Yet another genius unappreciated in his own time. If only he'd known how much joy his work still brings to so many.

    This is Gold Dust.
Hampson makes it clear what the ideals of Dare were...
"It expressed the ideals of the time., based on the UN organisation. We thought it was a brave new world, UNO was going to run everything, there was going to be a world government, all the bright ideas that everyone always has when they're young and idealistic seemed to be on the point of coming true ... they didn't of course, but, I think to an extent they expressed that feeling..."
    THAT is the thing!
DD's a true expression of the postwar ideals which were stifled all too soon during the '50's Conservative administration.
Why isn't that quote more widely known? It's the Dan Dare Creed!!
Bitching about the production of the strip is MUCH more intformative than the 'everything was lovely' version we usually hear.
And... Oh! The Team were doing THREE strips - not just DD!
And the models were built because they didn't have the original art!
This ALL makes much more sense than the 'Frank had lots of people doing one strip' story... and the insight into the decline of Picture Post..
And Frank was instrumental in getting strip artists PAID a living wage! Thanks Frank!
And ... the reason the Eagle was killed was ... because the Opposition wanted to get rid of the Competition ...
And... they were originally drawing from life - the photos only happened so his dad could get to bed! Imagine if there were no photos - we wouldn't have those iconic 'DD' poses that we so enjoy spotting as they are repeated between different strips.
"Why KItty Hawke was a failure" - Again, a few casual sentences make so much sense.
His pain as he suddenly fiddles with his pen whilst he calmly tells of the death of Eagle, his time at Ladybird, near suicide, his cancer, expecting death and teaching is so distressing ...
Oh! He took Open University courses! Who could have the presumption to teach Hampson?
"I want BA on the headstone. I want to be buried with dignity". Oh yes indeed.
Ta Brighton Polytechnic. A true memorial.
