I bought my dream film camera! (Pentax 67)

- I hope you enjoy this video in which I test out the medium format Pentax 67. I had fun shooting test rolls on it, the sharpness and clarity is insane! Using expired film caused some of my images to be overly grainy/underexposed, or even with the backing numbers visible - my choice of film aside, this camera has met all my expectations!

Glad to see people still discovering this amazing camera! I've had one for about 30 years and do all of my B&W with it. It's built like a tank, Pentax lenses are legendary and I still like to see the look on peoples faces when they hear the shutter release for the first time!
How nice (and normal) it should be that a camera lasts you many many years. Excited for my own adventures with the Pentax 67. 😊 thank you for watching!
Can't wait to see the images you get with the 67! Best thing about quality gear is you can no longer blame your gear! It's all up to you.@@aprilroselilleyman
I hear the mirror slap on the 67 is quite something to behold. It's a camera on my list that I'd love to own one day.
Nice choice ..... It produces very unique Images..... glad to see a new generation that appreciates the old school of photography !!!!
My friend has this camera and it is such a beauty! Congratulations on adding this to your camera collection. Also beautiful images you captured 🌸
naw thank you for the lovely comment! I'm pretty stoked with it too!
April, super happy for you! Can’t wait to see more pics. I’m a Fuji 690 shooter. Super fun for portraits.
I LOVE taking B&W photos with this camera. Truly something so special! I could see very similar characteristics with your b&w too, truly lovely.
Thank you so much for watching! I’m excited to take more B&W on it, I love the emotion black and white conveys 😍 especially on medium format!
the black and white pic at 2:00 is stunning!
thank you kindly! Definitely a favourite of mine
You will never look back. The Pentax 67, is the most Beautiful camera.
That's not a camera that's a garden shed
🤣🤣🤣
Made my day ❤
Excellent camera! Fantastic lens selection too!! I like how it’s nearly as big as you!
Hahaha I’d be interested to try out some of the other lens options that are more compact 😅🤣 so the camera won’t look too huge on me
Whoa, congrats, that thing is huuuggge !
These shots look phenomenal! loved the beach one and the one with backing paper leeching through to show the exposure number
Thank you! I was pleasantly surprised at the backing paper effect too! I like how it turned out
pentax and mamiya, live from Manchuria❤
I always forget what a huge camera that is, I love your work, exposures are great... amazing understanding of light
thank you so much! The light meter doesn't work so I go by eye, which I honestly prefer anyway, (plus light meters in these old cameras can sometimes not be reliable)
@@aprilroselilleyman even more impressive… I must try that too, by eye. Greetings from Germany
Enjoy our 67. Mine was purchased from a friend. It had been her father's camera and came with the 105 and 250 lenses, pentaprism, no meter. Works great.
One of the greatest film cameras! Good light !!!
I’m totally in love with this camera. I especially adore the coloured film, and most of all, the screen that faces upward? Unless that’s not apart of it? Anyways, thank you for another incredible video. I can’t say enough to how much I look forward to it. 🌸
I forgot to clarify, yes that's a waist level viewfinder! So fun, I love the outlook on life from that angle. Thank you for watching x
Fits like a glove, suits you so well. That looks like the 55mm or the 75m. Both have Stella reputations. Good luck with that.
Thank you! Yep it's the 75mm. Looking forward to trying out some different lenses however
@@aprilroselilleyman You have a waste level finder too. Nice. The magnifier is great for critical focusing, cuts down the weight of the Pentax too. A bit of a hassle when wanting to do vertical shots but if you put the camera on a tripod it works. The SMC 105mm F2.4 wat a beauty. Two versions of the 105mm the Super Takumar, I think that's some radioactive materials baked in to the lenses. (best suited for black and white) having said that, I'm sure it would look fabulous in color as well. I would assume they'll be cheaper than the up to date version SMC 105! Back in the day everybody who was anybody in the photo industry use the Pentax67 ...
Great photos
This camera is gonna be your arm day but the images...the images are already epic...
haha it's a great workout! Thank you, pretty stoked with the images so far
"I wasn't planning on getting another_____camera"
The struggle is real! :)
Congrats on the new camera.

