Consider extending counter top out to include that 6x6 post. It really doesn’t add much for cost and will look less awkward. You can then pull the post into design and hang some side planters or maybe signs like bar open, etc.

I would make the U shape open to the side that is the same side of the main entrance door. For ease of grabbing stuff in and out instead of having to walk all the way around. Install the drink fridge at the post facing the same direction on the main entrance door as its not needed for cooking at and more for the family and friends that come over. Wouldnt want them in the kitchen as your cooking when they just want a drink. Basically make it face out. Having the closed off side of the U shape at the corner of the window would cut off the view from the guest area in order to keep a cleaner look and appearance while cooking too. Basically at 15:38 where your facing the wall/window I would make that span countertop. All this would still allow you to run gas line and electric around to appliances.

Won't work, I'd have to shorten the entire kitchen by half because the other end would be in our windows. Not to mention pulling up in the yard and looking into a kitchen area isn't the best looking.

I have to agree with Russell Parker, you want a large double sink. I had a small one and had to rip it out to replace it after six months. I didn't realize how much I would need it for food prep for the grill and smoker. Right now one half contains my old fashion ice cream freezer churning the best ice cream ever.

This is your space so do what you want. From my little experience with outdoor kitchens with tile as the counter top, I didn't like having all the seams between the tiles. As I seen someone else mention I'd try for solid surface scraps if you can find some that would work or just "buy once cry once" and get stainless tops. Dealing with food and drinks on a surface with many seams just makes you have to spend way more time keeping it clean and you'll end up wishing you would have went ahead and spent the extra upfront for a solid surface top. Again this is your space, do what you like. That's just my thoughts. I can't wait to see it complete.

  • @ShaneZettelmier

For an outdoor kitchen I say the number one most important thing is make it really easy to clean, even something you can pressure wash or at least spray with a bunch of degreaser and hose off.
Make your faucet one of the tall ones you can stick a pot under it. An exhaust fan above it to move air away or a fan blowing so you don’t get smoke and stuff hanging up there but you don’t want a ton of air moving that’s gonna hit a grill or something that needs to maintain temperature.
Any kind of cabinets you get should be really well sealed to keep bugs and mice out. I don’t know what to do about the Bears 😂
I would also wire a couple of outlets under the edge of the bar so people can charge phones and stuff like that or you can plug your camera in or an extra fan or light or something out there just so you don’t have to have everything by the wall. GFCI of course since you’re outside. A dinner bell. A security camera on it.
If you going to incorporate the cooking stuff and you’re gonna do wood would I would consider would be to run a decorative stone or tile edge and wrap that around the Blackstone so you don’t have any heat issues, it’ll also be easier to clean if grease splatters a little bit while you’re cooking.
One thing I would do is find a place that does the granite countertops and talk to them about scraps. They get a lot of end cuts that are just under size or have an uneven edge, sometimes you can get some pretty decent size slabs for cheap. I would do tile if I couldn’t find any good granite pieces. Tile works great and it’s easy to clean and it’s weather resistant and it’s easy to update if you wanna change the look later.
It might be cool to have a deep fryer out there. I like the idea of deep frying but I don’t eat that much deep-fried food but it would be really cool, especially if you were doing a catch cook and clean thing.
I think it’s gonna be pretty cool and this fall when things start to cool off it’s gonna be really nice to get out there.

I was thinking about remnants, too. There's no law that says you have to be matchy matchy, it just needs to look intentional. Maybe a remnant of stone on the bar level and a restaurant style counter on the work surface area on the cooking side. Reclaimed wood or something cool under resin on the sink/refrigerator side.

Andrew I would reverse the U, you're going to be bringing stuff from inside and now you have to walk all the way around. I think you still need a u-shape to hide the gas lines. I recommend using steel framing and either do stucco or cultured stone on the sides. You'll hate a tile countertop, stuff likes getting in the grout.

    • @truckguy6666
      @truckguy6666 2 роки тому +1

Yes, steel framing or concrete block if you want it to last! Wood will not last long and you will regret it. For the countertops I would search for Pre-Fab quartz countertops (its just man made granite).. around here you can get the pre-fab tops with a bullnose edge already done in like 9' lengths and cut to length yourself. You can get granite too but it will not hold up outside as well. Actually you're East Coast so you probably just need a polished edge with the 3cm thick material. Out here its all 2cm (or 3/4 inch) so you have to have an edge detail put on it. At any rate its doable, beautiful, long lasting, and very cost effective. I would definitely keep the cooktop(s) OFF of the wall of the house. That is asking for issues.

