  • Teams the world over use attack shapes off 9, but getting it right is a different matter! In this video I provide some rugby analysis on the roles of the players involved in the shape off 9 to explain how the Atlanta were able to break the NOLA defensive line.
Major League Rugby is now in its 3rd week and I'll keep posting videos on aspects of the game throughout the championship! Please do leave me your feedback down in the comments!

@@GeraintDaviesGDD brilliant! Will be great for a newer fan base in America to see how the teams are using shapes and moves in their tactics.

How do you choose between a pod off 9 or a pod off 10

This often comes down to a teams style. Playing off 9 means that the play is closer to the gain-line and that the defence have less time to press. Playing off 10 requires an extra pass and is therefore deeper so further from the gainline. A lot of teams go for play off 9 off an edge then play from 10 from around the 15m mark. That's becoming less popular though and we're seeing either tight shapes of 10 or variety of shapes off 9.

Great question and answer. Also, reading the ref plays a part. A lot of refs are giving priority to immediate release by the ball carrier once tackled and much less focus on tackler release and roll away. That gives a big advantage to the defending side and makes continuity harder, so playing closer to your forwards (off 9) and giving the defence less time to set and flood the ruck (by running hard off 9 and hopefully securing quick ball) becomes a safer option. You might also be looking at how the ref rules on side entry to the ruck and whether they focus more on the defending or attacking side.
You might also be looking at whether you have a more mobile set of forwards than your opponent, or are losing the forward battle in close and so try to move the ball a bit further away - but you will need a 9 with a quick, accurate pass to 10 and an accurate pod off 10 when it comes to clean out.
