  • Discover the Joy of Crafting Your Mosaic Base! This tutorial explores the process of crafting a mosaic substrate using fiberglass mesh and thin-set. Unveil the potential for unique dimensions as substrates can 'undulate,' offering distinct and unexpected artistic depths. Learn how your tesserae can securely adhere with thin-set. Dive into this technique embraced by many contemporary mosaic artists, but remember, opt for a quality powdered thin-set, not pre-mixed.
    Enjoy the creative journey with 'Make it Mosaics,' fostering your innovation!

    Thank you for your video. I think this is similar how I built up my mannequin head for hair with mesh and thin set. Being plastic the thin set worked with the mesh to stick

    Hello Bonnie and Kim! For a small outdoor house number sign, would you consider this to be an appropriate substrate? I want to avoid buying a huge sheet of Wedi if I don't need it.

    Can you cut out shapes from the substrate (like a fish)? If so, would you do this when it’s partially dry, like when it’s cured overnight under plastic?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  5 років тому +2

      I would probably cut the shape out of the mesh before doing the layers with thin-set. Although in theory you could cut from cured piece it can be tricky to get clean cuts with a box cutter, so would recommend using jigsaw with a proper blade for concrete. Just thinking it would be easier to make the shape out of the mesh first, and you could maybe undulate it a little, the belly pop up or the tail flip. Food for thought. Thaks for following us!

    Hi
    Could you tell me a good thinset to buy?
    I see people using ones with fibres, and maybe polymers? but they are only sold in UK
    looking for a brand I can get in Canada .
    Thankyou
    I’m newer to the mosaic world
    And I appreciate your wonderful videos

    Thanks for sharing this video! With the curved method would I need to use a latex product mixed with the thinset?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  7 місяців тому +1

      I did not do an admix, but as a habit I use a high quality thin-set so i’m confident. FYI I tried using premixed thin-set once and it did not work, it may have been latex based and latex polymers are different than acrylic additives, acrylic has similar chemical composition as thin-set. Not sure answers your question!

      Yes could be used outside for house number, especially since it is not "handled" very often. Depending on size would dictate how many layers of mesh. Have you seen this video - lots of insights here about house numbers. Thank you for being a fan!! ua-cam.com/video/d-reAQfmQyM/v-deo.htmlsi=9rmP95OkMRyxslP3

    hello, I am making a large wall mosaic and i wondered if this is the best method for creating large pieces and then hanging on the wall? or is working directly onto the wall easier?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  5 років тому +3

      I avoid working directly on the wall for as long as possible! I prefer to work on a workbench in my studio and then "install" or hang the artwork. Size has everything to do with your decision if making your own substrate. The larger the piece the more layers of mesh needed to create the substrate. There comes a point it is easier and more cost effective to consider using Wediboard or a similar type substrate (remember interior vs exterior considerations when it comes to substrate selection). If you wish for a permanent wall installation then I recommend an indirect method (mesh, face tape or reverse methods, all explained in both of my books and a videos on our channel demonstrating all of these methods). Good luck and thanks for your interest!

    Would it be possible to use this method to do mosaic on top of a wooden table?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  Рік тому

      But why? The concrete (thin-set) is not a surface you can wash off with a sponge if table is utilitarian. Tell me you intention for the table? You can mosaic directly on the wood.

    this may sound like a dumb question but when you say plastic from the dry cleaner do you mean like the bag that covers your clothing after its been pressed? Thank you so much for the great videos

      I most often use LATICRETE, which I believe is available internationally - visit their website for a store locater. I also use MAPEI. Good luck!

    I want to make a beret for a sugar skull. can I build a substrate over an actual beret that I have? would shapecrete work?
    Thanks! Denise

    • @pinchpalschannel2640
      @pinchpalschannel2640 7 років тому +1

      Shapecrete is pretty versatile, worth a try. I have not done so just speculation. Alternative would be to carve out of closed cell polystyrene foam using hot wire tool, covered in A/R mesh tape and then slurry (thin concrete mixture). That is a pretty fool proof method. Suggest you refer to Sheri Warner Hunter's book "Creative Concrete Ornaments for the Garden" for formulas and guidance. SEND ME A PHOTO when done, excited to see what you come up with. Good luck!

    Could I use Acryl-Pro instead of ThinSet?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  5 років тому +1

      I tried and it DID NOT WORK, I think too many polymers in the mixture. I was surprised, after curing the piece was actually more like a big piece of soft plastic than concrete. And Acrylic-Pro will "crack" over time.

    If you have any ideas to help me with making Afro American hair look on my mannequin project I’d be interested.

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  4 роки тому

      First off thank you for being a fan. If you wish to mosaic hair vs just leaving raw concrete (you can color concrete) then you have to allow for the thickness of your mosaic material. The aw concrete can be "sculpted". You could also create hair with wire or fabric, more of a mixed media approach. Hard for me to picture what you are working on, if you send me a photo via email or FB messenger I can better advise. Good luck!

    • @tammyhiller1821
      @tammyhiller1821 4 роки тому

      I think I’m going to build her hair up with either thin set or shapecrete. Then use quilling pieces covered in seed beads to create her hair. I looked on Pinterest and found where pennies were used on a painting. Afro art also had the quilling and buttons. But I’m working on a 3 dimensional object so I got nothing to go on. My first mosaic mannequin turned out great but I cut wavy long hair
