  • Interior designer Erick Garcia of Maison Trouvaille returns to Architectural Digest for another episode of Replace This Space, today visiting celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur Jen Atkin to reimagine her kitchen. Having demolished the existing space down to the walls and floorboards, Erick has a blank slate to start from to address their wishlist for the new kitchen, like seating around a central island and plenty of hidden storage.

    Beautiful job - however, Jen’s want for a built in breakfast nook was totally dismissed 😬 there are so many chic ways to do that, and he just totally didn’t try to make it work for her. They have totally different functions. If I was the client, I think I would’ve been pretty sad about that.

      Yes. I also feel like the small round table made the space look void. It also looked very grounded. What I would have done was used the Tampa table by Oliver Matthews, used the same chairs on the entry side and a curved bench and the window/wall side. Put a large vase with tall flowers in the middle so it doesn’t look so grounded, and an oval shaped light fixture that would bring the eyes up. Maybe a wide lantern pendant.
      If not, I would have built that wall farther inward below the windows, use the same oval table, have an oval cut out where the seating would be. With seating, the wall would act as the back of the bench, and then put an open back curved bench on the other side. Put some plants on top of the bench wall, and then maybe either shelves for books on each side of the wall where the bench is, or storage hidden with mounding or board and batton.
      Basically the space would look like this

    A designer's priority should be both the clients needs, and then aesthetics of the space. He totally ignored what Jen wanted the space to feel like and focused only on Mike's needs. Jen doesn't look too happy with the space. Also, the TV was too small for that space, instead a wall art would have made a nice impact.

    That table is too small for the nook. He should have listened to Jen and if not a rectangular table, he could have at least had an oval table so there is more room for people and stuff while also incorporating the rounded wall. Instead, he disagreed with everything she said so instead of feeling at home in her new kitchen, she just thought about how instagramable it was.

      @sincerelysof Рік тому +1

      I do like the new kitchen, but I agree. He did shut down her ideas immediately. Although, some of her ideas were indeed impractical, her idea for a rectangular table was understandable. The space is big, so it needs a big table. Yes, a table without corners makes sense in that place, but the functionality and size of it was completely disregarded. An oval table would suit the room the best. The clients also mention the usual big social gatherings, so more seats are a must.

    This kitchen was bigger than the footprint of my whole house! It literally has an echo even after the remodel. So out of proportion it makes the humans inside look tiny (imagine how that little baby will feel when eating breakfast in their high chair.. like they're in a cafeteria.)
    There's a limit to what design can accomplish when the proportions are that out of whack but the neutral on neutral, minimalist aesthetic does it zero favors. It is an oatmeal colored cavern.
    Definitely needed more clearly defined zones rather than acres of bare countertop and one round table (which was also out of proportion with the space). More texture, pops of color (not just one plant), and some 3/4 walls or at least a folding screen to break up the space. Real art on the walls, maybe a tapestry to soften the hard lines and be proportionate with the space. A great sideboard. A cozy sofa/coffee area for mom and baby to play and relax while dad is baking? More textiles. Not putting a banquette under that bay window was a mistake, it could have been fab for entertaining. The tiles they selected were incongruous and look liked remainders from a La Quinta Inn buffet. Instead of adding texture or interest they just emphasized this blah oatmeal aesthetic.
    Was the plate collection just.. white plates? 🤔 If my friends consistently gifted me white plates, would get new friends (and plates).
    IMO - so much wasted potential in this space. It looked like a set from Gattaca. Guys! Clean/minimal design doesn't have to mean cookie cutter. The client saying it looked like a pinterest page was tragically apt.

    Not even going to lie, I don’t like it at all. The cabinet doors look kind of cheap to me even though they’re obviously not. If you were going minimal, I would have just went for press cabinets, the cut outs take away the luxury that cabinets have because the pulls and hardware make the kitchen look like some sort of jewelry. I love the stone that they used, but it looked kind of disconnected from everything else, and to me it didn’t really make sense for the space. Love the backsplash and the range though. And I LOVE the overhang on the island. Maybe I would have added open shelving or glass doors for more dimension and so it doesn’t feel like a box
    The kitchen and dining space have a different vibe. The small round table makes the dining space look very void, it also isn’t focaled for the TV, so it doesn’t really make sense. I think a wide oval table would have been better with an open back bench on the window/wall side and minimal chairs on the other. The island is very pretty but the rest of the kitchen is absolutely vile. In my opinion it's just impractical; the handles on the cabinets seem too shallow to comfortably grab them, the sink in the middle is a bad idea to me because it actually creates two smaller spaces on the island so I'd move it a little bit to the side. Another thing with the island is that it has seating... now, who wants to sit and watch someone do the washing up? I don't really get it but it's not my kitchen so I don't have to like it 😝 Then, the area next to the stove is so tiny, it will be difficult to fit anything there, especially if somebody is using a cookbook, a laptop or even an iPad to follow the recipe. Also, coffee station is now just a coffee machine built into the wall? and then above it, open shelving with plates almost on the ceiling? ok? I guess? I mean good luck. And the last thing, two TVs in almost the same room? what for? Anyways, this design is definitely not for me XD

    I don't get the hate in the comments, okay it's basic, but this is the trend these days. Also, they mentioned that they like Scandinavian style and yeah, Scandinavian style is literally this basic and simple, but if that's what they like?
    Also, I really do believe that this is a practical improvement, the island is easier to clean, it has outlets, more storage, extra seating and in my opinion a nicer color. Plus, yeah, the sink is closer to the fridge now which is way more practical than before.
    Yeah okay, the dishes are all white and she probably bought them, they aren't her family's and even if they were they really aren't that special, but honestly who cares. I think that they honestly weren't looking for a really "unique" kitchen style-wise. They just wanted some practical small changes and some different materials and that's what their designer made.

    I like this kitchen, however. The designer did not take his clients' viewpoints into consideration, which I would consider unprofessional.