Haha story of my life! 🤣
@@aprilroselilleyman Same!
Had one since the early 80's. The glass is like a razor. Incredibly sharp. When you can buy a Prism finder. I am 78 and am going back to shooting film with my 6x7. Is it as good as a Hasselblad? Never used a 'blad, could never afford one. But this camera suits me admirably.
I’ve also got a prism finder, though I must say I prefer the waist level finder. Equally impressed with the sharpness.
Never used a hasselblad either for that same reason, maybe one day! But for now I sure am happy with my Pentax cameras (67 and Pentax K1000)
My fav camera ever made. Had 3 of them so far and won't see me taking portraits without it :D My setup is a bit different as I hate the left hand grip, got a handmade right hand one and some IMAX projection lenses adapted to have shallower depth of field and a more unique look. The P67 is a stunning platform for DIY adaptations.
Wow, good for you - looks in great shape! Enjoy!
Awesome photos! I recently picked up the 6x7 my and just finished my first roll, and loving it!
never realized just how massive the Pentax 67 is, but the pictures make it worth it!
Absolutely agree! I only ever use it if I have planned a day to lug it out 😂
It also looks particularly enormous in her hands haha
She very small the camrea looks massive next to her.
Also, excellent music selection!
I love this camera!!!!
I hope you enjoy it for a long time, it's Amazing!
I share your entusiasm about the Pentax 6x7 - felt in love end of the 70s when I couldn't afford it and have it now in use for nearly 15 years.
Don't forget to remove the adapter ring from the shutter speed dial if you are not using the ttl prism. That ring can easily pop off and get lost and it's not cheap to replace. (happened to me)
Good to know thank you!
It's my dream camera too! Gotta start saving up. Nice video and images. :)
one warning, with the Pentax, be carefull when removing the viewfinder/lens, these have a fusée chain drive for the metered prism, and it is easy to break, if you disassemble/assemble in the wrong order, so READ the manual carefully, and have fun, that is in essence what this is about, the feel of analogue.
Thanks for the tips! Yes I know know about removing the lens before changing the prism (thankfully!) 😅
great images, I got my dream kit too, but a Hassy 500c\m ! but some tips, GET a polariser, ND filter and a lens hood! so easy to introduce glare into an image, and I did the same when I tested mine, but with expired Fuji Pro 400H ( on a sunny day, EV 17 no less)- hence my advise! ; one other film to try, Kodak Ektar 100, I used this with the kit above, in a botanical Garden, wow, the red/greens, pop!, so a great choice for that subject matter.
Ive toyed the idea of getting one, I really enjoy using waist level finders and currently used a Yashicaflex C.
Love the waist level perspective on life! My first waist level viewfinder was a box brownie hehe! Yashicaflex C sounds like a dream, I've got a Yeshica Mat 124 (but broken) the advance winder has been jammed for awhile unfortunately.
stunning
Mwah 😘
i shot one film with one and gave it back. too heavy. I ve been using Fujifilm 690 for more than 10 years now. super happy with it
I’ve got a toddler, my arms are used to the weight haha.
Very nice video. Thank you
Loved the video! Please, who's playing the piano? What's the name of the song?
the music is from Epidemic sound, the artists are Rikard From and Will Harrison
Oh wow, now that IS a proper camera!
I've added your channel, hopefully you'll connect with another reteo film photographer 📸
black and white photos definitely have a "look" I like it
Thank you! Completely agree, black and white photos are so special
I love the pictures that came out of this
Thank you! So happy with the results
love the music in this video. Can share more info about it, please?

@@aprilroselilleyman Thank you for the quick reply. Keep up the great work!
Oh man, that thing is substantial.
Big camera, light manual....enjoy..😊
Handsome instrument, but not for wandering. It weighs more than my tent! For medium format in the great outdoors I carry a pocket-size folder.
Yep definitely not for the spontaneous adventure haha!
It's massive.
