It is a lot about the wheelbase, and how much sticks out on the ends and underneath. I have driven a lot of Dodge vehicles ( some made by Mitsubishi ) that went places you wouldn't take an SUV or Jeep, simply because they were small enough, and had a low enough center of gravity. But the most capable vehicle I have ever had, was an early 80"s Subaru Wagon, it was everything the Dodges were, and four wheel drive, but wound out completely was 85MPH, downhill.
Agreed, but you won’t get a stock Ramcharger or any stock rig through a level 5+ trail in Las cruces without serious body damage anymore since trail maintenance stopped in that area 10 years ago. And that what makes LC my favorite place.
A long time ago, I had a 1981 Ram Charger. It had a 360 V8, and an auto trans. All factory stock. No lift, I don't remember the ratio, but it had pretty high (highway gears), open diffs, 30 inch tires and it was part time four wheel drive with manual hubs. Considering how weakly set up / equipped it was, it actually did pretty good off road. I was living in California at that time and I thrashed that truck all over Southern California. From Anza Borrego to Death Valley and plenty of other places, too. It never failed to go where I pointed it and it never crapped out or left me in a lurch. That Ram Charger gave lots of fond memories. My current 4X4 is a lot more capable and I love it but, I really had a lot of fun in the Ram Charger.
Just want you to know I am a huge first gen Dodge fan. I am so excited for your videos with this old Ram Charger. So cool to see. Love the videos, keep them coming.
That was killer, wow, what a lot of fun you have out there. I think the Ram is such a neat vehicle and I cannot wait to see what you are going to do with it. I love the scenery and the drone footage, insanly beautiful out there!!
What a refreshing pace of some rides thru SH’s West Rim! This is a way to see how it handles some trails before you make some upgrades to it! It’s going to be a fun project! Love the drone filming to show the beauty of SH! Makes me miss that area! Sure counting the days to get back out & pay a visit to your shop!
EVs have better power delivery is some applications. Run that thing through the dunes every day for a month and see what happens to it is my question. Let's see how it does deep fording some water a few times on a trail also, because I know they are built to handle water but I just want to know how much. Basically, I have seen ICE vehicles fail so I want it sent to a Myth Busters type of extreme fail 😊👽
Great video Hollie!! That was something different. There is so much difference between the terrain that the Ram will handle compared to what the MM will handle!! The Ram is still a very cool old 4 wheeler!!
Hopefully you build this dodge. You will love e. Grew up with one and won't forget it. They are a fun ride. Big lift and tires and a good 440 or a built 360 you won't be disappointed. Love my dodge
Those rims are awesome on the dodge. The 70s to 80 international scout made some rims that looked like that, but we're rubber centers inside a steel rim.
Hollie Dear...great vid again. That furkid that was in the back of your new project RAM...who does he belong too? Cute furkid!! Have a great day today!! 😎
Love the old Ramcharger. I've had several old Dodge trucks the same body, and wheeled them. They're a great value for someone with some mechanical ability looking to get a 4wd. I've bought several for $500-600 that needed some basic work to get running again.
you bought one with a pos front axle controlled by vacuum. you get to throw away both front and rear axles. Hope for a 360 and make sure you do not get a lift that forces you to use the rear oem blocks. I like them. transfer case is good for now.

I love it, if there are any pieces and parts you guys remove from this truck and are just gonna toss I would love to arrange to pay to have them shipped and toss you guys some money for em as well!! I owned one of these, an 87, blue and silver with a 318ci engine. It was an absolute pig but it had more personality than a bronco and a blazer rolled into one. Wish I had never sold it. Be nice to it, they’re getting really hard to find.
The power is there for sure and the ability to have an independent motors controlling each corner of the vehicle opens up a lot of amazing capabilities from a traction and control stand point. The suspension leaves a lot to be desired, but then again very few people have actually pushed these vehicles past their limits - understandably…it’s not like spare parts availability is abundant. This thing really shines on the pavement, IMO. But they are way more capable than I originally imagined.
@@MischiefMakerTV I wasn't aware they had all-wheel independent drives. That's really cool! I don't mean to imply I think EV suspensions are better. They're heavier duty because they have to handle more weight.

Driving a stock 4-wheel drive, will make a true off roader out of you. No tricks, use your head and realize that it won't go where those tricked out crawlers go!
MORR and Trailmater videos are filled with comments from people asking why anyone would take a stock vehicle into no man's land. Finally, here's at least one answer to that question. 😂
There are those that just don't know better, and those that are looking for a challenge. I have always had stock height vehicles, and taken them places most people would not think of trying. I have not been stuck very often, and like the Ram Charger, I have usually been high centered, or popped a bead, or even popped a tire ( manzanita stumps are hard on tires. )

Love seeing the vintage vehicle. I'd take that over the Rivian any day. A little lift, a little bigger tires and some updates...Nice! It doesn't need much.

ESPECIALLY for all the electric car haters. I think new things are cool. Someone now needs to build a off road capable one with big tires. I hope that I didn't offend people over this comment. 😁👍
Funny story, they flew off the other day (not on the way home from Vegas on the highway) Rudy and his brother took it for a spin around our shop and they randomly flew off then 😂
That generation Dodge 4X4 just about required you to wear a kidney belt unless they were just about loaded up to max. On my W200 E20 special Power Wagon the ride didn't even start to soften up until there was close to 3 tons in the bed.
It did have major issues turning but that was from a shot power steering pump. Bump steer doesn’t seem to be an issue, but this baby is still pretty much bone stock. We’ll try and avoid that issue when we make some modifications, but at the moment we’re really happy with its performance pre-modification.
WestRim is so scenic, and always has a surprise! The RamCharger is going to be fantastic - just needs the right wheels and tires, a bit of lifting, and a nice interior! “I need some noises…”. Careful what you wish for! Rivian? Capable; we’ll see how it lasts in the long run.
