Band BIO
The band formed in July 2013. Singer/guitarist Miku Kobato, formerly an employee of a Japanese maid café, envisioned forming a band that juxtaposed the maid image with rock music. Kobato recruited lead guitarist Kanami Tōno after an Internet search. Tōno had performed as a singer-songwriter and suggested her occasional backing drummer Akane Hirose for the new band. Hirose in turn suggested bassist Misa, with whom she had attended music school. On July 24, 2013 they had their first live performance at the PP Audition held at Osaka Deep, as a quartet with Kobato on vocals.The band then decided to recruit an additional lead singer and selected Saiki Atsumi during auditions. Their first performance as a five-piece was at the P Festival at Shibuya-AX on August 22, 2013.
Early in their history, Band-Maid regularly performed live at various venues around the Tokyo area. The group released their debut mini-album Maid in Japan in January 2014, written in collaboration with musicians Masahiko Fukui and Kentaro Akutsu (the latter formerly of the musical group Zero). In August 2014, they released the maxi-single "Ai to Jōnetsu no Matador" (titled "Love, Passion, Matador" internationally). In November 2015 they released their sophomore mini-album New Beginning.The album was their first chart placement, reaching No. 64 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart.The band undertook a tour of Tokyo venues to promote the album through February 2016, culminating in a sold-out concert on February 14.
In March 2016 they had their first overseas performance at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington.The group released their third mini-album and major label debut, Brand New Maid, in May 2016 on the Nippon Crown sub-label Crown Stones and JPU Records overseas. That album reached No. 19 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart. In October and November 2016, they went on their first world tour that took them to Mexico, Hong Kong, and six countries in Europe.
In January 2017, Band-Maid released their first full-length album titled Just Bring It. It was preceded by the single "YOLO," released in November 2016. Just Bring It reached No. 16 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart.[26] Band-Maid appeared at the 2017 Golden Melody Awards and festival in Taiwan on June 23-24 The maxi-single "Daydreaming/Choose Me" was released in July 2017. They covered "Honey" for the November 2017 Mucc tribute album Tribute of Mucc -En

LOVE you guys enthusiasm. After listening to Unseen World several times through I think it is now my #1 favorite album and I am 58. The skill & courage of this band is just astounding. I think what strikes me most is the apparent lack of personal ego & that they really care about how the fans experience the shows/music. This Band cares about their fans as more than an income stream and it shows in every thing they do. I posted a simple message on the live "Warning" video they just dropped and I mean it with all my heart; Please, Bandmaid; never stop!
Gotta admit, my favorite part of both this song and the live performance they did was Miku screaming "DON'T SAY YOU LOVE ME"

It's too quiet on the studio recording. When she let loose on that live stream, I just about jumped out of my chair. Who would have ever predicted Miku would become the band's screamer..?
Her scream in the live online okyu-ji was phenomenal. I had to go back and replay it a couple of times when I first heard it. I was like "That's Miku? Really?!?!" So good.

that one straight up got em good! u can see they both were being impressed with the breakdown, and Alan was being blown away by Misa's bass fill, then pidgeon lady distorted scream came in and just broke him. haha, so good!

The ladies absolutely slay on this song.I grew up on 60s - 70s music. Band Maid is on par with any hard rock group from any era. Akane just went wild with the drum fills, frenetic yet under control at the same time. Kanami and Misa are also next level. Saiki and Miku power through the wall of sound with their beautiful voices. One of the best hard rock songs ever ! Great review, great reaction.

The adrenaline rush of great rock combined with the mind-tingling pleasure of layered classical composition, jazz-type drum fills, ethereal bass playing and beautiful harmonies-please! The genie looked annoyed at the unreasonable demand. Then summoned all his powers, and.... out of the smoke, walked five Japanese ladies dressed as French maids! What? I've thrown in good looks and endearing self-effacing personalities, so NO MORE WISHES, he said. And went off to recuperate for the next 50 years.

@@musicplayeralan They played this (and Different, twice) in the 2-hour online show. And like usual, it's even better live. The distortion effect seems completely unnecessary on the album version after that. Miku has amazing power in her voice when she wants to. Extended archive tickets are still available.

@@sendaran IIRC she developed what they're calling the "hairball" voice while working on "Different" but I guess they couldn't find a good spot for it in that song, so they tucked it into their ever-growing bag of tricks and pulled it out for this tune.
@@stevehall5128 first used in Flying High on Conqueror. I do prefer the one in After Life though. It’s more a shout than a scream. I love it. It’s not your typical guttural growl or screechy scream, which I’m not a fan of as opposed to other people.

