I had a recent opportunity to acquire an M-65 power amp with a C-65 pre and this review decided it for me. They integrate brilliantly with my Yamaha NS1000Ms loudspeakers which is probably to be expected given they're contemporaneous designs. Totally agree with your opinion on the "Yamaha sound".
These are the real reviews, not those puffed up infomercials on the latest gear we get from some youtubers here. It also shows there is no reason to snub vintage gear. The good stuff of yesteryear can stand its ground.
Dreadful review this guy really has no idea ! He explained nothing correctly ! Obviously lives in a world of his own. Both units are excellent quality but he described them soo inaccurately.
I’m an absolute Yamaha fanatic. My second system is a Yamaha C-85, 2 M-65’s, CDX-1100, K-1020 and a GE-60 equalizer I don’t actually use. I absolutely love the system. They sound incredible, especially if you have all the related components together. I run it with ADS L880/2’s and it rocks for sure.
Those 105's are a really good pairing with that M65 in my opinion. A bit rolled off at the top and a little bit hungry. I have enjoyed some 104/2's with a Yamaha P2200 and a Yamaha C4 pre. Don't underestimate that C50. While not the best in the line the phono section stands up to the test of time. Yamaha gear seems to marry nicely with its own family members.
Yamaha always made highly regarded gear. I’m older and I have to say after the beauty of the ‘70s and their backlit analog tuner dials, I found early 80s black chassis and red digital readouts to be a bit ugly. Just my opinion, don’t expect it to be shared. Just like the cars of the period, square boxes.
I live with a powerful system in a small room. Biggest problem is standing waves and I have to have the speakers .5 m from the wall. But I've got to have me fast controlled beaucoup bass :)
I got the M65 set with the C65 preamp driven on a pair AR Acoustic Research SRT380 Studio Recording Transducer speakers with the 15" inch woofers, and the sound quality is just stunning! Never gonna sell the hole systeem it's build to last and 2 years ago i had them professional cleaned by a local vintage audio store costed a little buck but it was worth it, sinds than the set sounded even better than before! If you can get your hands on a M60/M65 or the M80/M85 or even the top line MX1000 than your settled and really good to go for a very long time! Just give it some care and use it wisely. 👊👏
I was lookinh for a pair myself. Question do these have the high current to really drive a pair of martin logan aerious? Or even a pair of carver Amazing?
I bought the C50 & M50 pre & power new in 1980, it was shipped over for me from Japan via a HiFi retailer in Bolton UK as I was one of the first to buy in the UK, had it for 30yrs with no issues until the power amp failed (even was recalled by Yamaha near the end of its life to fix a fault for free that caused some to fail in Germany apparently) how's that for service !!! sold the pre amp & now have a Arcam FMJ A20 and love it.
I sold these during my HiFi retail days. They were considered better sound and build quality kit than 80's JVC, Mitsubishi and Kenwood. However I wholeheartedly agree with the show's host whereas the C80 pre amp is ho hum compared to all the M series Yamaha amplifiers. Never liked the "veiled" sound of Yamaha C40/C60/C70/C80 preamps. I personally use integrated amp and receiver PreOuts as preamps as definitely sonic preferable.
Please review the Kenwood Basic C1 preamp and the Kenwood Basic M1 amp, preferably together if possible. I have heard through audio circles that the clarity and sound was simply amazing. Some folks argue that it is possibly the best kenwood ever made. Cheers, enjoy your show!
Equipment from late sixties and seventies was so good because there was market for it, people wanted good stereo for life to listen to their favorite music. So companies, often founded by real passionates, competed to make best stuff. And the result was quality. Built, looks, sound. In the end of seventies the market got saturated with great products that were not cheap. They tried to make something cheaper and more "modern" looking at the same time to make it more marketable. The result was diodes, plastic, black paint, integrated electronics, thinner board tracks and worse sound. The founders were getting old, and their heirs just did not feel it that way. Thanks God we have a lot of great products from that era still in very good working order ready to be had, cheap.
I’ve got an M-80 and C-80. My wife calls it old junk and tried to get me to throw them away. I told her, I’m always respectful, but you should just shut up now. 😂
Not an expert, but I'd check that 80-ies era amps don't sound like casette players in tonality (which would be irritating, even if it is kind of lively, I think my car also sounds a bit like that, which didn't bother me before, but now I don't like it too much). The point is that these amps were released when predominant was the casette format and maybe had provisions for it. Certainly there would be good exceptions. Probably getting out of the casette sound helped Technics distinguish themselves for a while. They were also good with turntables, so it makes sense. Have to hear what Yamaha were doing in these years, it would be interesting.
I've got two of the Yamaha M60 power amps (both are sadly in "protect mode" currently). I always felt like the C60 preamplifier I had was holding the amp back, but never had anything else to compare it to.
There is always the unique Yamaha sound and its perfect balance of natural sound, if you have speakers the likes of NS-1000 then you realize and appreciate the true meaning of Yamaha sound. Nice review btw.

