Renegade 3 was the first time I got horribly let down by a sequel - a dismal attempt, exacerbated by the brilliance of the first 2. I remember even as a kid just sitting on my bedroom floor in absolute disbelief at how much they'd f**ked it up and how I wish I'd asked my mum for something else instead that day 😭

To be fair to the CPC, for the amount of screen RAM it needed to push around, it could've done with a Z80 running at about 6MHz.
I've a lot of time for the CPC as someone who has a C64, but without the custom support hardware that came in the Plus series far too late, it was always destined to struggle with a certain amount of motion.

Chase HQ 2 was particularly naughty, on the Speccy at least. The reviews claimed it was good! Quick cash in by Ocean, no doubt.

All they had to do was get the original coders to update the engine from the first game. It was madness!

The speech made C64 Beach Head II for myself, since it was missing on the A8, that version had little appeal.

Funny you say Duckula has graphics like a 5 year old - I was thinking they actually looked like the Speccy UDGs I was drawing aged ten!

Count Duckula 2 was the first thing that came in to my head when I saw this video title, so I was not at all surprised to see it featured. I still can't believe that someone thought it was acceptable to release that pile of steaming dog turd to the general public.

I bought yie ar 2 for the spectrum, took it to a friend's house, we loaded it, they fell about in hysterics at it, what a waste of cash

Ocean "First game was good, better ensure we match that". 6 weeks later "Just shove this crap out"

Unironically, i did like beach head 2 more than 1, just due to the two player mode and having a struggle in it with my brothers.

Beach-Head II is great fun! The speech is legendary! Medic! Hey, you can't hurt me! I'm hit! Aaarararagghghg!!!!!!
Perhaps a bit slow and methodical but a very polished game with a nice bit of variety. More random than the original: yes. And the title screen seemed like a Blue Thunder cash-in 😅

Fairlight 2 on speccy was a disappointing buggy mess, apparently the coder didn't get paid for the (groundbreaking and awesome) first one so deliberately screwed up the sequel he was contracted to write by messing up the map layout and making the final screen impossible to complete. Strider 2, fighting warrior and human killing machine are on the list as well.
I quite liked c64 space harrier, it was rough but had speed, playability and great music even if he looked like he was riding a unicycle at times.
Beach head 2 had one good feature on the c64, awesome sampled screams when the soldiers died.

I wouldn't get too excited. Instead of proper preparation what I seem to have recorded is 30 minutes of rambling crap with no notes about the 464!

Space Harrier II was a launch title for the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988, and an absolute bloody letdown on that too. Was recently reprogrammed by M2 and added as a bonus on the the Mega Drive Mini II (along with a new MD version of the original) using "enhanced" emulation of a theoretic alternate universe upgraded Mega Drive that they called "Sega Mark V", and even that version is still shit.

To be fair, Chase HQ2 om the C64 was an absolute miracle compared to the first.

I wonder what beef was had or lack of QA at Elite allowed Keith Burkhill's name to be proudly proclaimed as programmer of the Speccy version throughout Space Harrier. Proud of his coding prowess or concerned about payment? (PS: No Renegade III?) ;-)

    • @chinnyvision

It is so prominent that it makes you think it's coded in such a way it wouldn't be trivial to remove.

@@chinnyvision Totally obscure reference but it reminds me of when Michael Buerk used to audibly bang his pen on the desk before reading the news. Either no producer or director in the gallery ever noticed (impossible as he did it all the time) or he had some sort of malevolent hold over them and they were too scared to ask him to stop. Search any Michael Buerk BBC news video from 1999 onwards and watch the glee in his eye as he's gotten away with it yet again.

Space Harrier II was an odd one (much like US Gold's Strider 2), there is a separate but unrelated Mega Drive game called Space Harrier II.
Probe developed the home versions of Chase HQ II (Special Criminal Investigations) -on the C64 it's very good, being on cartridge is a real advantage. The only caveat is don't play with an autofire joystick, it ruins the difficulty.
Beach Head II is great fun on the C64 but a big multiload. I like the two-player aspects of the various games.
Count Duckula 2 is a travesty.
Not a fan of YAKF2 - inferior to the original. You kill the dwarves to earn extra tea leaves, so you can brew up some refreshing tea to regain energy between levels.

Deserves points for trying but unfortunately it was flawed and bugged, though there are fixed versions available now It really should have had a save feature or at least let you restart from the sanctuaries. Still the music was very atmospheric and to me the game felt like an epic journey into the unknown. Talking C64 version here BTW.

As u say chase hq 2 on speccy and amstrad all ocean should of done was given the original devs and let them do there magic again. I'm sure then both would have been brilliant and sold way better than the turd that ice churned up

    • @robsmall6466
      @robsmall6466 8 місяців тому +1

We don't know about Chase HQ 2 on Amstrad yet. It's incredibly rare and only a very few people have played it. It was a GX4000 cartridge release

  • @robsmall6466

I didn't mind Space Harrier 2 on Amstrad. My disappointment was with Bombjack 2 on Amstrad. Just couldn't connect with it

    • @chinnyvision

Oh I loved Bombjack 2 on the CPC. It isn't proper Bombjack but that didn't matter.

Exactly what I expected : cheap ass Spectrum conversions for the Amstrad that makes it funny that the prequel on the same machine is actually a good programmed game. Poor Amstrad owners. :D
( I had a second hand Atari 800XL back then. Almost no conversions coming out for that superior machine at that time. No crappy ones neither)

Sewer 😅 have you been in one lately.
No Chinny it is a cave.
Personally I'd say the only real disappointment is Count Duckula 2. I think you are being a bit harsh on the other games.
Space Harrier 2 wasn't really a good game to start with, I mean trying to do a SEGA super scaler on even a 16 bit system was a challenge, it wasn't until the 32x and Saturn that you got a near perfect arcade port of the first Space Harrier. (The music helped make that game be great)
Commodore 64 did get the best sequels out of those systems. Definitely agree on that one.
    The video was interesting.

Would you say C64 Space Harrier II is more competently done than Chris Butler's improved American version of the original Space Harrier on the C64?

    • @chinnyvision
      @chinnyvision  8 місяців тому +2

Hmm, I didn't think much of the 'improved' Space Harrier 1. Rather like trying to polish a turd.

Mind you I look back on the 1980s and I played any old rubbish to fair.
