my deputy friends who are still active. Actually I should send it to my retired LEO friend. Thanks Karl. 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching, TR
I’ve done some training for shooting through a car windshield, and the way I’ve done it was to quickly put a few rounds through it in their general direction to make a hole to shoot through, then engage the target. However I’ve grown to know that cars in a gun fight are bullet magnets that afford very little in the way of protection, so I’ve emphasized to exit the vehicle if/as soon as possible. As well as, in the civilian world especially (whether that be police or as a civilian) you are responsible for every round you fire, and any deflection in those first few rounds could cause them to inflict unwanted injury to bystanders. Impo, there are better ways to, or rather more preferable ways, to engage a threat from inside a vehicle, like using the slot between the A pillar and the door when the door is open. It may take more time, but it may not, as you cannot account for the bullets deflection and as you know, you cannot miss fast enough to win a gunfight. Not saying there is no place for this, it definitely has a place and should be apart of any defensive or tactical training. Stay classy gents,

Remember, civilians need to pay attention too. In vehicle encounters happen.
Sights and Sounds right. And it’s advised to shoot while driving. If you’re driving just worry about getting away. If you’re vehicle isn’t moving shoot.
@@RoGuExPaNcAkE Or the passenger does the shooting. Hence "Riding shotgun"
I would’ve thought the first shot would be low because of the windshield. Glad I watched thanks
This has to be one of those moments where you smile and say to yourself "I get to do this for a living". Great video
Another outstanding video! You are so right when you say 'stay on the trigger'. Too many guys start making multiple holes in the glass and then it effects everything from sight picture to rounds on target and possibly friendlies. Protect yourself but always be situationally aware.
Thanks Karl! I'll definitely be watching your station. Cheers from Houston TX.
Great video as usual brother. I took some training in CA hosted by LA SWAT. They told us the windshield glass will turn to fine powder and get everywhere, so they told us to hold our breath while firing (not so easy when you're in the fight or flight mode) and keep holding it until you can cover your nose/mouth with something, exit the vehicle or get moving and get some wind blowing through the windows. You don't want to get that fine glass powder in your lungs.
Yep, hold your breath while shooting. The heavy glass dust settles fast, if there is no wind and the vehicle is not moving
That was a very informative demonstration. Angle of the glass, just another dimension to think about.
I've been thru some of this training before, Karl. Wish I'd been through this one. Best I've seen and I've pursued this an education of his imperfect process for some time. I know of a situation where a well-trained officer. who was trying to save a downed-officer, dumped almost an entire mag at an armed-subject, through front-windshield glass. He was making every effort to end the violent incident. Sadly, none of the rifle-rounds fired reached their mark, per the autopsy on the dead-guy. This type training is often over-looked, yet much needed.
Just YESTERDAY SAW LIVE NEWS PHILLY GUN BATTLE OVER 75 ROUNDS FROM 4 COPS BEHIND CAR B 4 FINALLY GOT 2 HITS & GUY FELL!! (HE HAD VEST ON ALSO!! AR 15. IN DARK PARK!!
This is a great video. My wife and I have discussed a threat while driving and I have trained the draw in a vehicle, but never thought to train this. Another great video guys thank you again. You are awesome.
This was an amazing video. This reinforces my opinion of DO NOT shoot thru the windshield unless under the most extreme circumstances. These videos I see of officers shooting thru the windshield at fleeing vehicles, suspects that are like 40 yards away, etc are no bueno. Especially when they're not drilling those shots thru the same hole following the first shot. It is not worth it unless the suspect is actively shooting into your vehicle.
Agreed. Thanks for watching, TR
I was thinking throughout the video "what about rifle calibers?" Thinking id have to look it up, then he says "what about rifles?" Amazing video as usual. One of the best channels on youtube.
Thank you for taking the time to do this for us . I owe you , man
Thanks for watching, TR
I carried a 357 Sig as a patrol officer and I still use 357 Sig working security which is an excellent duty caliber. But I see a lot of dudes who think they won't need to train on shooting through windshields if they just carry a 357 Sig which isn't the case. Conversely, I see some sources nowadays saying 9mm is just as good as 357 Sig for this, but I feel that is because 9mm guys actually train more (which is the strongest part of 9mm). Really appreciate videos like this and I'll stick to getting nerve damage with my 125gr Gold Dots.
Solid plan. Stay safe out there. Strength and Honor, TR
Outstanding video karl, will show this to my supervisor tonight.
Thanks for watching, TR
good to learn ...
Very tru.👍🏼 I’m a Sheriffs Dept and I was engaged in this exact shooting scenario. I was taught to aim low. 6 shots, 2 shots his high left chest, 4 center mass.
Thanks for sharing and thank you for your service. Strength & Honor, TR
can't believe your not wearing a mask to keep from breathing it in. lol
Glad to see someone else carry a glock with a conversion barrel, I got a gen3 G22 with a fluted Wheaton Arms match barrel......honestly a good thing to have if you're a prepper cause with a simple barrel swap you're back to shooting .40 cal, should you run low on either ammo you have that option to swap out but the accuracy with these thicker .40 to 9mm conversion barrels is phenomenal I fell in love after the first clip. Also I swapped out to G17 mags to eliminate any double feed issues cause your .40 cal mags will retain 9mm but with fully loaded mags the spring tension in the mag may cause a double feed which I didn't want to take that chance in the heat of the moment.
Edit: I see you have 2 amish viewers who found shooting threw automobile glass uninformative. 🤣
Karl got glass all over him just for us. Press "F" to pay respects.

