I'm glad you are so kind, and can share your skills with your young neighbor. She looks like she's really learning a lot from you. I'm sure she's happy to have a good friend and mentor like you. Tell her not to worry about being a newbie. We all start from the beginning at first.

Rita wilson I was the same as a child. I grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and so wanted the bush. No one ever taught me. I moved to the north and bought 2 30 acres wooded lots that were side by side for only $10,000 each. The owner held the mortgage. $200 a month is all I paid for 11 years. I learned everything on youtube. How to build a log cabin, hunt, run a snare line, cut my own hair, gardening, fixing hand tools, how to run a saw and log and canning! You can do it.

So very proud of you for teaching your young neighbor!!! You are an awesome mentor!... as they say in English.... I have be able to teach a few skills to both my younger daughter and son here at home, during this Covid pandemic. lol they are often more taken with what the internet offers..... lol my youngest son is now learning some life needed cooking, sewing and simple survival skills... he, to my sadness chose his sports alone... above his (my dreams of both, like his brother accomplished) scout training.... my eldest is an Eagle Scout, and is now in his PHD program at his university. He met a few other “Eagles” in his honors dorm and programs early on at collage.... these boys bonded and continued to live and be a unit, all lived frugal, cooked and shared family meals like a family! They made and still make it a point to plan and take trips and enjoy their outdoor skills often with others, and every year on big, longer trip just for them! Even during this time, they changed it up in the pandemic early on.... they traveled the US and booked National parks and Airbnb as needed.... My husband was pampered and his vacations were resorts. lol, I was raised with two sisters, we camped for family weekend trips and for summer vacations.... Fishing and (boating / canoeing were are other transportation...lol) were also parts of the trips... lol, trust me.... we new about our cars, oil levels and changing a tire.... Even Now in my 50’s, just three weeks ago, one sister and I ( living close by) helped our dad for two full days with the trees.... taking down and splitting and stacked lumber that fell during a huge storm.....) lol, yes we used chain saw, axes, split axes, small tractors, etc.... we were taught.... haha, I was a rather good den mom, and on the Boy Scout board.... so, I too shot arrows and ammo.... .... loved archery, and it was even a taught to me as a girl’s PE class in my HS! Lol I’m old?... Helping and learning safe skills is also a way to honor, and respect God, and the beauty of his gifted nature. Here at home.... we only have 1.25 acres, but it has a good deal of various trees, lol, my husband now knows what are poisons plants.... after I and my son, both tried to teach him! He now listens to me more.... we are coming up on our second year living in this home and on this small plot of land...

A simple suggestion; when adding the ferns, put the shoots (the stick ends) facing up. This allows rainwater to run down the actual leaves of the ferns. You will notice that the fern branches and leaves grow ‘up’ from the stems. It’s a bit like putting shingles or shakes on a roof. Also, start at the bottom of the structure and work your way up in layers. This ensures better ‘runoff’ of rainwater.
The camp is looking good! Keep up the great videos! 👍

Hi Vanessa and Lea. I was right in my other comment that I thought she was the one who was helping you with the animals while you are away. Hi Lea, you are very lucky to be learning with one of the best. Not just with the building skills, and finding edible and medicinal plants and those kind of things, but first and most importantly how to observe and make yourself familiar with all that is going on around you, and respect and protect the nature where you visit. How to be safe and enjoy what Nature has provided ... all the plants, trees, and especially all the little animals who live where you are visiting, and to clean up when you are done and leave no trace that you have even been there. I wish you many years of learning and enjoying all that Vanessa and Mother Nature can give you. You are in very good hands !! Oh, I almost forgot, like someone else said, instead of newbie, or tenderfoot, how about, the Bushcraft "Sprout"? Like all the trees and bushes around you started as sprouts, so begins your journey into this wonderful life that awaits you. So, Lea the Sprout, I wish you all the best in everything you do. Listen, learn, practice, and most of all, HAVE FUN !!! Hope to see you in many more episodes. Please say hello to your boys Vanessa, from me in Alaska.

Hello Vanessa and Lea. Can I first say the plant you used, in English is called 'Bracken' (Pteridium) be careful for our friend Poldi, the plant sap can be 'not good' for him, may cause irritation, did he have any itching? 🐶.
Your camp looks the perfect size for one or two persons. I like your walls, great! Though always good to leave 2 or 3 small holes in the bottom of firewall for a little wind, or the wind goes over your firewall, making the smoke disturbed. I loved your clay base idea👌. Lea is a good 'Woman Bush-crafter student' Fire-starter, with the best teacher.
I used to love wild camping in Wales and Cornwall when I was younger.
Peace and love to your family, Stay safe. And as always. Greetings from Liverpool.
    Waiting for part II.

Vannesa, i loved the idea of using the branches for the fire to suspend your pan and cook pot, if we think about geometry, 3 points determine a plane, so only 3 sticks would be used, and if you used longer ones and drive into ground at an angle outward you can increase the fire area while still having the pan suspended. It is a super idea you had, just needed refined.

"Fern" is the english word for the plants you used on the roof. "Amber" is the english word for the tree resin (or sap) when it turns to stone. It's cool seeing insects millions of years old in amber. Great vid...Always like watching.

I believe the type of fern they used is 'bracken'. There are fibers in the stems of bracken from which you can make a pretty decent cordage.

Good job nice lady. Nice to see another young lady learn about real life, rather than sit infront of a TV or gaming thing. I may be a bit slow watching your video, but I still enjoy the late watches. Stay safe nice people and be happy.

I recognized Lea from when she was in your video before and helped with the lamb. And I even remembered her name, because one of my Aunts was named Leah. --- When tree resin fossilizes it becomes Amber. It takes between 2 and 10 million years. --- If you rub your skin with Citronella or Peppermint leaves it will help keep the mosquito away. --- The plants you picked for the roof covering are called Fern in English.

Very commendable that you practice the kind of situational awareness that you do. Always check your area, be aware of your area and the approaches to it, and especially check for what has changed since you were last there. Großartige Arbeit, Gott segne euch beide, meine Damen. Stay safe and healthy from the USA.

*_Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as she heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring, she felt compelled to plunge into the forest, and on and on, she knew where or why; nor did she wonder where or why, the call sounding imperiously, deep in the forest. The forest she entered was oak-brown, primitive and wild. We are in awe of the size and majesty of the trees. Their knotted arms rose ever upwards, as far as our head could lift. There's a deep, pervading serenity, quiet and solitary ambience that surrounds the trees, which stood ghost-like silent observers of the beautiful women, building a cabin._*
