One potential stumbling block here: We’re so thoroughly Christianized that understanding pagan relationships to their deities can be difficult to grasp. Generally, pagans observed multiple gods, each with their own varied qualities/character. These gods were not looked to for what we’d call salvation; it was a give & take for worldly favor/blessings from an often capricious entity who may curse you. When Girard presents the scapegoat as deity, it’s in this context. The scapegoat kinda rises to that plane influence; if killing him brought about X result, he surely must’ve been something like these gods all along.
Btw those gods were/are real & they’re demons. Christ’s incarnation revoked ~ changed the metaphysical structure of reality ~ their relationship to his Creation

Interesting about how the ousted scapegoat can become a god or hero.
The are both the cause of all societies problems and the cure.
In the process new sacrifices or rules form.