Great video. You are a true professional and I appreciate all that you share and teach us. Thank You!
Thanks for watching, TR
Excellent! Thank you again!!!!
I've always wanted to practice shooting from inside my 4Runner out on the farm. I just don't want to mess up my tint, and obviously not shoot through my own glass 🤣 Great video as always Karl
Even if you aim low to adjust that first shot you'll hit "virgin" glass on the second shot to "adjust" again. So your first shot shouldn't be considered a hit. It should be considered as a breach. Then use the hole from the first shot as an access point. Basically like the AR demonstration. On a side note, this would be an awesome video in slow mo. Great video as always!
Thanks for watching, TR
Excellent video
Thanks for a very informative video!
Really appreciate this video. Real world scenario for a citizen hemmed in, in a Walmart parking lot inside one's vehicle while a bad guy is spraying AK rounds. Great information. We'll be teaching this at our next FTX across the state of Kentucky.
Thanks again Karl.

Cap't out.
I feel like the only sort of safe thing to do in that situation is to put massive amounts of fire down in an effort to suppress while someone else drives, and hope the bad guy doesn't get lucky.
@@tackytrooper this would work, if you weren't alone, and hemmed in by panicked or wounded driver's behind and/or beside you.
@@tonydowd8566 Well if the driver can't drive everyone who doesn't want to be dead better get out of the vehicle where they can take cover and fight.
If you're alone and under fire in a parking lot, you shouldn't even be in the car.
@@tackytrooper I agree.
A point to add is that you have to compensate for every different make of vehicle, as windshields come in so many different angles, from a Jeep to a low slung Honda Accord and lower than that even, many variable in this situation with no real ability to train in it unless you know someone with a field full of dead cars and trucks that doesn’t mind you blowing holes in all the possibilities of angle. That being said, it’s like shooting in water from assorted angles, you’ve gotta compensate and hope the best, because all the vast variety of angles out there in windshields will produce different paths of bullet travel. Something to think about.
It's Friday on tactical rifleman and I've learnt more important information, thanks Karl and the TR team 👍
Thanks for watching, TR
If you shoot low on your first shot, that’s what you’re stuck with. The bullet only travels normally as you dig out a hole in the glass. If you ultimately want to hit center mass, aim there and realize you might throw your first round.
First time I’ve ever heard of this, great video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks, great presentation!👍🇺🇸
Glad you liked it!
Carl, thanks for the heads up 🤙
You bet!
Thanks Karl, for the demonstration. Hope Chad didn't mind your using his car. Great info, good stuff to know. Strength & Honor

