When I discovered this song in the 90s, I was blown away that 80s music could be that "deep" and profound. As a grunge loving 90s music kid, we all thought 80s music was vapid and silly. Oh were we wrong....lol Now I know better...thank you Nik ❤
It is a metaphor for the analog to digital age ..and how we slowly traded our humanity souls for our little digital masters ...and here we are ...40 years later
This song is now officially 40 years old and having heard it randomly today in a Trader Joe's in LA I realize it more perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being in your 40s in the year 2024 than Mr. Kershaw could have ever imagined.
I randomly heard this song today in a truck stop coming home from work I almost didn't stop there but decided to anyway although they didn't have what I wanted the fact that I got to hear a small bit of this beloved classic definitely made the stop worth it this was a song I completely forgot about but love love love very much. Still rocking Nik Kershaw in 2024 baby.
Was reminded of this song while playing Song Pop this a.m. I really liked this song in Pretty In Pink. It was just one of those songs you sang while watching the movie for the zillionth time.
40 years huh, can it have been that long already? I suppose so. The world seemed so different then, but I was just a child and so very naieve about everything. Well at least I'm young enough to know that everything taught to me was a lie and I'm not too old to do something about it. Hahaha!
Amazing song, takes me back to a wonderful time! I graduated in 83. The 80s never left my soul, one song and its like a time machine! Love this song, i did this one on TT. Very underrated. Nik nailed it!!! ❤🤟🤟
I was 20 in 1984. This song is still one of my favourites! So many good memories of the 80's. The best songs in history in my lifetime so far! When I hear this song, it brings me right back to 1984. Absolutely love ❤️ it! ❤
I was 19….I so wish I could go back in time. This song helps ease the longing. We sure are lucky though to have lived then and to remember it aren’t we!
As I have gotten older ,I realize the metaphor in this piece of nostalgia. As the digital world became ever more pervasive, we were trading out soul- humanity . And here we are
When I was 18 I spent a week opening a small furniture store in Colorado. I was paid $400. I heard this song and went to a stereo store with this record and song, I bought a pair of Advent legacy II Speakers. for $400 ..sounded amazing with this song playing
Listen to this song. It's sung in a two person perspective. One person wants to live in a different person's shoes and the other person is telling them that they don't want to be in their shoes cause that person wants out of their own shoes.
I’m not sure if Nik could have possibly known how this song allowed me to feel my emotions as a teen being abused almost daily. Over 40 years later it still allows me to release emotions related to complex PTSD suffered throughout my life. The recent healing merges with the memory of those who bullied and abused me and allows me to remember that those days are no longer present. It reminds me that I can show my emotion in a safe place…..finally without repercussion. It reminds me of my growth. It allows me to revisit my pain and appreciate that someone felt as desperate and lonely as myself but never gave up and kept fighting. I love this song so much.

When this song opens up to the chorus, I’m transported back in time. This, among a few other ’80s songs, is why I learned guitar and songwriting. It’s one of the greats! Always makes me feel spiritually uplifted.
Haven’t heard this song since grade 1 or 2. Besides being emotional right now, this is a brilliant song, musically speaking. Amazing chord progressions. You can hear that craftsmanship of real musicians.

You don't know how bad I got it
You got it easy
You don't know when you've got it good
It's getting harder
Just keeping life and soul together

Even though I know I should
The cold is biting
Through each and every nerve and fiber
My broken spirit is frozen to the core

Wouldn't it be good to be on your side?

Wouldn't it be good if we could live without a care?
You must be joking
You don't know a thing about it
You've got no problem
I'd stay right there if I were you
I got it harder
You couldn't dream how hard I got it
Stay out of my shoes
If you know what's good for you
The heat is stifling
Burning me up from the inside
The sweat is coming through each and every pore
I don't wanna be here no more
I don't wanna be here no more
I don't wanna be here no more
Wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes
