In themiddle of the street fighting for Cologne, US troops were facing not only German soldiers but also Volkssturm militia.The Volkssturm "uniform" was only a black armband with words Deutscher Volkssturm Wehrmacht with a series of silver collar pips pinned to the wearer's collar derived from the rank insignia of the various paramilitary organizations of the Nazi Party, which had control over them, and not of the regular Wehrmacht.

@TheSkinjob America wasn't in the war not because they were cowards but because they just simply werent in the war and had no reason to be, untill the japanese attacked pearl harbor that is. They did send equipement and what not too europe before they joined, Took down the japanese and helped defeating the germans when they did join. I'm not american but you cant say 'america didn't win shit'.
