So much critical negative comment. This man works in a nursery. When you're selling plants to the public, you do everything you can to insure their health and vitality. You separate you hosta clumps in a way that does the least damage to the roots. You use a small shovel because it's a more discrete tool in this situation. Sterilization is a precaution against spreading anything from disease to weeds to pesty things from where you previously dug with that tool. Great job. As a professional gardener, I also take these and other kinds of precautions so I don't bring weed seeds and plant diseases from one garden to another. In my own home garden, I do or don't do as I please. Happy Gardening to All! Have a Great Spring! Plants are Amazing, aren't they?
Ppl coming on here to see how to split a hosta are probably not working in a nursery and selling to the public but moving it in their own yard. Also, most nurseries don't plant plants in the ground that they intend to sell. I feel like you're related to this guy or something. Any fool can see this is completely ridiculous.

@@karenlewis9565 This is how I divide my Hostas, but then it would disturb to jam a shovel into any living entity. To each their own, I guess. Both nurseries in our area plant their Hosta stock in the ground and propagate from them every year. Much less expensive than ordering dormant roots, plus more control over disease.
Hostas are VERY hardy. I have 60, planting over 15 years. It's not complicated. My steps, exactly like this video.
Saving the roots by cleaning and removing the dirt and doing little to no damage to the bulbs is great. I use to do the shovel splitting but I noticed the growth on the next year wasn't as fast as I saw for my families, turns out they did it a bit more like you are. Thank you for the info!!!

Awesome video, my mom used to do this for me for my houses I've flipped and sold however, my mom is now in her 5th stage of Dementia she never taught me but this video is self explanatory so I can continue on the tradition with your help. Again thank you so very much!!!!

I’m going to take some hostas from my mother-in-law’s new house. The one she moved in to, with her new husband, needs major dividing of all her hostas! And she has A LOT of hostas everywhere! And this video helped me out tremendously when I take some! You weren’t boring to watch, kept it simple with the 3 steps, had great tips and I feel confident about caring for hostas now since I’ve never grown any yet! Thank you:)💕
I've been dividing hosta for over 30 years. I don't remove the dirt. I simply take an old clean serrated butcher knife and cut between shoots. Done and done.

@@amc-9000 do that. And don't worry. Hostas are hardy and resilient. There are some other plants that are particular of how and when you divide them, but not hostas.

Such much work! They're hostas! Dig up the clump with a shovel; lay the clump on its side; take said shovel and put it against the root ball; step on the shovel to divide; replant.

Thank you for such a concise and easy-to-follow set of instructions! You raise hostas professionally, I trust you to know which methods are most beneficial to this plant. I’ve not tried getting the roots on mine all cleared off as you have done here; since I have quite a few to divide and move, I’ll enjoy experimenting to see if the ones I do this way do better as they grow. Way easier with a long handled shovel. Dig it up 10 seconds...cut it into slices (like a pizza) and plant. About a minute. Forget about all the washing, looking for divisions, etc.
Tom Aaron is exactly right. I have been dividing Hosta at least 3 times as long as you say you have been at that business. NEVER has it been necessary to do all that work. I have a zero loss percentage. Many other commenters seem to find your method laborious and totally unnecessary.
Video is way to complex. The pizza method works. Even one inch of plant stalk with the crown will grow but will take a long time. Andrew

That’s what I used to do. But forgot how. I want to leave the hosta where it is but it’s HUGE. I want to thin it out. So I can just cut into the plant and dig out roots for that portion right? I liked the video even though we all had success doing it the pizza way.

Wonderful plant, I have accumulated a garden of hosta from one single plant by using this technique, I give them to friends family and neighbours.
I just dig the entire Hosta plant up with a "foot shovel" and divide with an old serrated kitchen knife into four wedges (like pizza cuts), with no rinsing. Then, I cut about an inch or so of the tip off each slice and toss in compost. I've read that the centre is old and woody and should be removed. That being said, thanks for your version of dividing!
Yep dirt removel is helpful but only needed if YOU cant see where to cut. But clean cutting tool is a must, keeps viral transfer to a minium. I always add rocks to the bottom with water and good potting soil and fertilizer if needed. Lil less work than this way, but still get great plants.
That looked very easy! My neighbor has a lot of these plants. They’re on vacation, so I may dig up a few of theirs for us and put theirs back. Saves money! Thanks again!

I always divide mine when all the leaves are gone in the spring and the shoots are just starting to show. I just use the shovel to cut full depth pieces off and leave the dirt on. And they spread like weeds.
OMG. I thought early spring was the time to divide. I dug it up like u r, but that’s where the similarity ends. After digging up the thing and watching videos, I filled a tub of water, but it was ineffective . I used a axe head and hammer quickly cutting it into four pieces. These I quickly replanted them. Not a minute too soon cause they immediately started to grow.
I just use a shovel to split mine. Never had a problem.

Fascinating to watch you, a real professional ! I just dig out the clump , cut it into pieces with an electric saw and replant the cuttings. Works just the same.

