- His friends and family thought it would never happen, but after 9 and a half years, Steve Kermode finally completed his ultimate DIY project. Unbelievably, he had built a 44ft ocean-going yacht in his back garden and was ready to set sail from London to New Zealand, with his family.
Growing up on the same street, Ruari Muir, had always remembered his unusual boat-building neighbour. 16 years later, he visits the Kermode family to find out what happened on their epic journey.
'Kiwi Breeze' tells the inspirational story of one man’s determination to achieve his dream.

Each family member has shown such acceptance ,respect, and encouragement for one another and allowed one another to share in Dad's dream without trying to force on one another unrealistic expectations that they must all be sailing the whole distance to New Zealand. No guilt trips by any family member on how the long trip should be accomplished. Dad got live his lifelong dream. Mom and son showed Dad love and support and Dad gave them freedom to come and go during his maiden voyage and 24,000 mile journey. Encouragement, respect ,and love made this trip epic. We all want to take a trip and not a guilt trip. We could all learn from this very awesome family.
This has got to be the most outstanding clip I have viewed.
This has renewed my spirit .
Extraordinary!
Some people do not understand the concept of No, This won't work, .
Some of us can look at an object and quite easily assemble it within our brain .
That is half the fun.
What a legacy to leave your son .
Thank ypu so much.
Nice guy... lovely wife... cutey son...positive peeps... THIS is what families should be about!!! You've already got your dream started well mate!
Loved the "If at first you don't succeed... do what your wife originally suggested..." tells me you are a fully 'liberated' man... 😃😄
I have another GREAT sign for you :
"BEHIND every SUCCESSFUL man... is an EXHAUSTED woMAN..." 😁😁😁
Safe journeys & huge hug to all of you...
This is the kind of video that puts my faith back into kiwis and how clever they can be. Love his creativity and determination. You can do anything if you put your mind to it!
Fantastic build. Super tidy boat and a great voyage.
Very intelligent man, living the dream.
That was fu**ing awesome. He had a dream and he stuck with and did what he set out to do. You have to admire people like that. He will definitely sail the other half of the world with his positive attitude. This was an inspiring video.🇨🇦🇨🇦😁😁😁
I thought I had heard about this before... and then Half Moon Bay is mentioned. I grew up 10 minutes from there! Kiwi ingenuity at its finest, what an accomplishment!
They call it Kiwi ingenuity. There is nothing a Kiwi bloke with a dream cant achieve !
We meet Steve last night in Dunedin for the All blacks vs Ireland game.
Great guy
brill, clever guy & lovely family.
The people who dream big and believe in their dreams are the people who accomplish the most in the world.
Just great! Cool to combine with Erik's shots as well. Can't wait to set my own sail.
Wow so encouraging
Wonderful, heartwarming story- thank you! Needed this. :)

Dankie. A nice story!
Very interesting ❤️👍🏼
Very good. So, when's the next half?
i wish i had that kinda spirit………curious how it was financed???
such a great family xox
An inspirational story!
very cool
yes man!!
Am i the only one wondering how this project was financed? How do you build a boat and keep your family happy? ((Can they bottle some of that stick together and get it done for me?)) I love this family's story but I have so many questions, please someone tell me there's a book that's more in depth.
I’ve watched way too many lost at sea shows and movies to do this myself.
If this makes me a sissy, I’m okay with it! The thought of dying slowing in the middle of the ocean does not sound appealing 💯
thats because your not a boat guy, they are their own mold.. statistically youre more likely to die in a car crash near your house, than at sea if you know what youre doing.
Those dilators look so scary.
Wishes and dreams Ever since i was a kid i had the same dreams to build my own sail boat and travel the world now that i have grown i wish i had enough money to build a dinghy
I'm from Florida, and I don't understand what the big deal is? It's interesting he made his own boat in his back yard. But as for sailing or being afraid of the ocean?
Because he was inspired to do something that is not normally done in a backyard and he did it from concept to completion he did it and while he did it his family was not torn apart they didn't fight to the death over this ginormous boat taking up the entire backyard and he spent months away from his family and his wife didn't divorce him or nag him to death she just integrated this dream of her spouse into her life and made the best of the process as it happened. I can say I know not one person personally who owns a yacht that built it in their backyard everyone that I know with a boat of any size has had to buy it.
My dads uncle built an 16 meter yatch by himself
Nothing new, typical 🥝 kiwi🙄🤪🤨
And how was all this funded?
Wife working 60-80 hours weeks at the local textile mills...
@@jrobbins707 Well spent though!
@Miggz 1Bay what do u know about being a real man you're probably on minimum wage
None of your business...
How does anyone afford a boat? Work.
what did the kid turn in to?????not good...
Fantastic story!
