Themed after a tricked-out 1950s-era hot rod, Lightning Rod ® launches riders from zero to 45 mph more than 20 stories up its lift hill to one of the ride’s first airtime moments. At the crest of the hill, riders face twin summit airtime hills before tackling the daring first drop. Lightning Rod races down the 165-foot drop and propels guests along its 3,800-foot track to a top speed of 73 mph. There is no surprise why USA Today readers have consistently named Lightning Rod ® one of the top-10 best roller coasters in the country.
Located in Dollywood’s Jukebox Junction, Lightning Rod gives riders nearly 20 seconds of airtime across its unique hybrid track structure, which includes both a wood stack “Topper Track” and a steel “Ibox” track atop a massive wooden frame. The coaster train comprises 12 cars, carrying two passengers each, for a total of 24 people per train.
Note: Guests with casts above the elbow or hard casts on legs are not permitted to ride.
Special Attraction Information: Lightning Rod is subject to closures during inclement weather conditions including lightning, snow, extreme cold, or hot temperatures and high winds.

This is a small thing but thank you so much for showing what the seats and restraints look like. I always get nervous that the restraints won't be secure enough to hold me in (even though i know it's not true) so seeing how they work and what to expect from them really helps ease my nerves. My family is taking a road trip to tennesee starting tomorrow and when we go to Dollywood I'm hoping to get a ride onthis beauty!

I just rode it with the launch last June. Seeing how they're replacing it with a chain lift, I'd say that I rode it just in time. Also, based on how I waited sixty minutes for it with no breakdowns, I'd also say I was lucky.

I have been on many coasters in my life. I have been on the fastest, tallest, and other coasters all around the world. This ride is at the top. My first time riding it, when I was 10 years old, that first drop felt so long. Since it's on a mountain, it altered my perspective and when we were starting the 90 degree turn, I didn't realize the drop had ended until we were sideways. Airtime is insane, whether sideways, floater, or ejector. Overall, my top coaster and I would love to go back there again. :]

I wouldn't worry about saftey of riding it at all, it's inspected everyday. The change they are making is to keep it consistently working and reduce downtime of the ride. It's the fastest coaster in the park at 73mph, if you like that type of speed, go for it!

I rode Lightning Rod 3-4 years ago when we last came up to Pigeon Forge. I thought to myself WOW! That was the fastest I have ever been on a coaster. I just rode back in June, the Velocicoaster at Islands Of Adventure and I will never ride that one again. Before I rode Velocicoaster I thought Lightning Rod was a wee bit too fast for me. But now I know it is not. I will ride Lightning Rod again. I read on something today that they are taking out that launch at the beginning up the big hill and replacing it with a high speed chain lift. It didn't state why. Do you happen to know they are taking out that fast launch?

@@AdventureIsOutThere Thank you bro. I actually was not aware that there had been problems with the launch system. The only time I rode it everything operated perfectly.
