  • 1800 House veteran and artist Mary Lacoursiere, NHA Peter M. and Bonnie J. Sacerdote Chair of Education and Community Relations, describes the traditional process of creating scrimshaw, the delicate art form made famous by men at sea as a pastime during long whaling voyages, and how it is done today.
Nantucket Historical Association’s 1800 House program is dedicated to celebrating and reviving Nantucket’s rich tradition of early American decorative arts. We're excited to be able to bring this program online.

Please let me know which colors are suitable for your technique and if you allow a shop to buy them. In Europe your technique is almost unknown and I can't find materials. Thank you for all.

Researchers just made a new ivory substitute that mimics ivory. It's a uv curing resin called digory.

I have a scrimshaw necklace pendant that I bought on a wharf during a vacation to Maine around 1979. The artist said it was whalebone, and that it would become rare since there were laws being formed that will prevent using whalebone in the future. I have no certificate, only my memory. I am unsure if it can be sold as I get my estate together, and also it has yellowed, and should I, can I, whiten it?

Hello, I used to work for Nancy Chase back in the day. I have a tooth I would love to send an image of to you. It’s a civil war piece with a soldier the capital building and a naval steam ship. I just think you would enjoy seeing it. I’m not sure where to send it.