Another great review this one is interesting as when new the price point of this amp you were into the next level of "true" audiophile equipment rather than hi end technics,yamaha rotel stuff so the reason people bought these is for watts rms and good sound. Just maybe they could have got better sound moving up a level and down a few decibels as not many of us have rooms or speakers to fully exploit this much power
I love vintage gear and a lot of it is Yamaha. Most of my gear is in a climate control storage. I acquired most of it by hitting 10 different thrifts a day from 2008 until 2018. My latest Yamaha finds were last year, which consisted of a DSP Z9 and a DSP A1. I always wanted a pair of the Kef 105's you have. The only Kefs I've managed to find were 2 pair of 103.2's and a pair of 104/2's. I absolutely love them. If their are vintage Gods, i can say I've been absolutely blessed to find the rarest and best from all of the manufacturers. Thanks for sharing the vid!
Nick S, I’m a big fan of Musical Fidelity gear and the A1 was a classic. However, dealers will tell you the hot running, due to it being class A, caused regular failures, particularly volume controls. You should also budget for a full recap, given its age and that heat, both of which will dry out those electrolytics.
After a day of being run off the road and made fun of by people on actual motorcycles it's nice to come home to a solid hifi and a little ska to uplift the spirit.

I recently purchased it off Ebay and it had the cord ends cut off so I opened it up to make sure it was clear of debris and to clean it. Nice review. I have been toying with the idea of getting into vintage gear. Don't know if it a rabbit hole I want to go down. Mainly for financial reasons. I am worried that whatever amp I go for will end up anchor in a few months. Also, there is the issue justifying it when I have perfectly good modern gear I am happy with. Maybe someday. I do find vintage gear interesting so I will keep watching your videos.
Great review! If the component is more than 20 yrs old, you may want to test/replace the electrolytic caps. They do dry out. Modern high-quality caps will set you back a bit of cash. But it may breath much life into components, like the c50 you didn't like.
I’ve got these pre amp with a set of nad 2200pe amplifiers which are honest to stay are in another league to that Yamaha power amplifier. Not to say that is a bad amp. Amazing but nad did it just that little bit better
I got the same power amp with NAD1155 preamp and the sound is magical.Get some RCA's from Audio Envy.Audio Envy Prestige RCA's.You will be blown away.Yes they are bit pricey,but trust me they are better than £1000 or even maybe £3000 RCA cable.
Good review but not many speakers really need all that brute power these days but I'm sure the Dahlquist dq-10 speakers would sing with that kind of power. If you've never heard the Dahlquist dq-10s then you need to put that on your bucket list.
@@stereoreviewx Kelvin, yes they do somewhat resemble an electrostatic but they are in fact an open baffle design cone speaker. They have a 12 inch woofer but strangely they made a subwoofer to go along with them. I don't think many people bought the sub to go with them though. They needed a lot of power to reach their full potential. A coworker of mine had a pair 40 something years ago and on Friday nights I would take my albums over to his place to listen to them. Great memories.
@@Cartier_specialist They like power and they really like a matched pair of decent powered subs as stands. They share the same woofer as what came to be known as the original Large Advent loudspeaker. So not quite a twelve inch woofer. The DQ-10 is one of the best examples of a sum being greater than the parts in the history of loudspeakers. Absolutely bucket list if you have enough space to let them breathe a bit.
I enjoyed your honest review and your are correct about, the less, the better the sound quality. The preamp ' s main feature is the selective phono input sensetivity. Great for having a low end MC cartridge. Eli- mates the need for an external phono preamp. The main advantage of the power amp is the selection of 2 - 4 - 8 ohm output. For those who want to fiddle about with different speakers. Take care and keep up the great work.
You hi-fi people sure spew some irrational crap. You reckon you can hear differences in cables, but not on UA-cam. No wonder engineers think you're nuts...because you are.
Remember to listen to speaker demos through headphones, as otherwise the result quite blurred (2 pairs of amp, speaker and room acoustics stack on top of each other). At least this is my experience.
Nice review! I think the so called vintage sound we get from older gear can many times come from aging capacitors etc. The values of different components starts to drift and it affects the sound. I'm not saying that's the case here with this preamp, but it could be. Which is why brands like Naim lets you send in the old gear to replace parts and makes it sound brand new again.
Hi , Kevin love your channel. I used to be a headphone student . Now I got a job for two years. Recently I went to hifi store and immediately realized I can't afford new gear that I like . So i search my family for gear that is not using , now i have two systems. One is naim nait2 + linn tukan+luxman da-100 sounds great even metal music (so many people say british gear isn’t good at that) . Two is technics su-v10 amp / magnat all ribbon 6 and akai sw-155 speakers / audiolab 8000CDE . The system sounds great but it can’t handle metal music.When double drum bass and bass notes hit ,the guitar riff and vocals are not so lively,even number two has more bass and big scale ,Yes classical and pop music is better than number one . My question is should I Upgrade number two systems speaker to bigger one or find a subwoofer for number one system. sorry for my broken english,i’m taiwanese Thx
Well I’m a bit of a purist I don’t much like the subwoofer it being a different colour and a different sound and only one speaker usually you have a good high-fi family with all those donations you are very lucky K
Linn and Exposure power amps of comparable power output of the era will walk all over it when it comes to pace, rhythm and timing - especially when it comes to 1980s era Judas Priest. The only saving grace of the Yamaha is having a lower price while offering reasonable neutrality and musicality but heavy metal music fans favoring razor edged timing should look elsewhere.
I sold Yamaha gear in the mid 80's. Always liked the elegant, understated style.. just a bit classier than its competition.

