    An interesting story about Winry's earrings. In the past, Ed brought her earrings, whenever he busted his Automail; to keep her from getting too mad at him. But every time he did, Winry would add another piercing to her ears to accommodate the new earring; she didn't want to swap them out, because she appreciated the gifts that much. Because of this, Ed stop buying her earrings, out of guilt. Knowing this, makes the fact that Winry entrusted her earrings to Ed that much more significant.
    Another interesting fact, Winry decided to pierce her ears in the first place because of Hawkeye, and Hawkeye decided to grow her hair long because of Winry; simple reasons for simple people.

      That's one of the OVA shorts, I think. There's one about when Riza and Hawkeye first met, one when Hughes, Mustang, and another Ishvalan soldier were in booth camp together before the genocide, one about the earrings, and one where Ed and Al met someone else who'd attempted human transmutation.

    "Blood brother of mine", the show is about brothers throughout. That's why he chose Von Hohenheim. Father was grateful to and cared for his brother in his own twisted way.

  • @stardmg
    @stardmg Рік тому +17

    A few things: When Hohenheim said "he said it was for an experiment", the "he" in question was his slavemaster. So technically while his blood was used, Hohenheim's master is the root cause of all of this. Also, the reason why Hohenheim suddenly looks like his current self after the transmuation circle was dug out is because it took *decades* to do it, which is why the King complains that it "took long enough". Understandable, since it was all dug by hand, all around the country.

    • @no1guy825
      @no1guy825 17 днів тому

      and that slavemaster was the court alchemist. the reason they performed this work is obvious, whether or not it was an accident. they attempted to reach God or the place where God exists. As a result they extracted a piece and that piece possessed unfathomable knowledge. As Ed says, the portals hold all knowledge or every secret alchemy has to offer...so they were reaching. And using blood they were able to tether part of the Entity to the physical world. But, because it is based around human blood it is no longer a pure piece of that Entity....it is a fraction of that unfathomable entity with very human DNA. And because it is only a portion of each it is neither. So it goes about trying to rise above its humanity while being intrinsically tied to it. It is a tragic confused existence and its the result of meddling too much with forces beyond comprehension and trying to put things where they don't belong.

    I don't know how the humunculus came up with that name in universe, but Hohenheim's name is based on a IRL alchemist called Paracelsus, full name: "Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim".

    16:10 that's the name of Paracelsus, one of the most well known alchemists of all time. Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (yes, I had to google the full name).

  • @rafaelcalmon2858

    When he says he is a philosopher's stone, he actually means it literally, as wild as it sounds.
    In the transmutation sequence, his actual body got fully transmuted just like it was with Al's.
    His current body is literally not flesh and blood. It's a huge philosopher's stone shaped like a human body.

    • @cobusvanderlinde6871
      @cobusvanderlinde6871 Рік тому +1

      As mentioned by Doctor Marcoh in the first episode he appears in, the Philosopher's stone can take on many forms, it can be a stone/gem or it can be a weird liquid like the one he keeps with him, or in Van Hohenheim's case it can take the shape of a human body- it having an animating soul should be no surprise as that is sort of the point of a philosopher's stone, containing souls.

  • @kennethmorgan8795
    @kennethmorgan8795 Рік тому +22

    Von is 100% a philosopher's stone, but that doesn't mean he isn't still a person... which is of course something Ed brought up earlier in the 5th lab: A human body isn't what makes you a person, it's who you are... your wants and desires, your soul defines if you are still a person. And if doing something like helping the woman who looked after your kids because she is in pain (and dying a slow death) isn't HUMAN I don't know what is.

    Fun fact, Homonculus' first name for Hohenheim was actually part of the name of THE alchemist, who Hohenheim is named after: Paracelsus (AKA: Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim).
    This show has a lot of references to classical alchemy.

    Imagine all the millions of people screaming in hohenheim's head. Imagine if the biggest day of your life were coming up, only to find yourself nothing but formless energy in a raging void when you awake. Imagine what _you_ would scream to your captor, knowing that IF you were ever to see those you love again, _they would have to die, and join the screaming void aswell._

    I gotta say I've never watched the english dub for Brotherhood but damn, some of the deliveries on these lines are top notch. From Ling's "Langfan!!" in the battle with the Bradley and Gluttony to Hohenheim's "I'm a philosopher's stone in the form of a man. That's *what* I am." I am really liking the care put into conveying this show's several complicated emotional moments in a way that isn't cringy compared to the sub, it's really impressive.
    Also, your reaction to Hohenheim healing Izumi was so raw, one of the best reactions I've seen in someone. I love how attached to the characters you got.

