This DIY (Do It Yourself) How To Video shows how to remove and replace the spark plugs in a typical late-model BMW N62 V8 engine. The N62 V8 has been used in the following chassis and models:
* E60 5-series (2004 thru 2010 545i, 550i)
* E63 & E64 6-series (2004 thru 2010 645i, 645ci, 650i, 650ci)
* E65 & E66 7-series (2002 thru 2008 745i, 745Li, 750i, 750Li)
* E53 X5 (2004 thru 2006 4.4i, 4.8is)
* E70 X5 (2007 thru 2010 4.8i)
Whether you are replacing the spark plugs or the ignition coils (or both), this BavAuto DIY video will detail the steps and tools needed to complete the task. The procedures shown would also be applicable to the installation of the Bavarian Autosport High Performance Coils.
Details have been shortened and edited due to UA-cam requirements. See the full tech blog article at - blog.bavauto.co...

Replaced the plugs on my 2004 745Li yesterday using the Tite Reach wrench my wife bought me for Christmas this year. It was awesome. This was the third time I've changed my plugs and the first time I wasn't swearing at the evil little person at BMW who designed things where adult hands never fit. Thanks for all the vids and tools to keep our cars running.
hi guys I just did my bmw today took little under 2 hours for me all went well but the rear ones are a bit tricky but not the end of the world this was my first time doing plugs on a n62, thanks for the video guys keep them comin!!
We're glad we could help!
Absolutely amazing video with details and directions. Thank you for taking the time to make this video on how to change spark plugs and coils on this precious car. God bless you in all that you do.
Awesome, was struggling with the one next to the driver - your video helped!
you guys should make a DIY on how to replace the Final Stage Resistor in an e46
We do have that one on our "to do" list. Thank you for your input.
Do you need a slim sock ignored to get that spark plugs out
Great video. Do you have one covering the very popular N63 engine. Seems like the procedure would be quite a bit different from the N62. I own a 2011 550i xDrive and it's now time to change the plugs. Thanks.
Hi. Any info on n63?
So how do i remove the tip of the coil the rub er piece because mine is stuck inside sitting ontop of the opd spark plug
Great video. I am going to be doing this soon and this was very helpful. Thanks
I have a 2004 BMW x5i I just change the sparks plug and clean the valves but the car is till having the rough trottle promlem
Step 1
Unhook negative wire on the battery.
Nate “209” Diaz why?
Don’t think so but you go right ahead
Rob Hughes k
Otto, can I remove the clip off each coil one at a time while the engine is running to see which one is bad. I purchased 8 of these and I believe one or two are bad or weakening.

AMAZING and very understandable video, so let go !..i try...
Hey Which plugs do you recommend?
Not falling for the hype get brand new Bosch and will feel the same only thing different is red cap
Very good.
Do you have a video on how to replace the oil filter housing gasket on an m54, , e60 chassis?
No, we have not produced a video for the M54 oil filter housing gasket replacement yet.
Did he just say Bentley while showing us a BMW?
Bentley is the publisher of the manual.
Spark plug gap size? please help
Own a 645ci BMW V8, exellent video, explained the key points plus....
did you have access issues with the rear plugs on your 645ci?
Excellent video, Otto. You showed the technique for the aft left and right plugs. That's the ticket! Thank you!
where can i download the service manual....
Thank you guys for this video I replaced the spark plugs in my 2010 650i yesterday thanks to this video!! Keep up the good work.
I am getting ready to buy one today!! Any advice? It's a 2010 and has 97K miles on it.
Tom E - We don't recommend disconnecting the coils with the engine running, as the engine management computer can potentially be damaged. See our prior not to your first comment on this.
What about the N63 twin turbo 2009
Explain what you "high performance" ignition coils do??? How is better. Please don't say it's more powerful spark, PROVE IT!
Logic7repair bruh it is! My shit moving like a fucking liter bike even with a clogged converter
Hey were you working on the N62B48 engine (4.8) because the 4th last coil on the driver side I’m having trouble putting back in ( space is limited) and need some advice please
BavarianAuto I experienced oil leaking from the front of my cylinder head so I initially went in to replace the valve cover gaskets. My spark plugs were nearing replacement, so I ordered them along with hp ignition coils. Once inside, I noticed the seals on my spark plug tubes were completely worn off and I am now awaiting new spark plug tubes to finish the job...Otto, once this is finished, if it persists, can you think of anything else that would cause it to leak?? Thanks in advance for your help/time!!! (E63 '07)
Great video. How do you keep the bracket where you screwed the coil support in from coming off. I have a 2004 645ci and 3 of them came off. Is there a better way?
