We went on a "short" vacation trip with the FWD with new software, 360km each way with a total of 1300km done in one week. Consumption was a little below 200wh/km on german autobahn going at 130km/h where possible
Charing was fine, only 1 charge per trip with max. 143.6kW from the charger (DC set to "max"). It's not that bad after all. Next trip in november 900km in 3 days, looking forward to it!
How did it go? My in laws bought this car and I hope their experience will be good, as they plan to do a lot of road tripping across Europe.
@@TAD-9well he “not that bad” and that he was “looking forward” to a 900km trip. Seems to me it went alright.
We have done many trips until now, and charging was never a problem. Those 3.8 cycles are enough for us. Our FWD is more efficient than the AWD Björn tested, the trips from may and july the car consumed 186wh/km. I usually drove between 120 and 130km/h.
Some more trips to come: September 900km in two days, in october a vacation trip to austria with 650km one way with lower temperatures and in november 900km in 3 days. Getting my tow hitch in a few days, than we'll be able to carry the bikes and tow our small 750kg trailer.
Just got the USDM UPDATE!!
Hi Bjorn, @Bjorn Nyland.
you really should try the Lexus RZ 450e in a range and charging test.
I have one of these and I was surprised that even if it has the same platform it has the "OLD" software.
On a hypercharge, above 80% it charges with below 10kW, has still not any percentagefor the SoC on the cockpit and a poorer Range than the BZ4X.
Looking forward to your Review on the Lexus RZ450e - I tried to talk to Lexus directly if an update might come soon - they don't know.
You know that there is still at least 5% left in usable buffer after the car shows 0% and 0km.. so there was really no reason to worry in this case but it will be "good drama"... 😄 PS New car tests in Norway drove 40km beyond zero with an updated car... and the power is reduced in three stages so it happens very clearly and controlled (the last 5-10 km is turtle 🐢 mode) Then the car also has an unusable lower buffer of another few percent to protect the battery...
Hey Bjørn. What app is it you have on the phone with the green numbers...
There is one interesting thing about Toyota bz4x. It has recommended AC level for charging at 100% while the competitors are at 80%. For unplanned longer rides this would be serious advantage and mostly nullified the longer range of competitors. Still having original ioniq i cry how inefficient the new cars including Tesla are :( lucid seams to exception but at crazy price level
Is the software update available in the United States?
Yes & Canada I believe it's called PIP2. You'll know you have it when the state or charge % is on the HUD.
Little bit like Bud light, never touch that stuff.
Is this the AWD?
In the US it's like a gamble when you go up to a non-tesla charger. The upkeep is not as good as your country.
As many bandages Toyota put on the car they are limping their way just to meet the warranty expired date.
1000k test is going to be interesting.
“Caught with your pants down” syndrome feels like cheating. Bad for an EV. Great video!
What is the background for calling it Spekeröd x 3? 😂
Hes doing it because some dude said that hes pronounciation of spekeröd was wrong, so just to make a little fun of that guy. No harm done.
@@starvictory7079 You know this isn't a tourism channel, right?
@@starvictory7079hey man chill. I don’t care if the pronounciation is perfect. I just wanted to know the back story.
Newbie here. I was wondering if I could replace bz4x 12v auxiliary battery on my own. If I detach the 12v battery, can it damage the computer system on the car ?
How did you update for the new version??
Toyota clearly does not have their stuff sorted out. Thanks for the update.
Well...they have produced and sold more batteries in cars then everybody else (in hibrids).
They also helped tesla be born a decade ago... they are also brother company to panasonic, they main battery partner of tesla...
They probably known something about batteries and cars...
@@srantoniomatos A few facts: Toyota currently hardly produces any car batteries (only R&D). Toyota's batteries are mainly produced by companies such as Clarios, Exide, GS Yuasa and Panasonic.
In 2014, Toyota took a 2.5% share in Tesla (which it sold again 3 years later). Hardly a "helped Tesla to be born", since Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) took a 10% stake in Tesla at that same time.
Yes, Toyota once was a pioneer in the field of (hybrid) electric driving, but it is currently massively lagging behind competition.
My personal belief is that if Toyota continues on this path, it will simply no longer exist in 20 years. The first signs of this are already visible in Toyota's current largest markets (China and the US).
And it's not that I'm a Toyota basher. On the contrary, my first experience with electric driving was made possible by Toyota. With a Prius 2. A hideous car with a fantastic (hybrid) electric powertrain. I was sold
immediately and have only driven (full) electric ever since. No Toyota unfortunately, because they have only been doing a fully electric since last year. Reluctantly it seems.
@@srantoniomatos they dont. They are asking 55k for this car and it doesnt perform
@@ronalddolman2654Toyota is an enormous suc6 in the Usa, tgey are investing 15 billion Usd in 2 plants in the Usa for Bev's..... in Europe Toyota is a huge sakes suc6 as well. In China they lose ground to local manufacturers, this is the same for all European brands.
Chinese manufacturers are very much fundering by the Chinese authorities, the cars are as good ad European cars. So it is logica that Byd and Geely grow on their home market...and will be the biggest brands in China.