I used to dig up the hole plant but it was to much work. Now I use a knife I slice trough a part of the plant and dig around that portion and pull it up. Been dividing them like this for years with no problem
I am still learning how to do this work for the garden

I have propagated easily 500 Hosta.
Never once did it take me more than 40 seconds. I slice off pieces just as it pokes through the ground.
Add a little Bone meal as you only get under the roots once.

Easiest time to propagate is spring. Simply slide shovel through the middle of the fingers and drop into Pre dug hole. Their are hundreds of varieties. Take note as you want to mix and match. I share mine with others with hopes of gaining a new variety from them.
When transplanting I always dig the new hole bigger than necessary and dump some aged compost in.

It would be nice to know what time of year is best to divide hostas, and also how much space to leave between the bunches while replanting. Also what kind of fertilizer is best to use and schedule for fertilizing.

Wow, from the comments it seems like the subject of Hosta splitting is just as divisive as politics! Funny how everyone presumably watched the video for guidance, then half of them were derisive because an expert didn’t support their ‘Shovel Hacking’ method! If you don’t like this guy’s gardening dogma, zip it and scroll on. 🙄
Thank you. Why do you wait until all the leaves are fully grown? Wouldn’t it be easier to separate a week or so after the new spring growth is pushing up?
It is, but also harder to judge if the plant had overgrown its spot when the leaves aren’t out.. I use a soft cotton web D-ring belt to cinch the leaves and shoots out of the way if I divide in the fall-works like a charm!
I can see that by de-dirting you lose far fewer roots, therefore less root disturbance.
Except for the MASSIVE amount of root disturbance when you washed them. No root hairs left after that

Why does the soil need to be soaked off of the roots? I have always taken off a piece and transplanted it.
TheChartruese - He said it was more necessary for heavy clay soils that might hold the roots so tightly together.
He's doing it because for his business, he'll need to re-pot the plants in lighter soil like peat moss and mulch to cut down on shipping costs. It's not necessary, but it does make separating the hostas a little easier.
You don’t need to. It will put a lot of stress on the plant because you’ve removed all of the root hairs and it needs to recover from that.
So my hosta are from the city, I just take a shovel and split it while in the soil, they always grow.

I’ve been separating hostas a long time . It seems a lot of extra steps to do it this way . Just use a spade shovel to separate.

I dig up hostas with shovel in the spring, get a bow saw cut them into 4 parts and plant again and get 3 new plants every year
How do you keep the slugs off when it’s in the ground? They get into pots, so surely they devour the plants in the garden!

Groundhog ate my plant. I managed to rescue a couple of leaves with a root crown, but there aren't really any roots. The leaves have become yellow, should I try refridgerating it to see if I can get the roots to grow? How long?
Lots of good info here. A bit more complicated than what I've done but... once piece of advice for future videos. Massive overkill! Just chop it with a spade & it's done in a minute, no need for all that sterilising & washing. Many youtubers now are vastly overcomplicating stuff just to stretch it out for advertising. They're trying to reinvent the wheel.

How much should it have grown before you separate it? I got a new and small one yesterday and was thinking about separating it in a week or two. It has many leaves already and a big root ball, but it doesn’t look as big as yours. Does anyone have any tips?

I love all types of Hostas. My problem is keeping rabbits, and other small critters from coming into the yard and tearing them up. I've used store-bought chemicals to repell them, it works for a day or two and they're back tearing and eating them up again. Any suggestions???
Why do this when the hosta is in full leaf? Do it early in the season when the leaves are still in tightly coiled "spikes" just poking through the ground. Dig it up with a big shovel, place the clump down and then split it however many times with the shovel or slice with an old kitchen knife or any other sharp implement. Then simply replant the divisions and give them a good drink. There's no need to be tender or de-dirt - Hostas are tough buggers.

Someone please help. My two hosta plants keep withering down in number, I used to have a bunch of stalks and leaves in each pot, now only have 4 in each one. I've tried dividing them but the roots are PLASTERED in place :( what do I do to get them bushier again

Spring is the best time, in a couple of days you will see new growth, especially if it rain,now its June and still not too late, I did some two weeks ago and I could see new growth already ,because of all the rain we get

I left a bunch of hosts next to the fire pit i burn my debris from landscaping jobs. They sat there for 2wks had burn marks from embers. There divided and. Planted looking great. Dont listen to all people on here guys

Hostas are exceptionally hardy and don't generally need to be babied like this. I guess if hostas were my business, I'd be extra cautious like that. But it's not as hard as he's making it. I sure don't sterilize any garden tools. 1) Use a spade to dig it up. 2) Chop the roots into sections with your spade. 3) Plant them. That's it. Especially for hostas.

my hostas are just starting to grow for the season...buds and small leaves about two or three inches right now. This is when I usually divide the plants, but as they continue to grow, their growth seems a bit stunted (only on the ones I divided) while the untouched hostas get much larger. The hostas I divide now won't get big sized again until next year. is that normal?
Yes normal for me. I moved about 14 fairly large ones last yr in the month of June ( retaining wall next to them fell) Everyone survived!! After I had transplanted the were a bit to grow but non died. This year, all great in their new location! ( I did put good loose dirt in area where I replanted)

WAAAAAY too much work, but it looks professional. With the right spade, you can split in the ground then dig. Has to be a sharp spade like a Radius Root Slayer.