Wow this was so cool because I have the m 80 amp 250 watts that I bought in 1986 powering a pair of klipsch corner horns that are still rocking

Well, my Sony TA-2000F pre amp is loaded with knobs and parts and I love it. Why get a pre if it ain't got knobs?

This is the point…not many brands are capable of building really good preamps…it’s apparently much harder than building good power amps

Almost 200wpc 170wpc on paper i have mine letting checked last year and it produced 195wpc @ 8ohm
I’ve got a pair of Gale 401’s.. I’ve been told they can handle 2ohms so would love to try that amp out, hope I come across one!

I have been toying with the idea of getting into vintage gear. Don't know if it a rabbit hole I want to go down. Mainly for financial reasons. I am worried that whatever amp I go for will end up anchor in a few months. Also, there is the issue justifying it when I have perfectly good modern gear I am happy with. Maybe someday.
I do find vintage gear interesting so I will keep watching your videos.

If the component is more than 20 yrs old, you may want to test/replace the electrolytic caps. They do dry out. Modern high-quality caps will set you back a bit of cash. But it may breath much life into components, like the c50 you didn't like.

I’ve got these pre amp with a set of nad 2200pe amplifiers which are honest to stay are in another league to that Yamaha power amplifier. Not to say that is a bad amp. Amazing but nad did it just that little bit better

I got the same power amp with NAD1155 preamp and the sound is magical.Get some RCA's from Audio Envy.Audio Envy Prestige RCA's.You will be blown away.Yes they are bit pricey,but trust me they are better than £1000 or even maybe £3000 RCA cable.
The level controls are on the input not the output as far as I know.

Good review but not many speakers really need all that brute power these days but I'm sure the Dahlquist dq-10 speakers would sing with that kind of power. If you've never heard the Dahlquist dq-10s then you need to put that on your bucket list.

@@stereoreviewx Kelvin, yes they do somewhat resemble an electrostatic but they are in fact an open baffle design cone speaker. They have a 12 inch woofer but strangely they made a subwoofer to go along with them. I don't think many people bought the sub to go with them though. They needed a lot of power to reach their full potential. A coworker of mine had a pair 40 something years ago and on Friday nights I would take my albums over to his place to listen to them. Great memories.
@@Cartier_specialist They like power and they really like a matched pair of decent powered subs as stands. They share the same woofer as what came to be known as the original Large Advent loudspeaker. So not quite a twelve inch woofer. The DQ-10 is one of the best examples of a sum being greater than the parts in the history of loudspeakers. Absolutely bucket list if you have enough space to let them breathe a bit.

I enjoyed your honest review and your are correct about, the less, the better the sound quality. The preamp ' s main feature is the selective phono input sensetivity. Great for having a low end MC cartridge. Eli- mates the need for an external phono preamp. The main advantage of the power amp is the selection of 2 - 4 - 8 ohm output. For those who want to fiddle about with different speakers. Take care and keep up the great work.

How can you demo a sound through the UA-cam format ? ... it would be pointless .
You hi-fi people sure spew some irrational crap. You reckon you can hear differences in cables, but not on UA-cam. No wonder engineers think you're nuts...because you are.
Remember to listen to speaker demos through headphones, as otherwise the result quite blurred (2 pairs of amp, speaker and room acoustics stack on top of each other). At least this is my experience.
@@zweer13 If you do that your listening to the headphones !!! ... the only way to listen to speakers is to listen to the speakers !

Nice review! I think the so called vintage sound we get from older gear can many times come from aging capacitors etc.
The values of different components starts to drift and it affects the sound. I'm not saying that's the case here with this preamp, but it could be.
Which is why brands like Naim lets you send in the old gear to replace parts and makes it sound brand new again.
Hi , Kevin love your channel. I used to be a headphone student . Now I got a job for two years. Recently I went to hifi store and immediately realized I can't afford new gear that I like .
So i search my family for gear that is not using , now i have two systems.
One is naim nait2 + linn tukan+luxman da-100 sounds great even metal music (so many people say british gear isn’t good at that) .
Two is technics su-v10 amp / magnat all ribbon 6 and akai sw-155 speakers / audiolab 8000CDE . The system sounds great but it can’t handle metal music.When double drum bass and bass notes hit ,the guitar riff and vocals are not so lively,even number two has more bass and big scale ,Yes classical and pop music is better than number one .
My question is should I Upgrade number two systems speaker to bigger one or find a subwoofer for number one system.

Well I’m a bit of a purist I don’t much like the subwoofer it being a different colour and a different sound and only one speaker usually

Linn and Exposure power amps of comparable power output of the era will walk all over it when it comes to pace, rhythm and timing - especially when it comes to 1980s era Judas Priest. The only saving grace of the Yamaha is having a lower price while offering reasonable neutrality and musicality but heavy metal music fans favoring razor edged timing should look elsewhere.