Toyota is biggest manufacturer in Japan, Vw in Germany and Stellantis and Renault in France, Fiat in Italy and Gm in the Usa....
Is there a version number to the software update?
Could you do a test of the Citroen/Peugeot/Opel/Toyota Van version. Just to show people how a bad EV accutally works. We have 10 off them and the consumption is crazy high 30kwh/100km in summer. In the winter they are around 50kwh/100km.
They have the heatpump. But the HVAC is stupid. Low heating is off, 16-max the heating is on full blast all the time (with the knobs, don't know how it works with the more expensive digital display). So you have to manaully adjust between Low and anything else while driving or you melt with over 30c in the cabin. It works a bit better in the summer when it cooling instead.
There is also the shitty infortainment with the worst sound ever. The one you got in the diesel version with buttons is miles better, it also beeps and scream for the most anyoing things.
It also shuts down after just a couple of minutes witch is just stupid for a Work van when you might be using it as an office.
btw 2 off them is down with broken inverter for AC charger with under 2000km the the odo. they don't even now when they might be able to get a new, half year or more they say.
Bjorn has done Citroen e-traveller range test, it’s pretty much the same as Van version, except heavier and lot more cabin to heat.
I have a Toyota Proace EV with 120k km done, if Bjorn wants to do a battery degradation test on it :D It’s pretty bad
@@n2utsu Does the heater control work in the one you have? Because it really dosen't matter how we have it set. Had a couple of longer drives. And even after a hour it never turns down the heat (the gauge is on just bellow max all the time). It's allways on full blast. Solved it with having the window open, but that just feels stupid. Every van we have is the same with a range of under 100km when temperture drops below freezing
@@Iceeeen Mine has dual-zone climate control, works as should. When I start driving cold car it heats it up quick and then stays at set temperature. Energy consumption for the climate is crazy high though. Needle is always just under max when heating is active and about 1/4 when cooling is active. Does not show actual heater power consumption. Pointless gauge.
@@n2utsu Ok, well dealer claims nothing is wrong. But they are aso terrible....
@@Iceeeen Yeah, mine just had OBC charger replaced second time. Car was under 2years old, but done over 110k so they denied warranty at first and said that it’s 6490€+work. I reminded them of EU law that all products sold here have minimal 2 years of warranty, regardless how much they have been used. Also clearly a defective part, but they said they never had anyone replace one. How come if mine was already on its second! They eventually agreed to do it under warranty😅. Also said that wait time is unknown as they have several on order, makes sense as ”never had anyone replace one”
Seems idiotic that these have OBC replacement as often as Ford has oil changes.
I also have (transmission)oil on undercover and a clunk when accelerating-decelerating but all good according to Toyota dealer. Last one I’m gonna buy from them.
Hello, my I know what OBD dongle you used with this BZ4X? I want to buy one to use with mine but need IOS compatible. Thanks
is it true that this car is being Recalled?
ToyotaBjørn. Time to get a hat.
Bjorn, you did not correctly measure the net capacity of the battery, when the dashboard shows 0% battery on CarScanner, you still had 7% real battery left. You should have added to the 57.7kwh the rest of the battery in the buffer, that is the net capacity
No, I did measure it correctly. I measure 100 to 0 % on car's display. Not what the car is hiding.
@@bjornnyland i agree, you measure what GOM tells you not the whole net battery :)
okay, got me interested, what kind of membership do you have with Ionity, I don't seem to find anything like that on their website or the app?
sponsorship😂😂😂😂
They are promising now 1.000.000km or 10 y and still have 70% SOH ????
Toyota Bz4x has good operability and excellent assisted driving, but its charging and battery life need to be improved. I bought the long battery life version of FAW Toyota and ran for 20,000 kilometers. What's the big problem? Slow charging is the biggest problem.
How do you compare it to Atto 3?
Can you review the Lexus Rz bev?
My dealership has not hit me up and the app says the car is up to date😢
It is 64 kw ! Just they still leave there like 30-40km buffor (missing 6kw in Your calculation Sir). Luckily You can use it as normal like driving without speed reduction etc. Please go below 0. You can reach Drammen some how (below 0).
Elbil24 they had checked it (before update). They were able to drive over 100km/h , many other cars can not.
And over 500km was for FWD on 18 inch wheels.
*kWh
How do you get the update? OTA or at Toyota service centers?
3.8 charging sessions before it basically locks u out of charging? Out of spec Reviews seen something similar. Really odd an EV will just lock out charging despite thermals being good.. hope they fix
Hi Bjørn
I think your maths is a bit off regarding the 57.7 figure, if you look at the volvo or the nissan in the table at the end, they have 17.5 to 22.5 extra Kwh, yet they only manage to achieve c40 KM more?
Math checks out fine, Toyota was more efficient in its run.
You are questioning Bjorn’s Aisian math ? He is the master.
Thanks for the video Bjorn. Kyle Connor from the usa just had another bz4x bash fest video yesterday on out of spec reviews . I told people you are the best and referred them to you.
