- Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. The Pay As U Go Crew had recently formed in Sept/Oct 1999, then only consisting of DJ Slimzee, MC Major Ace (RIP) and MC Plague. In 2000, with the release of "Know We" it saw the crew expand, recruiting the likes of GodsGift MC, MC Maxwell D and MC Wiley. At this point Wiley was dabbling in many areas. He was a Garage DJ in a collective called, "Ladies Hit Squad" with DJ Target and MC Maxwell D, on Rinse FM 100.3. Wiley actually started off as a Jungle DJ back in the early 90s going under the name of DJ Wildchild. he changed his name to Wiley because there was already a well known and established female DJ called Wildchild on Kool FM. In 1999, Wiley was also DJing and MCing to Drum & Bass with DJ Geeneus and the Reckless Crew (DJ Interlude, MC D Double E (Dee), MC Lethal (Triple Threat) and MC Chigga D (Bruza) on Rinse FM. Among other things that year he was also producing Garage under the alias "Phaze One" releasing his hit single "Nicole's Groove" which was signed to Relentless Records after several months of successful sales on white label. All this being said not many people knew of Wiley's lyrical ability over Garage, but those days were coming. As Junglists we knew what he was capable of but he was to go on to take the scene by surprise. Making his mark as part as an innovator of a truly special era.
Rinse FM's stars regularly did guest shows on Deja Vu FM and vice versa it is believed that they both shared the same block/site where they put their transmitters with Deja Vu FM. Under the new management of Randy C, Dlux and Diesel closer ties were forged with Geeneus and Rips. Note that Dlux and Diesel both had played sets on Rinse FM 91.8 when it was Jungle pirate radio station and that is where the cordial ties began. Rinse FM's DJs and MCs were also booked for a lot rave events associated with Deja Vu FM, like "Last Man Standing" @Legends Nightclub, in Barking, and Rumble @The Stratford Rex.
They went on to release "Champagne Dance", in 2002, which reached no.13 in the UK national commercial charts and from that point onwards the crew were known as The Pay As You Go Cartel. In the years that followed during their height they also recruited MC Flowdan, MC Riko Dan and MC Dogzilla. Note that MC Dizzee Rascal was never officially part of the Pay As You Go Cartel. During their prime they featured on all the big raves from Sun City, Pure Silk, Club Sidewinder, Exposure, La Cosa Nostra, Garage Nation and other events.
The proliferation of UK Garage record labels helped with the following labels pioneering the new 2 Step phenomenon: DFL Label (DJ’s For Life), Sidewinder Records, Saché Recordings, Public Demand Label, Absolute Corruption Label, Locked On Records, Sidestepper Records, Dat Pressure Records (DPR Label), Groove Chronicles Label, Go! Beat Label, Manchu Recordings, Funki Dreds Label, First Class Records, Suspect Recordings, Sneak Preview Records, Sneaked Recordings, Jam Jam Records, Magnificent Productions, Face Off Records, Boot Recordings, Big Man Tunes Label, Britstonean Beatz Label, Love Peace And Unity Recordings, Hotpoint Label, Social Circles Label, Union Jack Records, Babyshack Recordings, Fifty First Recordings, Casa Trax Label, V.I.P. (Very Important Plastic), Bug Records, Relentless Records, Dubz For Klubz, Nice 'N' Ripe Label, Strickly Dubz Label, JBR (Jonny Biscuit Records), Outlaw Records (UK), 500 ReKorDs, Time 2 Flex label, City Dub Traxx label, E1 Recordings, Sound Of Underground London Records, Quench Recordings, Thirst Records, Suspect Recordings, DND Productions, Clean Cut Records, Allstars* label, Stamp Records, Funki Dreds label, Vinyl Frontier 2000, and many other labels that helped support the UK Garage sound.
