Fun Fact about this game Famicom Disk System version: The Famicom Disk System version came with mini figurines based on the Seven Lucky Gods from the game!
I love Kiki Kaikai Yakumo. I still have my PC Engine version after all these years. Still take it out regularly. The other ports look amazing as well. But the PC Engine version will be my personal favorite! Anthony...
oh I've ever played this on my PC-Engine when I was a kid, and damn this game is a big challenge, so many things on the screen tho not crazy like traditional danmaku SHMUPs.
Really wierd that the MSX2 port has choppy scrolling. In fact it has a vertical scroll register (but not a horizontal one!) So in theory only the horizontal scrolling should be choppy and even then there are tricks around it that work spectacularly well! I expected that kind of scrolling from an MSX1 game, not an MSX2 game!
The Disk System version of kiki kai kai is actually a sequel, according to the Japanese manual's story suggests. I'll blame the console division of Taito at the time which though that rather than making a straight port of the arcade game, turning the game into an action adventure game will be a better idea. (As we can see in Zelda 2: Adventure of Link and Castevania 2: Simon's Quest, adventure and RPG elements didn't seen to match well with the action genre).
I love your videos. When it's a game I don't know yet, like this one, you talk about it in a way that makes it interesting and it makes me want to try the game. And when it is a game I do know, you have good arguments about it! Keep up the excellent work! I would definitely sub to you on Patreon, but I wish I had enough money to do donations :/
Bro, this video is six years old. Maybe a remastered version of Kiki Kaikai on Battle of the Ports might be a great suggestion, plus you can include the Super Famicom, PS4 remake and the Game Boy Advance versions. Sure, they're not based on the first game in the series, but I'd really like to see them as bonus versions.
Great feature of one of the most charismatic games from japan, also the Pc engine steals the show :D, also I thought there was a super famicom port, but that just have to be kiki kaikai 2.
I really enjoyed the sequel, Pocky and Rocky, on the SNES back in the day. Unfortunately it's one of those super expensive games now, like Space Megaforce, that were great but never got much attention.
Retro Core I've not played it either, plus they failed to secure the Kiki Kaikai license. To me the series ended with the GBA game released around 2000 or so (I can't remember the exact year). So to me, the series has 4 games, and that's how it is. The Wii game will not be getting a play from me at all.
I played Super Nintendo's Pocky & Rocky so much that these versions look kinda outdated to me, lol. But I understand why SNES is not here, as it's not really an arcade port like these. That said, the PC Engine seems to be the better of the home console ports, and the one to go for. The GBA version doesn't look bad neither.
It doesn't really mean anything in English. Probably something along the lines of strange people of the strange land. It really is hard to give this a meaning in English. Maybe it would be better just saying it means Ghost Land?
the word "kiki" may mean "strange" or "mysterious", "kaikai" means "the world of [Japanese traditional] monsters", so we could call it "Strange Monster World". the first "kai" means monsters instead of just ghost, refering from the Jap word like "youkai" which means the monster. the second "kai" which is from the word "sekai" which means the world.
Yes, this is true but they're are based upon the Arcade game. That was kind of common in the Famicom. Strider, Bionic Commando, Rygar and others are all very different games on the Famicom.
Christopher Sobieniak Oh right, I get you know. Yeah, you're all alone in this version. THere's a TV Plug'n Play release of this game too but it's had the main character sprite changed to a blad monk. I've not seen it in person but I have seen screen shots. It is an emulation of the arcade though, not a reprogrammed port.
When you said the PC Engine version was expensive I just had to go see for myself since it was one of the more affordable games on the system when I bought it a few years ago. And sure enough it went up just like Burning Angels, Legend of Valkyrie and the PC Engine console itself. Don't get it. Its not like they're rare or anything.
It's all about demand. The Saturn went through a similar situation a few years back. The PC Engine is now at it's peak of retro collecting meaning that even in Japan many games cost an awful lot as do any of the CD based consoles.
These comparisons are great...I like the arcade music and would like to get the pc engine version but could probably buy an everdrive for the price...how much does the gba go for?
+Retro Core oh wow now it's coming back I believe I have Pocky & Rocky 1 & 2 for the snes packed away somewhere but that gba version in U.S. is 50-80 bucks and the Japanese one around 19 then : )

