  • I had some issues starting the Piper Arrow at Shobdon for my flight back to Gamston. It turned out there were much bigger issues than I had thought - and I got lucky this time.

    Glad you had good training and handled it quite well! This past year I was flying a Cessna 172S with a student and a cylinder blew up, we had to perform an emergency spiral and land at a small nearby airport. ATC was the best!

    Ahhh the mighty Shobbers. My folks lived not far down the road from Shobdon over in Wigmore when I commenced my commercial pilot training. Did the PPL and hour building there, many happy memories (including the amazing people that worked there and indeed the cafe with its amazing breakfasts always on point).
    In the many years I've been flying both private and for airlines, gut feeling wins and if something doesn't feel right, odds are it probably isn't.
    Keep enjoying the flying and the great work with the videos!

      I thought the same thing. Been a very long time since I last flew one, but the fuel pressure sits between the two fuel gauges and its certainly doing a merry dance.

    Noel, i'm a regulair viewer of your vlog but only very recently discovered you fly yourselve which of course is great !
    I was suprised to se a 3 bladed prop on your Arrow, then again to long ago when i was used to see Arrows from my office desk. I flew a PA28 (fixed prop and ldggear) that i had to trottle back at 160 Kts and was able to cruise 120 Kts with 2300RPM, though I'm not an realy expert on small aircraft.
    Having said this, i used to switch off master radio during startup, as some electronics really don't like high voltage peaks (voltage, not the current) that may during from the startermotor.
    A bad fuelpump is a good reason not to takeoff but during flight of course there is the electric pump to save the day and has nothing to do with electrical problems.
    There are a lot of video's of people flying their small craft, but in 20 years yours is one to remind me how i mis my Archer.

  • @robh4671
    @robh4671 3 роки тому

    I ALWAYS used a checklist.. if you did you would know you start the engine before you turn on your radio, transponder, etc . Otherwise it drains the battery, don't take my word for it check the check list ;-) happy starting and of course happy landing.

  • @charleygilbert9532

    Pipers have two fuel pumps. The one that you checked during the run up is your back up. Do you have that on during takeoff and landing as a back up they will kick in. I personally would’ve never taken off without having a mechanic check that airplane for what was wrong. In my opinion it was very dangerous taking off.

    Would be good to see a video on what to do if something had gone wrong while you were enroute. A practice call to air guard 121.5 would be nice to see as D&D are always happy to take them. They provide a great service that's not highlighted very often, I wonder how much the GA world are aware of what they can do for a pilot who's in difficulty.

    Hi Noel, Finally getting round to getting in the air and started self study ground school here in Zambia. Question on clouds - if you VFR do you not have to "remain clear of clouds" in un controlled airspace?
    Maybe an editing thing but wondering how you can manage to fly through the clouds vfr
    Love the vids

    • @FlyWithNoelPhilips
      @FlyWithNoelPhilips  3 роки тому

      Hi Ivor, in the UK you can mix IFR/VFR as long as you have an IMC rating (a UK specific version of the full IR).I can fly through IMC with the rating without being on an IFR plan as long as I’m outside of controlled.

  • @jamesgraham7297
    @jamesgraham7297 3 роки тому

    I'm interested in this, as I have a few hundred hours on PA28 (thought don't fly anymore). Was it a problem with the mechanical fuel pump or some other cause that also prevented the electric fuel pump from assisting? A potentially nasty one, though, flying at typical UK altitudes, as you'd have to engage the electric pump and then try for a restart using the key and once you recovered from the surprise and ran through the drills, could have lost a few hundred feet.

  • @auwz66
    @auwz66 3 роки тому

    That would have been a NO GO from me sorry. If an engine does not start on the button then I am interested... if it does not start after a couple of attempts then thats it. The issue is, for me anyway, I want to know if I need to re-start that engine that it will re-start. I am going to guess there was an electrical fault with the pump causing major current draw.

  • @castletransport
    @castletransport 2 роки тому

    You know that's so weird that I came across this video because our car is having sort of a similar issue where it sometimes won't start and or when it does it might then just cut out then not start for a while. I think ours though might be fuel filter and fuel starvation maybe. But I hate it when things like that happen. Even more scary I can imagine in the air though.

    Hi noel! Just a little advise, when you move the prop lever don’t add power or take power off that aggressively, it isn’t that good for the engine. Try to be a little slower and progressive. I guess the arrow with the lycoming engine isn’t bothered that much but if you ever step up into other planes be sure to be more gentle with the blue lever. Great video by the way, cheers!

    • @jeffjeff5183

      You're exactly right. It's very very bad engine handling and will ultimately result in damage. Not only that but he tries to start the engine with EVERY navaid turned on. No wonder the starter was struggling. I wouldn't be surprised if the pump failure was a result of him abusing the aircraft getting it started. That throttle technique gave me anxiety.

      I suspect the checklist says to turn on the electronics after engine start. You can hear the gyros winding down during engine start indicating low voltage. Having avionics on during engine start or shutdown can damage them due to potential voltage spikes.

    Great vid! I also fly an arrow and sometimes the old fuel injection IO-360 is a bit of a weasel to start, especial when 'warm' so I doubt I would have put problems starting down to a dodgy fuel pump myself, so it good to have a backup :) Also after a start issue / power down its good to re-run your checklist, a fellow pilot in the P2 seat saved me from a MOR taking off at North Weald by turning my transponder to ALT before take off (Stansted TMZ) (oh come on it was only a matter of time, this is youtube :))

    I’m not a flight instructor… but if you were only on the ground for a few minutes try to start without priming…. Could be flooding your engine… The engine probably was already primed from your first flight that day…. And adding more fuel only added to the fual that was already there… I own and Fly a commander 112 A early in my flying career I ran in the same problem with my plane…

This was an engine/fuel issue not a failed ball compass you can do without. Alarm bells should of been going off in your head to get it checked out before you go.
