I would looooove to see more videos about veganic gardening! It's a lot more complex than I had imagined and the resources out there for vegans are minimal. I'm already feeling overwhelmed! It would be so cool if you did a vlog garden update, maybe even seasonally!
Many thanks, I have been researching "what vegetables can grow in 6 inches of soil?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Ponorcas Unconventional Primacy - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to grow an unlimited food supply and ditch large food companies without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got great results with it.
With a vegan vegetable garden, how do you 'combat' slugs and snails? In the permaculture sphere I've seen runner ducks and chickens being used to address that problem. Do the frogs and toads do the work for you? (A pond should help invite them). And/or do you have hedgehogs in your garden?
I am currently experimenting with fertilizing my roses with a home made compost tea from the vegan compost I have breaking down on a tarp in the garage, but have resorted to the remaining animal byproduct-containing fruit tree fertilizer I bought years ago for my old fruit trees. I've been so frustrated by the dearth of info on veganic flower and tree fertilizing available online and at gardening shops and hydroponics places: The info available seems focused on veganic vegetable gardening. I'll try to use some of the info here to create a solution, so thanks for posting!
Weed tea! Stuff a 5-gallon bucket with weeds, fill it up with water, cover and let "cook" in the sun for a couple of weeks. I think the dilution ratio is something like 2 tablespoons of weed tea per gallon of water. Spray on foliage, or pour into soil around plants.
E. B Stone top soil uses Bat shit, aka Bat Guano. Idk if they changed their ingredients because I saw another vegan post that they use it online. I'm looking for a soil without shit it. literally shit smh
Thanks for the tip on Top soil plus. I didn't know EB stone made a soil mix that didn't contain animal byproducts. Most of their stuff does contain them, as does most other common brands, like Dr. Earth.
WATCH OUT FOR SEWAGE SLUDGE-they even passed a law they can sell you toxic-bio-hazardous sewage sludge and call it compost !!! You must find VEGANIC,! Veganic contains nothing from of/ or from any animals. It is easy to make your own soil, use what you have in your back yard if possible, can compost or add to it all left over from scraps from kitchen ( all left overs, going bad from fruits, vegetables, water from cooking any those, coffee, grounds etc , leaves from yards, grass clippings, grass, twigs- think NATURE. I looked at very old beautiful majestic Oak tree and thought of the way it composts for itself, all leaves, twigs she drops year after year she reuses. She also drops big branches and CA Indians would remove those as much as possible to protect Oak Trees so the big fallen branches did not serve as fire ladders in case of wild fires. I will go " trade "( bring water - take small bag of soil )with Oak Trees. Also CA iNDIANS GREW NOTHING & two thirds of their diet and most Animals / Birds CA from ACORNS & other NATIVE PLANTS. Ugh, I remember years ago seeing a guy carrying bone meal and it completely freaked me out. I had no idea that people used that stuff for gardening. Shudder...I will definitely be sure to buy a vegan fertilizer if I grow an herb garden again. Does anyone know if potting soil contain animal products?
I think most don't (if you don't count earthworm castings), but some organic might contain blood or bone meal. It should say on the label if it contains something like that.
Question please. I want to get a container, put purchased prepared soil in it, plant some vegetables, and let it grow. Can you refer me to a good plant-based store-bought soil and where to go to get starter plants that were started in only pkant-based soil and condtions?
Excellent video on veganic gardening. Compost truly is the best way to build up the soil. I really recommend checking out Bealtaine Cottage on youtube. The woman follows veganic permaculture principles and plants for the pollinators. I love all your work, Colleen. Thank you so much for all you do!!! :-)
Veggie Rose - a shelf with a gro-light or two in a closet, and a couple of pots for growing lettuce. If you can afford it, you can buy small countertop hydroponic systems.
Valerie Anderson I am planning a veganic SBG for spring 2018 and excited to begin that adventure. I will be launching a YT channel as well as a FB page for it if you’d like to stay connected. A worthwhile “experiment” (combining Veganic + Straw Bale method) and I’m happy to share my wins (challenges and losses if they come) with the world. Keep your eyes pealed for “Tivoli’s Peace Of Produce” coming soon to social media 🎉🥕🌽🥦🙌🏻🥒🍓✌🏻
Build mini-cages out of PVC and hardware cloth. That will keep the four-legged critters out. Kaolin clay is supposed to deter pests, but I haven't tried that yet. A lot of people spray with Neem oil.
I appreciate this so much! I’ve asked many gardeners and they tell me it’s impossible without using animal products.

Thanks, obvious speaking from experiences and knowledge. Just the thing I need.
Yes it can be done. I use compost from grass clippings, leaves and kitchen veggie/fruit scraps #veganicGardening
Mexican sunflower for warm climates and comfrey for cold climates are one of the best plant based fertilizers.
What are good nutrients for small scale growing cooking herbs ?
I'm almost 5 years late seeing your video, but, hey, the information is still very useful. Thanks for sharing.
Luv It’s so Difficult define products to buy products that are vegetarian for my garden
Thanks for the gardening tips.
Vegan gardening works. Going into year 5.
What soil mix do you use?
How do you get rid of spiders and insects?
Can you make a video on vegan products grown in vegan soil?
What kind of fertilizer should I use for planting a blueberry tree?

I was told using kelp isn't good on the ocean and fish.

Also thanks for the tip on Vegan mix. The brand is Down-to-Earth, which I don't see much. But I did a "Where to Buy" search on their website.

Thank you for this great video.
you dont show the bag? Also, you have to take B12
Yes, we need to take B 12. :)
Did you use compost when you planted? I can't find plant based compost anywhere and I want to get started on my garden?
Vibrant Plant Based Living eco scraps, they sell it at target
@@CharlestonSocietyOfHorror So I called the company and it's not plant-based but Good Dirt is vegan :-)
So what soil and compost do I use?
thank you Colleen! I just took notes on this. :) do you think you could make more videos on vegan gardening!?
when i bought plant food and saw all the non vegan things in there i was like wtf
Ikr! I was so shocked by how many animal products were stuffed into our gardening products 🤮
Hello new subscriber here! How do you mix your soil to start your bed? I am having a difficult time finding vegan friendly soil. Thank you :)
Do you use worms in your bed?
Question please. I want to get a container, put purchased prepared soil in it, plant some vegetables, and let it grow. Can you refer me to a good plant-based store-bought soil and where to go to get starter plants that were started in only pkant-based soil and condtions?

Always look forward to your content. Would you consider making a similar video on food that can be grown indoors, herbs, maybe? 🌞
On my channel I have a couple of videos about growing lettuce indoors. SO easy! :)
I wish i had space for gardening
You can do allot in pots and small spaces -research it !
Veggie Rose - a shelf with a gro-light or two in a closet, and a couple of pots for growing lettuce. If you can afford it, you can buy small countertop hydroponic systems.

Hello, could you give me a tips how you manage to handle garden pests like rats and some insects ?
Build mini-cages out of PVC and hardware cloth. That will keep the four-legged critters out. Kaolin clay is supposed to deter pests, but I haven't tried that yet. A lot of people spray with Neem oil.
also E.B. Stone sells tons of soils with chicken shit, oyster shells and other none vegan crap
Hi! I just ran across this as I’m building my own house maybe next year? Idk. But can you list the products and link them in the description?
Great information!
More on veganic gardening: ua-cam.com/video/bMpMTo3--eY/v-deo.html
I use my pets waste (rabbits, doves etc.), its better off in the compost than in the landfill. Other than that its veganic gardening all the way.
Any thoughts on using worm castings or vermicomposting?