@@markfitzpatrick6692 The USA AWD model Kyle Conner had is even worse than the European or USA FWD model because of the battey which is saying a lot, because the “better” model is still pretty crap. It deserves the criticism.
Wait, this is the smaller battery of them two ?
thank you!
The question is, do the wheels stay on?
So old at this stage
It’s strange that the car is not showing how many kw it’s getting so you need to check the charging station or the app provided by the charger. 🥵 even in the leaf you can monitor

Hmmm not for me better cars out there thx for the info. keep up the great work
How is the Toyota bz4x with new software to charge now when its cold. Is it good or poor? @Bjorn Nyland
I'd like to know the same thing
I dont get it. AWD battery is not capped at 100kw? Maybe it's different in Europe.
Right, they get the Panasonic battery even for AWD
@@stevenjones916 is US AWD batt LFP? I see people saying that based on its limitations, it seems it is. I know it is a CATL batt
Can you state your car’s specs?
Is there a 1000 mile test result list for all cars somwhere?
Bjorn has a spreadsheet linked in his descriptions
Ioniq 28kWh destroys this. The only thing this is better at than a 2016 Hyundai is looking odd.
Yeah but is it fair comparing The Legend, the "Poor man's Tesla" to a Toyota? ;)
@@szalaigabor1714 You are right, it should be compared to Hyundai/KIA's first EV, the SoulEV 27kWh. That was 10 years ago. My wife has one of those, but the later 30kWh version. It is now around 6 years old, still under warranty. We payed 27k€, that's 1/2 of this Toyota. Except for the auto stearing it is almost as capable and for the price of a Bz4x you can get Model Y these days... bruh!
With those charging speeds I feel really sorry for all the taxi drivers who have made the mistake of getting this car. And it’s not even that comfy for the passengers, when the floor is so high on the backseats.
cope
Bjorn, do you ever sleep?
I sleep when the office rats are at work.
So now its destroying the battery for short term results with Bjorn....
Not at all. The C-rating here is nothing compared to other cars.
@@bjornnyland I meant by removing the battery buffer.
Can we be 100% sure the battery is 71.4 kwh?
ev-database.org/car/1565/Toyota-bZ4X-AWD
Now charging fast..before was slow...whay?
Software update
I’m looking to get one but I heard the full range is 140 not 255 as advertised anyone know if this is true ?
I was looking forward to see over 400KM range increase with this update...very disappointing...I own Subaru Solterra in Canada and battery size is 72.6 KWH and I am currently getting 265KM range with AC or Heat off..
Here in UK my Solterra Touring model with 20 inch allows when fully charged shows 220 miles or 354 kilometres . I am still waiting for the upgrade.
265 5hat seems low my Bz4x xle AWD shows 367 kms on a full charge with heat off and around 330 with heat on
❤❤❤
If only this battery came to usa
Don't buy this one, the fast charge time is more than 5hrs
Toyota bZ4X needs new 100kWh battery A.S.A.P
Better but not good is what i got from that .
Oh god It's not even capable of pulling 300kms??? This is SOOO lame. WTF Toyota?
Edit: Just realized the battery is too small... still lame. Is there a bigger battery option?
Nope, you get this and nothing else.
it's their first full e car, they could increase size in future models
Thomas Frank Martin Laura Robinson Sandra
Thumb nail looks like the car has been crashed.
Here in Asia we get 71kWh battery pack 🔋 damn…. Yours is really shitty in terms of range packs
They lied, and then they try to cover up their lie and fix it, and then they only half succeeded. How do they expect us to buy a car from them?
They should make the option to buffer the battery for better battery health as a toggle switch.
I mean, why not be honest with us and say we made mistake, we tried to keep the battery health but it hurts the range too much, so now are fixing it with a software update.
If my Ioniq 5 pulls less than 150kw on a dc charger I get annoyed. The bz4x is quite possibly the worst of the new evs from a major auto maker. That car is a mess.
torasha
..you re so cute...😘
What an awful EV!!! Not good Toyota!!!!!!!
Most crossovers are...
That’s just direct competition that was also tested in the summer lol and the ID.4 and Model Y still are more efficient. They also have more range and charge more range faster, while also having more power than the bZ4X, they’ve also been out for years.
The bZ4X has been out about only a year or so and is already significantly behind these EVs from other companies that have had their EVs out for years. A pathetic attempt by a company at the size of Toyota there’s no other way to put it.
@@nothere572 Who in their right mind is going to buy this???
@@nothere572 pathetic companies are ev only companies, tesla can't make cybertruck and their full size truck is a joke, others are even worse, Toyota didn't want to make super advanced car as their first EV, that's right desicion
What a lot of these reviewers don't understand is the technology in the battery and why Toyota limits charging speed. Why do people buy Toyota's again....for their reliability and longevity. Bz4x has the LTO battery technology that are more expensive and has a longer life expectancy than other lithium battery technology. However, LTO batteries charges slower as well. So Toyota being Toyota, they will go with the technology that will last longer for their customers vs giving them the faster charging battery and cheaper as well
