    I'm from one of those small towns & there's a reason these towns made your list. There's nothing to do in those areas, the crime rate is skyrocketing due to drugs & some of those restaurants have been closed for years. I wouldn't advise anyone to move in those areas.

    Medical facilities are never mentioned in any of these towns. Good ones are VERY important to retirees. Also, most of these places are losing population. Why are folks moving away? There must be a reason.

      Agreed! SC has a long way to go in upgrading their Medical. It's Decades behind for the amount of Seniors they have. I know people who had issues while living in MB and they had to take them all the way to Charleston for a hospital to help them. Not good.

      Medical care has always been a challenge here. Back in the day doctors used to make house calls. I'm talking back in the '30s, '40s, '50s and even into the early '60s. That's not the case anymore. The medical care, while not the worst, certainly is not in the best shape. High demand, low availability. If you're wealthy enough to live near some of the higher priced municipalities, then of course you will have medical care available. Wherever there is money and lots of it, you will find the better quality of life. None of these towns this gentleman is talking about are places that I would move to if you were from places like California, New York, and New Jersey. In fact, you would be much better off considering Tennessee.

    • @RetirementLifeUSA
      @RetirementLifeUSA  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for your 2 cents. However, if you ask a real estate agent about neighborhood crime rates or even whether or not a particular neighborhood is a “good place to live,” they won’t be able to give you an answer. This is because information about crime rates or the opinions on the safety of a neighborhood can be interpreted as references to race or ethnicity, both of which are protected under the Fair Housing Act.

    I see a lot of comments about crime. I don't have "Stats" but I believe no matter where you live crime is a thing everyone has to deal with. I lived in Travelers Rest, SC and had bought a brand new 10x12 Trailer. Had it about a month and a half. Went to the grocery store one day about 2:00 p.m. Was gone about a half hour. Came home, pulled into my driveway and thought, "somethings not right", looked to my right and "damn, wheres my trailer"?!! Poof! Gone! Even the lock and chocks were gone! So was over $2000!!! Now also understand my driveway where it was parked was about 600 ft from the road. I did the police report and the Officer who took it said his trailer had been stolen also! He said trailer theft in SC was rampant. (Never got my trailer back!) But I have to say since we moved to SC 13 years ago that's the only "crime" we ever experienced. We moved away to a different town in SC about 6 years ago. Moved to an area that's on a dead end road in the boonies. Closest fast food place is 12 miles away. I have 3 different security camera systems so I can see pretty much anything that occurs on my property. Plus 2 dogs, one being a 120+ German Shepard. He eats anything...including any potential bad guys. Plus I'm retired Military and SC is Military friendly. And SC is weapons friendly. Big plus. And to conclude, I have lived all over the world (Military brat) and in 24 years of Air Force service have lived all over the US to include the North, South, West, East and all the way up to Alaska. We loved Alaska but work brought us to SC. So far this has been a good place to live (Upstate) and no plans to move. People by and large are pleasant and courteous. Prices are ok compared to other places. Utility prices stink but could definitely be worse. My Son lives in Hawaii and his are double or more ours. My Daughter lives in California and yep, prices way higher than ours. Water prices are crazy low here. We live about 7 miles from the Georgia border and their fuel prices are usually about 30 cents per gallon higher than ours. But their roads are much, much better than SC's. SC roads stink! Worst I've ever seen.

    Hummm.. No mention of crime which is super high in all these towns. Dillon is the most dangerous town in SC. Cultural richness = mostly black. This guy is a bit untruthful. Do your homework before you move to SC. Don't trust anyone. Do the work yourself. Crime is the most important followed by flooding if you are looking near the coast. Mortgages and common sense requires flood insurance as well. Out of all these towns Newberry is most likely your best bet. It has an interstate for fast exits from South Carolina. Reminds me of a joke
    What is the best thing out of Florida - Oranges
    What is the best thing out of Georgia - Peaches
    What is the best thing out of South Carolina - I95
    Truth be known, I love it here. I'm 20 miles inland in a zone that has never flooded and I am well armed to cover crime. I've never had even one occurrence of either. Knock on wood. But I'm seven miles outside of town where the "Cultural Richness" resides.

      Thanks for your comments. I am glad that ultimately you like living here. When it comes to certain topics....well, this will kind of explain things: Neighborhood Crime Rates: Specifically, if you ask a real estate agent about neighborhood crime rates or even whether or not a particular neighborhood is a “good place to live,” they won’t be able to give you an answer. This is because information about crime rates or the opinions on the safety of a neighborhood can be interpreted as references to race or ethnicity, both of which are protected under the Fair Housing Act. Instead of providing you with direct information on a community’s crime rates, a real estate agent should refer you to the proper resources to find out these statistics for yourself

    This all seems so attractive but here's the reality is the weather is awful for anyone who likes being outside. The heat and humidity in the summer greatly restricts your activities. In the winter it is cold. A large portion of your income will go towards your heating and cooling costs which can add a considerable strain to a limited budget. I live d near Greenville SC for a number of years. I didn't especially find the cost of living to be that much cheaper after factoring in increased energy costs which are non negotiable if you want to be comfortable in the climate. Make sure you do your research on this. Additionally, most of the downtown areas are DEAD in these smaller towns and outside of church there's not much to do.

    I'm 57, retired navy but still working. I have MS and am preparing for when I can no longer work. How is S.C. when it comes to taxes for retirees (military pensions) and available VA hospitals? My son lives in Cottageville and when we visit we stay in Summerville. We visited last July and the summer heat and humidity was brutal on my MS. Are any of these towns mentioned any better regarding heat and humidity? thank you for an informative video.

    • @RetirementLifeUSA
      @RetirementLifeUSA  11 місяців тому +1

      @deanlewis8083 First, Thank You for your service! I am sorry to hear about your situation. Regarding the taxes, S.C. does not tax military retirement income (pensions). Once you reach 65 yrs you can get even more tax relief from the state like a homestead exemption and over 65yo you can get an additional $15,000 deduction from your taxable income. Summerville is a great area, but typically the further you go inland (west) it tends to not get as hot and humid. Of the towns I mentioned in this video Laurens and Union are the furthest west. Hope this helps and thank you for watching my videos!

    All of these cities with the exception of Union, South Carolina have a higher than the US average crime rate😮
    It doesn’t matter how cheap a place is to live if you are likely to be a victim of crime.