    • @Dwillems26
      @Dwillems26 2 роки тому

I agree with reversing the U. I also had the thought of putting the opening in the middle of that 10' long counter. So you still have seating pool side for guests, but you still aren't walking as far. Would also help keep the grill heat away from guests.
I also like the idea of extending the countertop to and maybe around the post. Not the cabinets, just the countertop.

Drawers are way better than shelves and won't cost too much more when you consider the convenience. Had another thought. If you put the mini fridge directly under the window. Then when you use the window as a pass through, you can set your trays of food directly onto the top of the fridge. Then when you go outside you can just move the food down into the fridge. Now with the fridge under the window. The spot you were thinking about putting the fridge in the U of the outdoor kitchen could be a door. Think bottom of a dutch door, the style with a shelf at the top of it. Could be made to look seamless or invisible. It could keeps you from walking around and a clean look from the parking area. Oh wait the gas line.... Trench and tile floor? Just ideas....

You might want to also consider that you're gonna be bringing food/ingredients from inside the house. Maybe have the entire thing be a set of parallel lines, rather than a more closed shape. This way you can go straight from the front door around the corner into the prep area.
Having it open also lets you get access from both sides depending on what you've got planned for the future.
That does make it a bit challenging to get the gas line over to the far side, but I'm sure you can think of something for that.

Stainless is the way to go. That allows you to use food service-grade sanitizer, very cheap at Sam's Club, and literally clean it to NSF standards exactly like a restaurant. But stainless is expensive. I don't even want to look. Tile sounds like a good approach if you can get the grout sealed. Junk and germs will get into any crevice and this is going to be outdoors with dust and blown rain, probably curious animals walking on it. It needs to be something you can quickly and easily sanitize whenever you need to. All of this you already know. Thanks so much for sharing your thought processes as you go. Many people just do it and show it but never explain why or why not. This is one huge reason your videos are so awesome. No matter what it is you are doing, you always share the why.

Love your thought process Andrew. I would at least stain in the concrete slab if you're worried about stains. And the best countertops for outside is wood with stain or epoxy stain. If anything's drops on the tile counter top, it cracks or breaks. And the best benefit about building everything with wood is that if it gets damaged by wind, a bear damage it etc., it's easy to fix and you can always change and add things later which makes it much easier and cheaper on you.

I was at a tile shop a couple weeks ago and they had some amazing looking 2 foot by 4 foot porcelain tiles. My first thought when I saw them was that they would be awesome for a countertop. You get the ease of working with tile but you don't have many of the grout joints that typically make tile countertops a pain, and porcelain wouldn't have a problem with stains or cleanup. You're probably not going to find anything like that at Lowes but an actual tile place should have them.

just gotta say that while it may look a little better to under mounting that mini-fridge, it is going to render the bottom 2-3 shelves virtually inaccessible without crawling around on the ground. if it were me I would build something like a bar back kinda thing that would frame in the TV maybe a few shelves to hold your bottles of liquor and then put that mini-fridge on top of the counter. would give you a ton more under counter storage and would be much more convenient to reach beverages on all the shelves. The bar-back style would look decent too if done nicely and dont think would be too expensive.

My vote is to first talk to the (and/or any and all similar) folks you got your super duper commercial sink from. for a prep table or two you could maybe cut up or something.
Unfortunately a lot of restaurants went out of business during lockdown and as you know you can't beat used stainless steel commercial grade quality gear for value. You often say what a great deal you got on your sink so try that same route again.
Used commercial is far better than new consumer imho
also check with the guys you got your kitchen granite counter tops from for scrap pieces you may piece together in a Mosaic pattern or something as seams don't matter outside
or you could use marine-grade finishes like fiberglass gel coat or something for a countertop or even Teakwood meant for boat decks as a countertop you don't need much
    think outside the box
    that stuff would last forever.
    Food for thought,
    Good luck!

Use the same siding and paint scheme on the bar that you use on the house. It will make it look very integrated. Second, I do recommend the concrete pour in place countertops which can be done as a one man show. I hear you on the fear of food and other stains, but consider a very dark concrete dye to hide any future stains. Take a look at Modustrial Maker on youtube. As for the gas you may want to consider a timed shutoff valve, some insurance companies require them for outdoor kitchens.