    In a twisted way Dwarf in the Flask did give equally back to Hohenheim.
    Dwarf gained life, physical body and sentience (Dwarf already had knowledge)
    Van was given Identity, Freedom and Immortality.
    But still Dwarf is inside a Flask, in a way. A Container that can be destroyed, although Dwarf can repair it as it gets damaged, but in the end that container can't be fixed at some point and Dwarf is gone...like any other person when their container is broken.

    the hohenheim twist is my favorite twist in all of anime because it goes against so much of what we've seen in media. Hohenheim looks like the bad guy, he was an absent father, he has powers no ones seen before (you see his immortality in the manga before this episode I think), and you think if he's not working for the bad guys he definitely has a connection from the very beginning .
    even if he turns out he's not a POS completely, he definitely did bad stuff working for/with father and needs to be redeemed. Then this episode comes out and it's completely different from what you've expected as a viewer. Hohenheim isn't an acomplice who got cold feet, he's another freaking victim of Father and didn't even want anything to do with immortality or philosopher stones. He wasn't even aware of the original carving the crest of blood plan, only that the king would become immortal.
    It was such a perfect twist

    Father is the source of Alchemy. Hoenheim is the source of Alcuhestry. And Hoenheim left because he could feel waht Father was up to, and he's been working to thwart it subtly.

    Homunculus only ever wanting to leave the flask is actually most likely true and perfectly normal. It’s not so much manipulative, as in the moment, he probably did just want to leave the flask.
    He just doesn’t feel satisfied after this, though, and seeks more.
    His pride as a homunculus even makes him shed the seven sins from himself, leaving him as a really shallow villain.
    He feels ashamed of his seven sins, and envies the humans who can so easily move forward despite their own limitations and sins.
    He becomes indolent, believing that he wouldn’t need to move a muscle to gain what he wants, letting his pawns move for him.
    He feels contempt and wrath for the humans who don’t want to just lay down and die for his goal.
    He only sees relationships between humans as a “breeding” ritual, never looking past the surface of WHY people actively seek out those relationships rather than just “mating” with whoever they want.
    All his sins laid bare, and he cannot accept them and live on. He still feels as if he’s “in the flask” so to speak.

  • @anyathepanther7977
    @anyathepanther7977 Рік тому +4

    They can't really "open" the Flask and let him out, he would die.
    The blood sinks into the ground and leaves a Mark. (That is actually true, which is why even after years have passed you can still find remnads of it at a crime scene)
    And with sach a Big Transmutation circle, their gonna need ALOT of it.

    Everybody and their Mom has already told you that Theofaustus Bombastus was the Name of an IRL Alchemist, so im gonna switch the subject:
    The Ishvalins might remind you of the people of the middle East, becouse they both live in the Desert. But Arakawa was actually inspired by a Minority in Japan, who lived on the North island and sufferd alot.
    The dwarf in the Flask is an actual Concept, but more in a theoretical way. If you Google Humonculus you will find pictures of what looks like a fetus in a Glass with a List next to it.

    interesting fact: hohenheim has over 500,000 souls inside of him and because of equivelent exchange. if each life grants him 60 to 80 years of life that means his life span would be between 30,000,000 and 40,000,000 + million years

  • @hotlinechernobyl5157

    no he litterally is a Philosophers Stone in the form of a man. you can think of a stone like a battery filled with souls. you can exchange those souls for a nearly bottomless supply of transmutation energy. remember that the stones can take on any shape.
    Hohenheim is a little different from the stones we've seen as of yet, in that he's sentient, and how he interacts with the many souls in his body, but that's for a later episode.

In the 2003 anime it was Mustang, making it more difficult because one of their own countrymen, (especially someone as high up as Mustang) doing something so unforgivable hurt so much, and someone like Scar who was supposed to be the villain of the story, was much easier to make a victim of the war that the Amestrians started.
