This blew me away. I have heard many stats, saw many presentations, and actually knew a lot of this, but the amount of info presented here is absolutely mind-blowing. And a lot of it shocking! Imagine, Bermuda has the greatest broadband penetration! And there's 5X the # of words in the English language as when Shakespeare lived! Wow...
What makes this video even cooler is that it is already out of date even thought it is 2 years old...just goes to prove the point that we are in exponential times.
Marie Colter But it all comes at a price - Energy consumption of the Tianhe-2 (MilkyWay-2) cluster in China that is in #1 spot eats up 17808 kW of electrical power - In ONE HOUR of use that consumes 3 times the average household in my town for ONE YEAR.
Can definitely tell this was a video created as inspiration at a yearly executive conference, in this case Sony's. But very well done, and truly amazing to see the differences between now and 20 years ago.
Luke Jespersen I agree with you! This video contains interesting and eye-catching facts but the creator of it isn't testifying to the implications of them. Firstly, he or she doesn't stress this in the face of population growth and how informational extraction given the world population hasn't increased much in even the past one hundred years and how information patents per thousand has actually declined greatly. He or she additionally overstresses the relevancy of the information we are discovering along with not addressing how so much of this information will later be disproved. Lastly, the supercomputer exceeding human computational capabilities is a viewpoint which is being looked at with more skepticism as we find out more and more how we haven't even touched the basics of artificial intelligence along with there being many physical limits to it.
Re. Shakespeare: The most important factor in the different structures of Shakespeare's works is that English is a Germanic language, the content of which (structure and vocabulary) is derived largely from old, high German. When Shakespeare wrote, he used much of the structure of this language, rather than that of modern English. More compelling evidence of German's influence on English can be clearly seen in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, written about 250 years prior to Shakespeare.
Take note this is over 2 years old, the research probably over 3 years old! Anyone know if the numbers have been recalculated for 2010 or 2011? Noticed that what was mentioned was that "by 2013 a $1000 a computer that could exceed the computational capabilities of the human brain"? This year was the start with IBM placing a computer on the Jeopardy game show!
Mind boggling love this video. AT 62 I am a Visual Fine Arts Major .I went back to college so the high tech stuff would not pass me by. I realize now it has and I am OK with that. I can turn on a computer, text and make a video and make fine art :-)
@TheVitalityDoctor ... this is 2.5 years old. Many of the stats are already blown out the water (Where is MySpace now? ;-) Would be interesting to see an updated version.
Very interesting and informative. The bit about Shakespeare was a bit misleading though, since in his time, every educated person spoke, read and wrote fluent Latin, no matter where in Western Europe they resided. Therefore, Shakespeare had both English and Latin at his command, not just one language.
I am amazed, but not surprised, by the speed of innovation. Yet, in the final analysis, what have we done with all of the info, the inventions, the technology--to better the planet, our society, ourselves? I think we ought to be sort of ashamed that with all of THIS, we still have war, murder, and a lack of desire to learn from our history.
Before Google and wikipedia and wikitictionary they asked questions to parents, teachers, and telephone operators for long distance calls or looked it up in phone book for local calls or encylopedia, or dictionary or in a library for other information.
Believe this video was introduced in 2006 and presented at the Sony Stockholder meeting. It was an interesting method to create shock: about all the music being downloaded and not being sold.
Assuming that India is currently doing better than the Us in terms of education, What are they doing differently?? I would love to know. I am an educator and would love to obtain some insights. I would love to learn how I can change my teaching methods in order to help bring about some change? It would be beneficial to hear from people who have first hand experience about the education system in India.
I find it interesting that they say the most in demand jobs in 2010 didn't exist in 2004 in a video posted in 2008. How do they know what the most in demand jobs will be 2 years in the future?
@mechanicalbu11 I didn't know about the studies on IQ with breastfeeding. How much fluoride does it take before those side effects begin? Fluoride is put in the water system, so I'm sure I did drink it, but not straight up and not in major quantities. My dentist did have me brush my teeth with fluoride, though. And your comment says to not let children drink fluoride, but your studies are for a fetus, a fetus doesn't drink water, a pregnant mother does, so are the effects the same after birth?
@abirv98 well I would have typed the rest of that but the iPhone doesn't tell u how many characters u have left remaining and I can't remember it all so i won't bother...
"the amount of new technical information is doubling every two years..." how does that mean that half of what a student learns at school if outdated two years later? It's not like what was valid two years ago is no longer valid! There's not a 2-year cycle that starts from zero each time. We build upon what technical information was previously available to build new knowledge, which doesn't void the old one. That assertion ruined the credibility of that "research".
@crossmoss "The FACT is that even if you do not graduate from high school you could have been valedictorian in America." What? This is from the dictionary: Valedictorian - n 3. ( US ), ( Canadian ) a person, usually the most outstanding graduate, who delivers a farewell speech at a graduation ceremony Collins English Dictionary - Complete & Unabridged 10th Edition Be definition a valedictorian is in a graduating class.
Lowered pricing (or cheapened products, most often) allowed the gain in the numbers of users. How cheap will they be when only a few can find a job? Who will access all the irrelevant, or bother to do more than play games?
One year to go for that supercomputer. Think we can pull it off? We were pretty damn close with that IBM Jeopardy challenge, I think. Come on, guys, ONE STEP MORE!
it means that filters are important. focus on the things you like. forgettabout the other things because they will carry on whether you care about them or not. carry on.
he adoption rate of new technologies does seem to be accelerating, however mass adoption depends greatly on mass appeal, mass communication and economic viability. Don't expect the exponential growth in adopted technology to continue at the same rate. The digitalization of information technology is at it's peak. What's around the corner is not likely to be nearly as world changing as the events depicted here.
Humm, try not to state your opinion as fact, it could mislead people. In 2011 the K from Fujitsu, was the first supercomputer to process more than 10 PFLOPS which is 4 times faster than the human brain. Since then that number has almost doubled and they can hold more than x20 the memory of a human brain. Of course the human brain is powerful, but its alot more than pure processing power, consumes little energy, extremely compact with high memory density and runs an incredible evolving os.
What really scares me is that this video was made in 2008, so I'm wondering how outdated this information is now
Like who still downloads music illegally when they have cheap streaming devices...
And I hope those baby birth rates went down, too.

This video used to be interesting and cool back when it came out. Now it feels like it was a warning.
How come at 0:39 it says top 10 demand jobs in 2010 when this video was uploaded on October 21,2008
3:45
Where is my light speed internet cable then?
As for the next bit, do we really have computers like that yet?
I do not understand how at 0:39, it states that in the jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. This video was published in 2008...
So, it's 2013...where's that supercomputer?
well its 2018 and still waiting for the supercomputer LOL found this video in my favorite i don't know why
@@Samirking22 There already are supercomputers that exceed human brain processing. The first of the kind was actually built in 2011

Just watched this in January of 2017. This is so crazy and this was 8 years ago. Assuming it was true of course . . .

Wtf is wrong with song
The song is gold.
This is a great video, but it sure needs an update! Does anyone know if a newer version is on-line somewhere?
an update would be great - I'm sure it would be just as mind blowing to see how much it's changed in the last 2.5 years...
Three years later, and video is still relevant
Agree, the info is slow down more frequently so info does not flow as fast as shown on the statistics show but then again its already mind boggling.
kindly provide the clipping of this video. This is awesome.