I heard this song during their livestream concert, and my brain immediately recognized that I hadn't heard it before. The spontaneous excitement generated in the moment was amazing, I can't wait to attend a real live concert.

Actually this song falls under the “Roots” section of Unseen World, which is supposedly their signature, hard-ish riff-heavy songs, but updated to show their current musical capability. The other Half of Unseen World falls under “Progress / Evolution from present”, which would be the actual “different” stuff from band-maid. Songs that they will experiment in and challenge themselves with. No one actually knows what songs those will be yet, but some of the less “signature” songs from Conqueror may be some indication (Wonderland? Mirage? Flying High?)

Yep you got that right. I've been looking at the hands on the cover. At first I thought they represented corals, but now I've had this weird idea. What if they represented the spikes on the Corona virus, it would make the song title "After Life" seem quite apt. After life ended as we know it when Covid hit. Could be totally wrong...Hang on Shock/Horror, serious comment alert :)

What are you feeling? Dunno, but while we joke about your favorite Band-Maid song being the last one you listened to, they really do have that effect on you. I like that they mix it up, so I'd never want all hard and fast all the time, nor would I like all poppier stuff or all power ballads - they mix it up, and between that and the fact that their arrangements are so layered and complex, you just never tire of hearing them. Band-Maid? You just keep being you!

I really LOVE the new stuff, but Puzzle is gonna still be my favorite... It´s hard to choose a favorite, but that was the song that got me into Band-Maid and i was like: DAMN! I´ve NEVER heard something like this before and they wrote it by themselves? WOW! So it´s hard to top that "experience" and i still just adore this song.
Now to your reaction: That was fun... Really nice to see how much you are enjoying these exceptional bunch of musicians. You are really getting energized by hearing their music.
IMO i gonna say that 100k times if i have to: They are the best rockband in the world right now and they gonna prove it with the new album. It´s gonna be stuff in older style from them and new stuff and i can´t wait! I already ordered it and i am excited especially because there is gonna be an DVD with acoustic versions.

The DVD will have MV of a few songs (instrumentals only) showing Kanami, MISA, Akane and Miku playing (one video per person and one combined version). Similar to Dice, Domination and Onset videos that came with Conqueror.
Don’t think there will be acoustic versions. However we won’t know if one of the new songs actually is an acoustic song. That may be possible.

Akane: I reviewed my basic techniques again quite a lot. In usual rehearsals, I mainly try to perfect the songs to play, and when I’m on tours I don’t have time to practice… So it’s more difficult than you might think to do basic training steadily. However, during the couple of months of the stay-at-home period, I was able to do basic training for a whole day, so I think I’ve improved my level a lot. In that sense, it became a very meaningful period."...

This one reminds me of the tracks "Shake That" and "Freezer" from their second album. Neither track had a video, or even a decent live clip (even before the great purge) but audio clips are out there. Freezer has some great back and forth vocals between Saiki and Miku, but I'd give 'Shake That' the edge overall.

Well, guess Kanami wasn’t kidding when she spoke about becoming a Riff machine. This had been my alarm since its release. The intro is just nasty, makes you wanna run through a wall just for the heck of it.

Hey since you guys are reacting to songs that don’t have videos/MVs, what about the B-side from their Different single - Don’t be long? It’s “new” like Different and After Life, an awesome instrumental track written as an Etude for Miku to get into shape to be able to perform Different in a live setting. But you know Kanami... her Etude would be better than 90% of other bands’ songs.

@@RudiTheMan hmm 🤔 but Log Horizon kind of chose it. They wanted something more chaotic and dissonant. Plus the next arc is going to be darker than the first 2.

With the other song DIFFERENT Kanami said she had this song in her archives and brought out the song to match an anime they were ask to create for 2 years ago. That was from a post Miku and Kanami had on UA-cam.

According to like everything I read, when they presented this song on a live show they streamed last week, is EVEN BETTER LIVE, Miku's vocals are on a whole different level, and her scream at 9:27 is way better live too, can't fucking wait for the album and the live performances of everything

That's why some people say Akane sounds like a male drummer. It's not normal for a lady (a small and thin lady, ha) to play like that. Of course you've got Nao from Maximum the Hormone, and she's a beast! Akane not only has that power and technique, but also the cleanliness in her sound you mentioned.

The riffs in After Life actually remind me of some riffs in Brand New Maid. Even though this falls under their ‘Roots’ album, it feels somewhat fresh. Band Maid only needs a few songs in odd time signatures and they’ll attain full progressive status, though I wouldnt mind if they keep playing in common time