Sayo-chan is adorable!
Wow, never heard or read of the Arcade game and never ever heard of or played any port - must be a BotP first for me. Thank for the enlightenment.
Really? Nice to provide you with a title that's fresh :) There's two Kiki Kaikai games on the SFC / SNES which are called Pocky & Rocky in the US.
Haha okeyy xD During the video i was not sure if this game had something to do with the Pocky & Rocky's games, looks similar.
+Retro Core That's the best most of us outside Japan had ever known of this game, even if those were sequels.
I see. I guess the western bootleg arcade didn't made it state side. It was known as Knight Boy for some reason.
That game where you get to be a miko (priestess).
I love Kiki Kaikai Yakumo.
I still have my PC Engine version after all these years. Still take it out regularly. The other ports look amazing as well. But the PC Engine version will be my personal favorite!
Anthony...
Thw PC Engine version is probably the best home conversion. I would have to totally agree with that. The music is really good on the PCE as well. :)
Yeah, it's pretty close to the original arcade game. A well made port.
yes i love this :) ost so good

I guess it just bolis down to dodgy programming.
@@RetroCore yep, maybe they weren't familiar with the hardware

That's right. The disc system isn't really a direct port of the Arcade game and in my opinion suffers big time because of it :(
Sayo-chan's design reminds me of Reimu from Touhou PC-98 games...

No worries about the Patreon. I'm just happy that you have subscribed :) I'm also happy that you enjoy the show.
Retro Core Thanks, that's good to know :)
There exists a LaserDisc version but that one is the rarest port out of all of the ones mentioned in this video.
I never knew there was. Laser Disc version.
I played Kiki Kai Kai recently on Taino Milestones 2 on my Switch and it’s an interesting game. As far the ports they’re a mixed bag.
PC Engine at 5:37
Already been 4 years since you're made that one ?
Crazy how quick time goes by...
It sure is. I still remember making that title card because I had a problem with the boarder on it.

Hmm. I would like to remaster all the original videos without voiceovers first.
Curious, I never noticed that rubber band camera effect in my play through on the Wii U virtual consol, works fine to me.
I wonder if they adjusted it?

Yeah, even in Japan the SFC version of Kikikaikai and the follow up cost a lot!
Great series, Taito got the ball rolling, Natsume pushed it full speed ahead. Definitely not a series for people who are scared of hard games.
I never played the Wii game released by StarFish but it does have that cheap flash game look to it like many of their Wii games.
Retro Core I've not played it either, plus they failed to secure the Kiki Kaikai license. To me the series ended with the GBA game released around 2000 or so (I can't remember the exact year). Bloodreign1 I received crappy reviews anyway just like Star Fish's other games.
Retro Core Yeah, the game looked like, pardon the French, ass.
And now natsume Atari is going to put the remake of the snes game in stores.
I played Super Nintendo's Pocky & Rocky so much that these versions look kinda outdated to me, lol. But I understand why SNES is not here, as it's not really an arcade port like these.

Think i would have liked a p.c. engine, good little system and does some nice arcade conversions.
The PC Engine is always full of surprises. It's a great little system.
I know this video is almost 6 years old, but the Famicom and Gameboy Advance games are both their own games, not ports of the Arcade game.
Yes, this is true but they're are based upon the Arcade game. That was kind of common in the Famicom. Strider, Bionic Commando, Rygar and others are all very different games on the Famicom.
Didn't they do a sequel to this on the SNES?
Yes, that's right. In fact there are two SNES games following on from this one.
Just no tanuki to help you!
Christopher Sobieniak that's right. Oh hang on. No, I'm Sure the raccoon is in both SNES games.
Retro Core I just meant this first Kiki Kaikai game. I know this guy was in the SNES games.
Christopher Sobieniak

Wow,msx scrolling is so fuckin bad and makes me eye cancer! But nice video of a nice game, great work, yakumo ;)
Tbh, that's the entire MSX library for you. Even the best shumps still had that damn terrible scrolling.
IMPOSIBLE COMO EL SOLO
Retro Core sounded a bit like Gianothan Pesaresi (Neutronized) in this video. Maybe that's just me.
First...............WOO !
These comparisons are great...I like the arcade music and would like to get the pc engine version but could probably buy an everdrive for the price...how much does the gba go for?
Congrats!
Hmm, the GBA one in Japan is only about 2000 yen but you can also buy this in the west under the name of Pocky & Rocky plus Bekky.
+Retro Core oh wow now it's coming back I believe I have Pocky & Rocky 1 & 2 for the snes packed away somewhere but that gba version in U.S. is 50-80 bucks and the Japanese one around 19 then : )
