  • It's been a few years since we've gotten the Omlet Eglu coop and we have had a very positive experience with it so far! However, we wanted to use the Omlet for a while before making an objective review.
In this video, we'll provide a few advantages of the Omlet Eglu coop over other coops, but also a few areas where we'd like Omlet to make some improvements. We hope this review will help you decide whether to get an Omlet coop or an alternative coops--but more importantly, help you see it's not hard to get started raising chickens in your backyard!

This is probably the best video on this I’ve seen. I’m definitely getting an Omlet, but keeping these alterations you made in mind

Great review. I have one, and am considering buying another. So easy to clean!. I would buy an add-on for a smaller mesh in a heartbeat. We haven't had trouble with rodents so far, but I think that was just luck.

Great review! Maybe it had an effect on the company as they've introduced a new large model that addresses some of your concerns. Just goes to show what happens when informed consumers hold these companies' feet to the fire. This now puts the Eglu at the top of my list (so far) in my preparation to purchase chickens next Spring.
Also, I had not thought about the hole spacing of the wire enclosure. Here in Germany mice-r-us! Hardwire cloth would be mandatory. I used it on my diy coop when I was living in the American south, where the biggest concern was snakes, and it worked very well.
Again, many thanks, and keep us updated.

@@practicalorganicliving how do you think the Cube size would do for 4 regular size chickens (olive egger, copper maran size) and 4 bantam (silkie) ? I consider the silkies half chickens :D or would you recommend the largest size still

I ask about hardware cloth on their fb ads and they censor my posts. Lol. Glad someone shared this. I just assume, make my own coop if I need to spend an additonal $150 on hardware cloth and take the time to install.

Yeah my thoughts exactly on the run. I'll build a frame for the hardware cloth. Glad I saw this before buying one. I'll purchase a coop and free range them in the yard. A weasel got into the barn so I'm going to try one of these coops. The cost of wood here lately would blow your mind. Lots of predators at night, and it gets real hot and real cold here in Nova Scotia 😆

Our 5 layers share the nesting box just fine. Sometimes there are 2 in the box at one time. They take turns.
We let them run free in our back yard, and they march up their ladder every evening, and the automatic door magically closes. Agreed ... changing the batteries is fiddly. Solar power option, please, that can be added to the existing controller.

    This was helpful! Thank you.
I am in the process of putting together my Omlet coop (Eglu) and run.
Currently am installing the automatic door. My issue with the battteries (not even having used the door yet) is batteries are terrible for our environment.
I was hoping to use rechargeable batteries, but per the company, rechargeable batteries are "not powerful enough".

    • @practicalorganicliving

    • @practicalorganicliving

We just dump the mixed chicken poop and shredded paper by our fruit trees or raised beds. The soil biology and worms turn the waste into dirt very quickly, especially if you water it consistently!

I have the Eglu Cube with Autodoor myself. I think there might something wrong with you control unit. I use standard supermarket-brand-batteries and after 6 months of use, they’re still at 90%. The unit is set to light control since the start. Batterie changes every 3 months seems way too much.

    • @practicalorganicliving
      @practicalorganicliving  7 місяців тому +1

The hens definitely drop litter in the run during the day but since we have a lot of brown material like fine wood mulch, the materials mix and decompose. There is no odor!
