How do I know when to slur the bow in a tune?

A student named Emily asked me during a recent office hours session, "How do I know when to add slurring? How important is it to always use consistent bowing throughout?"

The first time I tried slurs, it almost felt like patting my head and rubbing my tummy. It felt weird but I'm still trying to get comfortable doing it. That you for all your great lessons Jason . You're an amazing teacher !

I absolutely love how you try your hardest to answer a question from every possible angle! I can sleep better tonight (being a beginner fiddler) since I had exactly the same question as Emily. It has been troubling me for a long time. I loved every way you played The Arkansas Traveler so it made clear to me that I don’t need to puzzle and puzzle over to slur or not to slur, because the main thing is to get the notes out so that it sounds like the tune it is supposed to sound like!
