Kasser Synths Arcade YM2151 overview + Strymon NightSky

- Here's an overview of the Kasser Synths Arcade YM2151, the successor of the "Genesis YM3438" DIY synth with vastly superior sound quality and 8 voices of polyphony AND multitimbrality (see table of contents below). This synth is based on the Yamaha 2151 integrated FM soundchip which was used in early 90s arcade cabinets (hence the name).
In this video, I take a brief look at the synth's features, create an evolving pad sound, pair it with a Strymon Nightsky pedal and last but not least create a short demo track making use of the machine's multitimbratility and polyphony.
Table of contents:
00:00 hello
00:43 hardware overview
02:48 loading and playing some sounds from sd card
03:04 creating an evolving pad sound: choosing an algorithm
03:39 velocity sensitivity on/off
03:51 setting up amplitude envelopes
05:20 lfo setup
06:12 saving the sound to sd card
06:30 adding superawesome reverb with nightsky
10:22 reverb demo (continued)
11:01 multitimbral demo track using an external sequencer
13:08 conclusion

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)
BTW, at the same time this video was released also a new DIY version of the DAFM synth ARCADE YM2151 was launched. Check here:

Love how the YM chip is visible
Great review, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Love all your videos you are an asset to the music community!
Oh, thank you very much! :)
Pretty neat little synth! The multitimbrality makes it very interesting, that's not something too many synths have.
Also: Nice demo track again, Floyd!
Thanks! I agree, the 8 part multitimbral ability is quite unique.
Not only is the Kasser Synth awesome, but the Nightsky seems to make *everything* sound better, which definitely a re-accruing theme with Strymon pedals. Love it.
Couldn't agree more! Strymon have a secret formular somewhere. In the literal meaning. :)
I was just looking at this earlier. It's a sign to buy one
Thanks for watching! Perhaps it is. ;-)
Hi Floyd - really nice piece you put together. Looks like a great piece of kit. Multi-timbral-ness (is that a word?) doesn't feature much on today's synths. I bought the Yamaha SY77 back in the day. 16-part multi-timbral. Yum! :-)
Thanks for watching! You're right, multitimbrality (and generous polyphony) seems to be a thing of the 90s. As long as people keep buying "desk hooters", that won't change. :)
@@mr_floydst I think the popularity of software synths has made them less necessary. Back in the day I recorded entire pieces on the one synth :-)
Hey Floyd! Which of their models gets the dirtiest sound? Thanks for demoing these!
Hi, thanks for watching - the GENESIS YM2612 will give you the original "Mega Drive" sound, including the (in)famous "ladder effect".
If we look how differently yamaha dx7 and yamaha dx7s sound, that is because of the implemented 12bit or 16bit converters, this will generate two groups of fans. I like yamaha dx7 sounds more, though more primitive, slightly infantile but bring warmth and a tad of dirt into sounds, and most importantly resemble exactly the sounds of arcade cabinets. From your experience, this ARCADE YM2151 chip gives those primitive sounds or rather those more polished ones (16bit conv)? If you ever wondered what I mean here is an example of both at 7.30

Hi! Oh, another video by Woody. :-)
That being said, Woody didn't use the same presets in that video, he compared factory presets that are slightly different on each machine.
To answer you question: The "Arcade" is more Hi-Fi than the "DAFM" (which had the SEGA Genesis chip). But it's significantly less "Hi-Fi" than e.g. a Reface DX. You'll still hear the A/D converter can not really smoothly fade away from "really low volume" to silence, for example, and the available microintervals (e.g. LFO strength or finetuning) is rather limited compared to more modern instruments. What you get is a very video-gamey sound, but one of the high-ends in that field.
Why aren’t you making videos with the DAFM Arcade anymore? You seem to favour the Reface DX. I’d love to know why.
Thanks for watching! Well, I'm trying to make the videos that get the most views. There's a bigger fanbase of the DX. :-)
But yeah, I could include it in a piece of music maybe. It's been collecting dust for too long. You'll see it in an upcoming video, then.
Isn't this fm synthesis I dont really know too much about it
Thanks for watching! Yes, it's an FM synth. It can play 8 notes and 8 different sounds at the same time (which is quite good nowadays).
