Melina Tanagri is a very special case of greek singer-songwriter that needs to be discovered. I guess she knew from the very beginning that she was addresing a very selective audience and also that all the rest, that is this most pathetic post-metapolitefsi generation, had either a sterile appetite for whatever coming from the west no matter how undigested, or for the vast majority, something like an allergic reaction to the quality listenings of their parents (imagine, during your parents' youth the most shamelessly commercial was something of the superb quality of Kazantzidis). That's not to say that there are no longer interesting creators in greek music, on the contrary, they have to struggle with inflation of many who try to make their little contribution assisted by modern eases and above all with that blurring of the lines between local and foreign traditions. And, yes, the autistic and self-refering media system won, we no longer have critical audiences, we have (sub-)cultural products' consumers. If you are like me and enjoy your insomnia, surely you don't fail to know those annoying idiots that pump volume to max and drive after midnight through your neighborhood. The worst of it all is that they lead you to this devastating feeling that he's the same jerk playing again and again the same crap (not even a song at all) for the last two decades. If we need to catch up with the lost thread of what could be a national school of good yet broadly accepted music, paying equal attention to composition and lyrics but far from programmatic declerations, Tanagri's ergography is a nice place to start.
