I never fully appreciated just how nuanced architectural photography can be. Thank you Eric and Mike for your unique perspectives. I learned an incredible amount about composition, process, and overall thinking when it comes to creating a beautiful photograph.
As both an Architect, and a photographer, it was really interesting to see each of of your takes on the different photos. Disciplines aside each of us will always have specific tastes and interests, and that's what makes our work unique! No one is wrong, and one one is right; it's just different.
Really great video! As a cabinetmaker, I always want to see my work highlighted, but when I step back and humble myself, I realize that it is the work of so many that in turn makes my work shine. I enjoyed the two perspectives from an architect and a photographer. Meshing those two together really enhances the quality of the photos. Great conversation! Very insightful video, loved the whole conversation between both of you guys and I am glad to be the emerging artist winner for this year! Loved your analysis of Jameel art center shot, its completely real, there is no sky replacement but that is the effect you usually get when using a very long telephoto lens (200mm and above), it makes everything looks flat and 2D and with minor angle adjustments you can get rid of a lot of distractions in the frame or the background.

Eric and Mike, 27:53 "a theme to your pick of Best" : one of my jobs during College in Santa Fe was delivery/pickup of Fine Art. I delivered purchased art from Galleries and Picked up new work from Artist's studios across the nation. Style of work aside, I was at Michael Atkinson's studio and remarked on a 36"x48" landscape with a 1"man near the bottom right, that his watercolors made me feel small. His shocked response was " maybe the best compliment ever".

As a student applying to my university’s architecture program at the end of this month I know I can always turn to the 30x40 channel for answers to questions and new insights on all elements of practice such as photography.
It is hard to describe how much value comes from this interview. It is a really good idea having at the same table an architect and an architectural photographer. They are both very close to the architectural project but at the same time they have very different perspectives on it. Just thank you guys!!! You are the best. 💪

Hey Eric, I‘ve been watching you ever since I started getting more interested in architecture. When I watched you the first time nothing made sense to me because I had no knowledge and it was over a year until architecture school started. Now, I‘m in the 4th semester and the more I study, the more your choices make sense. It‘s been a journey watching you doing things which seemed like some sort of incognito code to me and now I understand a lot of details and your decision-making in the progress. I don‘t know much but I am ready to learn for the rest of my life so I can, one day, become a great architect just like you. Cheers

YES! I just been binge watching all Mike content I could find (his fstoppers episodes are the best!) recently, you are just in time! Totally didn't expected this but definitely waiting for more from you two! I would LOVE to see two of you doing real project together. You cinematography and photos are real exceptional so I am really curious how cooperation with architecture photography specialist would go :) Especially in terms of "photoshop it or leave it" - I love Mike's work however I tend to very often NOT to agree with way pros showcasing the house - changing window views, erasing some columns that doesn't look good etc... I think it can be OK for Vogue or other magazine shoot but it CAN'T be for offers photos, to me it's beyond tricking customer/buyer in my opinion.

This is going to be useful. I'm just about to start a 7 week intensive 3DS Max architectural viz course. So learning how to compose the shots will overlap with digital viz. As it's still setting up cameras like in the real world, just digitally. I have been thinking of getting some photography books on composition etc. Thanks, great content as always my friend.

can you do a video on measurements. like i never know how long to make a garage wall or how tall walls to do. just like average sizes and maybe talking about other things related to measurements.

For the parking lot shot w the mosque , parking lots are almost *always * positioned in-front of the the structure so ppl don’t get late to go to the pray
I'm looking at an MCM in south Florida that has a fireplace and I have no idea what to do with it. One day a year it drops to 60 at night. I don't want to modify the architecture, but need an alternate use for this black hole in the wall. The photo with the fireplace made me think of this.

There is something to be said about authenticity in representation. It's easy to manipulate images yet hard to show restraint. Are we capturing/uncovering ideas or fabricating them? Technical knowledge is great, creativity is great too, but when these two things modify or remove the essence or soul of the idea, you have to ask what is being accomplished?

Amazing talk with so many great tips and advice but I found that 99% of these look like 3D renders and not real photographs and I wondered would you be able to tell after post anyway? I really questioned the authenticity of most of these shots....they were all stunning but looked fake to me
@@30by40 specifically to resolve a confusing alignment of the pendant cable with the exterior edge of the opening beyond. Panning involves simply turning the camera, which would keep that alignment. I am not sure of the exact term for it if it dolly doesn't work, but the station point of the view needs to move either just a hair to the right or just a hair to the left in order to free that cable from the lines beyond. Likewise for the adjacent pendant cable, which right now aligns with the corner beyond. It is a great series, don't get me wrong. I am just too obsessed with composition over subject most of the time, so small things like that are more noticeable to me than they should be. Thank you for the reply!

I see portrait misused in many instances presented here. It has it's place, and uses. Many don't make the cut in my opinion.