I hand a Mamiya 6x4.5. It's substantially better than a 35mm camera, and unless cropping is required, the difference between 6x7 isn't really noticeable. I can fit the 6x4.5 in a carry all bag with a big selection of lenses and therefore end up not **needing** to crop. 6x4.5cm makes good sense. I have a Linhof 5"x4" and 6x7Cm. Lens for lens it takes better pictures than the Mamiya but due to the bulk and not having the perfect lens with me all the time, I probably end up with photographs indistinguishable from the Mamiya.
In a studio environment, the 6x7cm makes a lot more sense. The Pentax is lovely, but its size can sometimes be its Achilles heel.
absolutely agree! The Pentax 6x7's size can be a problem, but the effort of lugging it around with me most days is outweighed in the results of it's photos. I previously had a Mamiya 645 which I loved, and took some great photos on (I agree that the quality of the photos is little different to the 6x7 negative) but I found myself not reaching for it due to no hand grip and occasional light leaks. Thanks for watching and commenting!
It really depends on what you do with that 6x7cm negative. If you scan them and post-process images to social media, digital display on various forms, then you'd do as well to drop back to 35mm, or even half frame format, since the medium format "improvement" in your results is likely to be an emotional determination made in exchange for the extra hassle of using medium format. If you actually print those images to larger than 8x10 inches, the differences will be obvious.
@@aprilroselilleyman I have two Mamiya 645 cameras. One is the "Super" and I have the motor drive/handgrip. That makes it very easy to use. Yes, it's nice to have a camera with movements (that's when i use the Linhof) but a good tripod and a small aperture can work wonders, to extend the focus.
Pic at 1:24 ist big art !
Thank you kindly!
Speed Graohic 4x5 still hard to beat
I got my first medium format camera a few months back and it's hard to go back it's just so fun to shoot a giant brick lol
Haha it is isn’t it!
If you ever get a metering prism finder for it remember to always remove the lens before fitting or removing the finder to the camera body, or it could break the camera mechanism. Guess who found that out too late :)
Yep I’ve got a metering prism, thankfully I did a bit of research and found quite a few people who also said they learnt too late 😢 so I know to always remove the lens first thankfully! Sorry to hear about your camera 😭
Just buy a spot meter and forget about the metered prism.
When using a film camera, to prevent film loss caused by inaccurate sensitivity, I typically employ a light meter for precise metering. The VBR-PHO metering device would be an excellent choice as it ensures effective and accurate metering, enabling you to capture exceptional photographs.
I am a wee pentax fanboy so I'd love to try one of these. It looks huge, particularly compared to my ME super which I like because I can put a little Industar 50 lens on it and slip it in my pocket
It is pretty bulky haha! My Pentax k1000 is still my go to for all spontaneous shooting as it's easier to carry. I've mainly been using the 67 for scheduled/planned shoots. But the size and weight is quickly overlooked by the results that the Pentax 67 produces (in my opinion).
Emotional images. Thank you
My kind of therapy.
please stop igniting my gas, thank you
If you join a Hasselblad group people share photos , if you join a Pentax 67 group people discuss camera problems
I sold my Pentax 67 before it broke down . The frame spacing was starting to drift , MLU was playing up randomly
I miss that giant clunk when you take a photo , that was fun
I've had my Pentax 67 for 30 years. It's been dropped, banged up, you name it, it never misses a beat. You're the first person that has ever said a P67 is unreliable. They are built like a tank!
That is a big camera
Hey camera, where are you going with that woman 😅
well done nice one
Hasselblad 503CX easier to snap. People make for better snaps.
never tried a Hasselblad, they are out of my budget. What makes for 'better snaps' is completely subjective.
Nice shots! My Dad had one of these and a few Hasselblads, I never got to use the Pentax but always loved the look of it! I wish he still had them.
ohhh i’m so glad i came across your channel. i am definitely getting this camera. i would like to know whether it takes videos too?🤎
It’s a 120 film camera, so it only takes photos. If you’re looking for a film camera that does videos, super 8 and 16mm do. 😊
@@aprilroselilleymanthank you so much, love
