    Thanks Chadi, pretty interesting content....Many years ago, I built my own grappling dummy. I used to store it inside a big black plastic bag to keep it clean. One day my new girlfriend opened the wardrobe door and the heavy parcel fell on her. She yelled at me thinking there was a corpse inside the bag 🤣

    Wrestling (at least Greco-Roman) have used dummies since I don't know when. A few times we practiced with them in Judo, but the had the flaw of not having two legs, and you had to dress it up with a gi. But I would like to add that whatever atemi they were training 150 years ago, the art shouldn't go for a point karate style of striking.
    Hitting the sensitive spots on a moving or resisting opponent isn't always that easy. Especially solar plexus is tough, but also the groin and the temple. You don't master that just through kata-style training. It's a matter of finding the opportunity when it's given to you. Sparring/randori is necessary.

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 2 роки тому +5

      Everything you said is absolutely true. I'd like to point out, though, that a Judoka training in kata or point-oriented Karate/Kempo has the advantage that his Judo randori has given him a realistic sense of distance/timing/angling to enable him to better apply strikes than someone training in the Karate alone, as well as grappling methods to better open up his opponent for his strikes that might not be options for the average Karateka. In other words, Judo training gives the student an understanding of movement and spacial awareness not enjoyed by most Karate only students and he won't make the same mistaken assumptions they do.

    Yes, good stuff! For me a standing dummy with torso, arms, and legs that works for uchi komi, strikes, and the type of tachi katame waza utilized in traditional jujutsu and other open-hand arts would be awesome. I picture such a dummy with articulating main joints (including at the hips and lower-mid-spine), suspended both at the ground and overhead with strong elastic/bungee cords (to keep the dummy upright, allow it to be drawn into position for uchi komi, and to induce some degree of postural kuzushi in the dummy when applying an off-balancing technique). In the meantime, I'm working on something less ambitious that lets me train key some of the above.

    Awsome video. I use a ground work dummy on a regular basis. Whenni get time I will build a standing dummy, in the meantime I'll use the tree in my back garden. Totally agree bands are amazing but don't have the same resistance. If it wanst for these kinds of training aids I'd be lost, I work 40hr week, married with kids. If I get to either judo or bjj once a week I've won.

    Very cool! I do HEMA and practice some of the grappling techniques. I have a dummy attached to a pole in the backyard with a sword in its hands and articulating arms and shoulders. I can't actually throw as it's tied to a pole, but a lot of the grappling in sword is done at the arms so it works quite well.

    Chadadi , I love what you do . As a small Judo student who tried it the early 197O's I discovered weight and size matters. I was looking for self defense system. Thank you , I guess sports rule !.

    • @DrMathOfficial
      @DrMathOfficial Рік тому

      Weight and size does matter ..but not more than all of the MANY other attributes. Size and weight are JUST another 2 of the many attributes. And SKILL, TECHNIQUE are 2 that can easily overcome size, height and weight. Speed and power are others. Timing, is another. Strategy is another. Strategy plus Stamina and conditioning (so you can just withstand all of their strikes or attacks, or you can just tire them out/ outlast them), is another. Athleticism and coordination is another. This list goes on and on. And you can even more easily overcome size, height or weight if you're VERY exceptional in other attributes, and even more so if you're exceptional in MULTIPLE other attributes.
      So again, size, height and weight, are JUST 3 of the numerous attributes that matter. ALL attributes can be overcame/ defeated, without high enough level of one or some of the other attributes.
      Good luck and God bless.

    As a person who practices karate, I have a dummy myself, those eastern European ones are the best! Leather -simulates skin so if you got sweaty hand makes you really think of your grips on the arms and heavy 30KG of dead weight means its not just going to give you the throw just on brute strength placement of hips and timing are also necessary. I think the dummy is essential for any martial artist. Its not as good as a human partner, but it damn well beats nothing.