Ok when I was growing up we had Butcher block counter by the sink so that we could clean and cut, I would suggest that you put the TV on a swivel more in the corner not above the sink area or the cooking area just because the cooking area the steam and the heat like you talked about, and for the sink water splashing up but the biggest thing is if someone’s watching a game and your heads are in the way that could be a really big distraction so I would suggest a swivel for the TV. And if you put a bar area above the Blackstone while you’re cooking that heat and steam is going to go up into their faces as they’re sitting there. What ever you choose is going to be wonderful:) tfs stay safe and God Bless:)

you're pretty good with all your projects; I would highly suggest your cook top be at least out in the open up from under the patio cover---I designed my patio and patio cover with a 2-3 foot buffer (extension) out from under the patio cover so my grill is literally in the open so to speak but the bbq chefs (loosely worded lol) are mostly standing under the patio. In your case I would have the grill just outside the patio cover with your back towards the future tv or even at an angle might work. This protects your patio against any flareups. I think you mentioned it. I would kick that counter out to incorporate the 4x4 post the lil ladder is leaning on; you could hang ornaments from it and such. Same with the sink I plumbed it in that same purpose constructed grill slab I guess you could call it. You can still build the cabinet(s) to cover your stubouts but I think you're doing an excellent thing by reaching out for opinions. Anyway, I'm sure it will work out for you and Tiff. Either way you have plenty of room to do that in-ground whole hog Inca style!!

We bought our house primarily because it had an outdoor kitchen/living area, and if we're home and awake, we're usually out there. That being said, you are super correct, stay away from the concrete countertops. Getting grease stains off is impossible. Also, if you do go with a two burner stovetop get one that's side by side vs one like ours that's front and back. The back burner rarely gets used, as you have to reach across the front burner to get to it. I did a back splash in our small bathroom using a hard glazed tile and instead of using the traditional grout I used a white kitchen and bathroom silicone to attach the tiles along with fill the cracks between the tiles. It has been over 20 years since I installed them and they are holding up great. There has been no water penetration and the clean up is easy with just using mildly soapy water and a rag.
You can mock up a few different trials of different products before deciding on which one is best for your application to see which one works best with the liquids you will be subjecting the counters to before deciding which one to use would be my suggestion.
Which ever way you choose will ultimately be your decision because, well it is your home and you will have to live with it potentially for the rest of your life. Best wishes and you are doing an awesome job on the home.

Ease of maintenance, functionality, colors/styles and reasonable cost. My last remodel for our kitchen (inside) turned out great, using it. Also having a concern with putting the mini-frig down low. Consider elevating to make ease of access better. Bending over to get stuff out is OK for now but again "long-term" having it higher makes it easier to see in and access later. Keep up the video's.. Suggestions: Maybe consider flipping the U, with opening near the side of the house where the entrance is, bottom of the U near the windows. OR making it along the house, backward L, ( _| ) with the Blackstone at bottom of the _|. The cabinet next to the Blackstone (near the window) you might put the door on the outside for storage instead of dead cabinet space..
Then have a semi-free standing bar, (upside down L) shaped bar top, maybe 18-24" wide, with a short return, building it off that post, open underneath, with seating on both sides, so the chef & helper can pull up a stool, sit & visit/play games/watch TV too. You could have 2 openings, one facing the pool/Oak Tree, other closer to the door. It would be more open & airy, close to cooking but not too close.
You'll do what works best for y'all! Love all of your videos! Stainless steel tops would be nice, but price wise, I
    love the tile top idea!
Looking forward to what you do in your outdoor kitchen and bar area.

Hi Andrew, a couple of things you could incorporate into the new outside kitchen.
    1. Can crusher over the garbage bin. This will reduce the volume of the cans, making less this to empty the bin.
    2. You should consider putting a lock on the outside fridge, as thieves will always steal alcohol or beer. Also lock the outside television so it is bloody difficult to steal as well.
    3. Placing master switches for all services outside (Gas, water and power) in your house, so unwanted visitors (Vandals etc) to the house do not leave the grill on, the tap flowing, or electricity being wasted.
    4. A length of PVC pipe of the wall to store stubby holders (Beer koozies for you Americans)
    5. Bottle openers all around the place so you are not forever opening your friends drinks. You can place them under the bench top so your friends can open their own refreshments.
Looking forward to see the final result from Australia

Not sure you even want closed cupboards outside in the humidity. A tote in the pantry with outside dishes & such keeps out mold & critters. You'll pr'bly have food & dishes on folding tables during party. Open shelves hold totes on cooking side during party, it all goes back to pantry afterwards. How about decorative perforated metal for the front of the outdoor kitchen. Could be painted any color (black to match trusses), would look neat and allow for ventilation. My other thought would be durock which could also be painted. The blackstone is on wheels correct? If you removed the side table wings, couldn't you just build a slot in the counter to roll it into and out of if needed. Just like the range inside the house. Lots of ideas in the comments. Can't wait for the build.

You could build a slot, I'm kicking around that idea.

whrer i live used stainless steel counter/tables (the kind they got in industrial kitchens or restaurants or hotels ext.) are pretty cheap...maybe that would be a good option. at least for part of the kitchen
