No joke, I own the book, but I just wanted a list of exercises to practice. She goes a LOT into theory which is fantastic for a comprehensive understanding, but I just want to draw EDIT: thanks bro!
both times when you draw, you're actually using both sides of the brain at the same time... according to this video, this method seems to be based on a neuromyth
Actually it's not. I've taught workshops for 30 years using these methods. We realize people cannot ONLY use 1 side o their brain. What these methods do is allow us to use more of the spatial centers on the right side which are negatively impacted by our language centers located on the left side, which want to communicate meaning by representing the symbols of things rather than how the thing really looks. This struggle between seeing what really is, and imagining the symbols that represents them is what causes the frustration you feel when trying to draw through observation. These exercises limit the symbolic representations. The results if taught and practiced correctly are evidence that it works.
The left brain/right brain functions thing is pop psychology, and has been shown to be incorrect. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralization_of_brain_function#Pop_psychology Lateralization exists, but in many ways the opposite of what many people typically believe.
Check out this article: brainconnection.brainhq.com/2000/06/27/drawing-on-an-outdated-theory/ Basically - the neuroscience Edwards uses as explanation is outdated but her method brings results.
Sorry to say this but this misses the whole point of Betty Edwards. Read the book it's excellent. The faces / base exercise is way more involved than portrayed here.
Why did you explain about the two brain hemispheres?? Do YOU even know why BettyEdwards explained it in her book? I mean, you don't even explain the object of these exercises! Did YOU even understand what these exercises are about? It's not really about observation at all! It should help you understand the the two different drawing modes, and to actually switch OFF the left brain !! It works. Perhaps you shouldve get the actual book instead of the workbook only!
Yes, the core theory of the book is not represented but according to recent studies the whole "left brain" and "right brain" concept is not true. The entire brain is used in everything we do. That is not saying that the entire exercise is pointless or isn't a big help in drawing (I wouldn't use it with my students if it didn't). It is just our understanding actual reason it is helping is what is different now. Science is a bit of moving target like that. It basically comes down to that our brains are lazy, which is actually an evolutionary thing to conserve energy and resources. If your brain THINKS it knows what it is looking at it will cut out all it believes are not needed and only tell your hand to draw that it thinks it is SUPPOSE to look like, which is why we get so many cloud trees. This is also why hands and faces are so hard to draw. Drawing the picture upside down (especially if you block out parts of the picture you are not drawing) or contour drawing forces your brain to actually LOOK at what is front of it, like rereading a sentence you have misread. It is also why it is so uncomfortable to draw like this, just like exercising a muscle in a new exercise for the first time. You are forcing your brain to do more work than its used to and it is not happy (like making teenagers actually clean as oppose to shoving everything to one side). Its the same parts of the brain being used but without shortcuts.
Thank you. This is a great introductory video to Betty Edwards work. I appreciate your clarity and detail.

Dude, winning with the BBoys in the background…. Just glorious, fully.
Best video ever
In the monster vase exercise do we use the non dominant hand ?
💯
love the beastie boys tune in the background, nice touch =)
did you swap hands on purpose? Is that part of the exercise?
you don't need to swap hands.
Very interesting video!
Good job! :)
thanks
Sure I can control no problem which side of the brain I use . Come on

The left/right brain distinction is really more of an analogy.