Nice work! Thanks for sharing
Very interesting👊
Very good information !!
Thank you !!!!
You are welcome
Does this work in reverse? Say you're outside the car aiming at a guy inside the car. Should you aim at the head to hit the chest?
Not needed, as he is only 3 ft from glass. Aim center mass.
@@TacticalRifleman Right. I thought about that, but already posted. Thanks for the reply.
very educational 👍🏻
You could be a movie actor, great channel
I've read stories about how the British SAS would get ambushed in Ireland. When that happened, they would raise their rifles and fire through the glass. The movie HEAT did a scinero like that.
During 3 gun competitions there are scenarios where you shoot from front seat of cars with pistol or rifle. It is good practice for body alignment and sight picture controls. However there isnt any glass in car. Thanks for video.
Thanks for watching, TR
Oh how I love the unique feel of glass dust in my lungs
Good stuff
I got a 9mm I love it. Thanks for the video
Great teaching video. Short, sweet, and on topic.
Thanks for watching
Well, that's some random knowledge I hope I NEVER have to apply.
For training always wear a mask to protect your airway from the glass dust!
Yep. However, for purpose of the video, I just held my breath. The heavy glass particles fall quickly in no wind. However, you are right, I should have covered that in the video.
Thanks for watching, TR
sir i learn a lot from that vudeo thanks very much TR stsy strong
Hello, it looks like shooting a projectile through and Convex Glass the bullet degrades by the time it hits the target.
It seems to me the first reaction is to reach for your weapon, and "Get Out" of the car while you call for back up.
Shooting from inside the car is not likely often, there are many other variable at play in this scenario.
You made the "americangunchic" tired I have seen many times when the weapon or gear can impact your abilities.
She can handled it no doubt weight becomes a factor. I think a gear to weight ration is worth looking into.
Good Video bringing sight into the subject.
Thank you.
LOVE YOUR video...i learn even i dont practice it.. but i know what will i do if somethings happen like that....
I learn the most from your videos and I watch a lot of different gun videos . Thanks keep up the great work I'll keep watching.
Thanks for watching, TR
The problem that arises is that under combat stress, many do not punch such nice clean loopholes through the glass and end up throwing many rounds at odd angle and with reduced terminal effect out the front end. Seems like a lot of these released footage video show police spraying the whole front windshield with hits before the whole incident is over. This, like every other little thing in life and shooting, has its own mastery I suppose.
I remember reading up on the story about a police officer who got into a nasty shootout with a bank robber, hit the bank robber several times with his 45 ACP Glock, complained about it not stopping the assailant. However, the initial hits were through his front windshield, meaning the bullets were tumbling in on target with poorer terminal effect. The bullet loses a lot of "heat" and comes tumbling, and even if they try to engineer the best hollow points they can to expand after hitting barriers, reality and physics have the last say in such matters. The police officers main takeaway was that he needed a 9mm Glock to increase his round count (even though he never exhausted his primary handgun OR his secondary handgun's ammunition) but I saw it as another example of the problems of trying to shoot through glass.
First shots make the loophole and the rest of your shots can hit hard. Hose down your windshield from the inside and throw much less effective rounds down range. Easier said than done, but true.
Thank you Karl, this was great.
Thanks for watching, TR
Nice techniques love it
Our State highway patrolmen do shoot FMJ in 357 Sig so that it can penetrate vehicle metal and glass better.
Best thing to do is fight to get out of the car and stable to the side of whatever vehicle your in so your able to move, and seek better points
Fantastic video very informative thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good stuff, thank you!
Good information. Problem is...my agent is ticked and Allstate dropped my car insurance!
Thanks.... exactly what I was looking for
Ive shot out the rolled down window before. No ear pro very harsh, dont really want to do that again.
This i great knowledge to have and great technique. It would definitely suck to have to actually do that in a car real world no ear or maybe even no eye pro. Definitely might make a habit of wearing eye wear in car maybe.
From this day forth I will wear safety glasses, ear protection and gloves any time I'm driving a car lol
If I were a cop I would consider wearing safety glasses while on duty, if nothing else it will keep spit out of your eyes.
This is the most informative shooting video I've ever seen. Great job!

always informative, great details... oh and i still want your VW.
Sorry, not for sale
I might be first haha, anyway very interesting video, very informative, I really like the videos that involve fighting in and around vehicles since that is so applicable to so many people
Me too
I took 14 rounds through my front windshield after the carjacker attempted to enter my van through the side doors where he took 4 rounds. I put at least 3 through my windshield with about a 3” group. The glass flying into the cab was fairly significant especially as the windshield began to deteriorate. My passenger got hit in the mouth, it shattered his dentures, deflected and traveled inside the marrow hole of his jawbone and stopped a millimeter from his carotid artery. I was grazed on the top of my shooting hand and had multiple bullets miss me by inches. My skin was peppered with red spots from the glass fragments. I don’t know if I hit him through the windshield because I have not seen the autopsy report on him yet. He was moving in a zigzag pattern based on his blood trail he left on the ground. He had a .40 cal with fmj’s and a 30 round magazine. I had a .380 with critical defense rounds and 7 rounds total. The detective mentioned that I hit him at least 4 times in the center of the chest. The whole thing was captured on the traffic camera and my lawyer is going to get me the footage.
Lessons: I was stopped at a red light so pay attention when you are stopped. It happened really fast. I was able to draw as he ran up to the car. I gave him a second to change his mind and he started shooting. Then I had to be fully committed to ending the fight. I focused on making rounds connect with the center of his chest while he was trying to make head shots and kept missing. It’s hard to aim while you are being shot. My son was a sitting duck in the back seat and got hit 3 times. (He is still in pain but walking now). There wasn’t time to exit the van so unless you are by yourself you just got your passengers killed. Even after someone is hit they may not go down right away and they can kill you while they are bleeding out. Also, I didn’t expect what happened with people’s reactions after you tell them the story. They try to make the story in their mind the one you are telling them, they make excuses for the bad guy, they give you long winded speeches on what they would have done, the question you about why you carry a gun in the first place, they will question your use of deadly force and in most instances they are not helpful. It’s bad enough to be going over the shooting in your own mind a thousand times, you really don’t need help second guessing decisions you made in a split second under fire. The real world is not like any training scenario. I had to shoot seat belted and twisted around behind me in the dark, then through the side window without hitting my passenger and then through the windshield.
Dude Carl, that was bad ass and your startin to look more comfortable behind that there camera sir. Well done. Good job camera crew 👍🏼 for making Carl look like some kinda pro! 😉😂....🤭just kidding Carl don’t kill me please. Lookin good though guys. Lovin TR 👍🏼✌🏼