I’m so impressed with your video. A+ and God Bless. You guys are appreciated more than you know! I’ll be purchased parts from your website.
I have an N 62 BMW 655, 2008 where is the throttle position sensor located
You have video of valve cover gasket replacement?
Could you have used the 3/8 tite reach wrench to remove the positive jumper bracket ?
Is the best platinum or iridium spark plugs? My car is x5 e53
Hi BavarianAuto, thanks once again for the time you take to make these video for us to help with the repair of our BMW cars, thanks
Jjjjjjjjjjj
P00000llllllllllllllllll
(Kkkkkkk
Did you do a video on replacing the fuel injector for the same engine
On BOSCH site , there is recomended 28 Nm of TQ what reffers to 20 Fp of TQ. I head also when engine block is from Alluminum,momentum should be reduced by 5 example 28 Nm - so apply just 23 Nm. If 18 Fp is 24,4 NM so it is very safe just little over what should be on N62 block.. I have question about High performance coils. What i would gain over stock coils ?
18 FOOT pounds for spark plug torque? That's a LOT. Do you mean INCH pounds?
Futureb0y Dodge ram 4.7 is 20ft pounds so 18ft pounds seem correct
I need more details on plug four and eight. I need to know approximately how many F bombs and POS’s and I should have stayed away from an import’s before completion. It’s really important for me to know.
If I have oil on my coils and spark plugs, is it worth replacing spark plugs before replacing valve cover gasket? Will my new spark plugs become damaged?
Wow, @10:55 - actual torque values can be found in the Bentley Repair manual... :) it seems we've been watching some other car and not BMW.
Awesome video!! Noticed oil on my plugs. I’ll need to replace my valve cover gasket. Do you have a video on how to do that?
Im trying to get info on how to replace coils and spark plugs on a 2009 F01 750i N63 twin turbo. how to remove coils.
I have a 2011 550xi, any DIY for replacing spark plugs on N63? Stealership wanted 600 bucks!
I thought it would be kind of hard to get that rear ignition coil out but they came right out a little moving around
This helped tremendously with the rear coils thank you for the tip
I have two BMWs with 318i. I just replaced spark plugs after only 20K in one of them. Code P0300 & P0304 and running very badly. 3 of 4 plugs where bad. These misfire code are rather difficult to diagnose, especially not thinking the spark plugs were bad. I use a short length of rubber hose to start the plugs on install. I replaced the Bosch with NKG. This video was helpful. I also used anti seize. A video on scan code diagnose would be helpful. Thanks and I look forward to more videos.
What year is the car? Is it a US model?
Great video thanks for making this.
do you still use anti-seize on NGK plugs? Ive read on their website to not use anti-seize on NGK plugs- this will be for a N62- 645ci
We do recommend the anti-seize for any aluminum head application. This includes the N62.
we miss you!
Are there high performance ignition coils available for 2011 E92? I don't see them listed?
We do not yet have this style coil available in the High Performance version. Please check our web site once in a while. We should have them soon.
Nice work. Do y'all have any vids on replacing fuel injectors? Where are they located on a n62 motor?
+br3wskee Not currently. And .... they're way down ... there .....
Actually, the injectors are installed into the bases of the intake manifold runner ports. You can see the fuel rail and a couple of the injectors at time 4:53 in the video shown in this post: blog.bavauto.com/15427/bmw-diy-video-replacing-spark-plugs-and-installing-high-performance-coils-in-bmw-v8-n62-545i-750i-x5-etc/
Otto does the 645ci E63 require the steps needed at 7:59 for the rear coil and plug? Thanks for the video!
Yes, it likely does. Same chassis in the front of the car.
I have a 2008 E66, do I have to change the ignition coils when I change the spark plug
You do have to remove the coils in order to access the spark plugs, but the coils do not typically require replacement every time the spark plugs are replaced.
Amazing video!
What about the wires do.those need replacing
The "wires" are low tension as each plug has it's coil pack. They are lifetime service. There are no" secondary ignition wires" per se on modern engines. HTH - Sandy
merci
This can fix on my e60 bmw 525i 2006??
Yea it should but, you have less plugs and coils because it's a 6 cylinder
DO you have videos on the M6? Cause its a V10
No, we have done a video for the V10. However, the procedures will be similar to what is shown for the V8, here.
BavarianAuto any tips getting out the coils in cylinder 5 & 10?
i got it out by playing with it... let me know if u need details
Kingz Pakare
- please feel free to post a quick description to help other V10 owners.
how much is this kit?i read injectors alone cost 599
