@@TheBandGuide well, I just mixed and mastered my bands debut single. Watching and using the tips on your videos. And I must’ve mixed and mastered it over 100 times. Because of the fact that I don’t fully understand the visual EQ thing.
I agree with the comment above on mixing. This is first time making sense of how to apply, or what position (along the frequency range) to use the EQ filters. I wasn't sure which instruments occupied certain frequencies. Reversing the approach makes it much more understandable. Thanks.
This is probably the best channel for mixing that I’ve come across. Thanks for the info. Hopefully with this info and with practice, my mixes will sound more and more polished on my songs.
This channel is a miracle. I’ve been searching high and low for this exact video. This is so great to have thank you so much, I’ve been trying to teach this to myself with 0 references and 0 help for 8 months and I think that digging in the mud mentality with the help of this shovel you just gave me and everybody else, I’m gonna start digging up gold!
As crazy as it sounds, I personally liked how the track sounded when some of the low mids were taking away. That "hollow" kind of sound was a vibe I personally liked. Also, my man, amazing content. Your explanations are very thorough yet easy to follow along. Thank you for making these videos!!!!!
Colin, this song is catchy, I do not know if you are intentionally searing it into our minds, but it definitely deserves another listen, I just searched it out on UA-cam, the video is beautiful and the mix sounds great. Kudos to the Broke Royals. Keep up the subliminal advertising it's working, I guess I better pay attention to the EQ stuff too
Billy- thank you! I haven’t announced it yet, but we’re about to go back into the studio and we might have a private livestream people can join to be a “fly on the wall”
Colin, I have been doing your course and I just want to tell you it is really amazing! By the 2nd or 3rd video I already felt like I knew more and was looking at everything differently. I haven’t applied anything yet bc I want to go through all the videos first and then I’m going to go through them again and start applying what I’ve learned. But, man, this course is WELL WORTH the money! I’ve found myself saying out loud as I watch these videos, “ugh this is so GOOD!” 😁👍🏻👏🏻 And I find it really fascinating!
Wow, Kim! Thank you so much! I'm really glad you are enjoying it and find it fascinating. That was my whole goal... this is the stuff that changed my mixing life and I hope it does the same for anyone who goes through the course! 🙌🏼
Colin, your EQ course is amazing. It's made me rethink a lot of my mixes, so much so, I've actually started re-mixing them in line with the lessons I've learnt and they sound soooooo much better.
Sean- That's amazing. Thanks so much! I actually did the same when I first learned a lot of this! The best part to me is that... everything in there also helps inform arrangement and recording decisions to help recordings sound better before you even start mixing!
@@TheBandGuide yeah, I've tweaked a few arrangements as well to allow things to breathe a bit more and now realise subtle changes add up to a greater whole than massive eq subtraction or adding. Honestly, your channel and videos have been so inspiring ever since I found the 'make your drums sound real' vids. Not sure I'd be where I am without your excellent breakdown of the secrets of recording.
I have a question. Do the colors for each part (orang for sub, yellow for bass) remain the same on every daw? cuz I give a lot of kids advice on mixing and I think this would be useful to them, but they all use band lab for the most part
Do you have any experience recording (diatonic) harmonicas? If so, which mic/mic placement would you recommend for recording and how can one use EQ to have it cut through the mix without sounding too harsh?
I don’t have much experience with harmonicas but I know distortion is actually extremely common on harmonicas to help them sound less harsh. I would try a few different ones- a distortion plugin, an amp simulator, a guitar pedalboard distortion- and just pick whichever is sounding best to you!
Hey Colin I am 67 years old, my hearing is not what it use to be in my 30s (assuming your age) I have a Steinberg interface (4 channel) with AKG K240 studio head phones. I honestly could not hear any difference in the beginning of your video between the bypass and on functions. Would different head phones make a difference. PS There are a lot of producers my age with my hearing.
Hey Joe! That’s a very nice setup! There are 3 things I’d focus on to hear the difference... 1. The low end in the kick and bass 2. The snare being covered up then popping out when the eq is on 3. The abundance of midrange without EQ I hope that helps!
I’d still recommend doing this on a vocal track to get a sense of our each zone sounds. I also did a video on vocal EQ: ua-cam.com/video/Ex9O1sjUhAg/v-deo.html Hope those help!

Can you PLEASE do a video on what a good EQ setting would be on a modern hard rock song would be?
@@ShaneMcCosky45 What kind of sources (vocals, drums, etc) are you interested in?

Hey Colin, is there a way you and I could chat, and you can help better understand mixing ?
Best recording content on UA-cam, literally life and career changing. Thanks man!

This video is a blessing

Hi Colin, interesting as always. I'll be signing up tomorrow. Just have to wait to get paid. Christmas cleared me out :(
Thanks, John! Man... I understand that... Stoked you'll be joining!
Colin, didnt you have a cheaat sheet with instrument frequency range? I cant find it. 😢

any advice on merging vocal tracks together , when I do it they sound awful!? Trying to save tracks space , then when I merge them they sound bad?????
I would split the Highs into 2 more. I think Highs are from 5-6k to about 9-10k, what is above 10k can be called air. But that's me.
Aye Man do you produce or Master other peoples music?

Why does Mu GarageBand EQ screen look different from yours? bc I use IPad? Hard to follow when I’m looking for icons I don’t have…
Hey I have that lamp too!
You have great style! Haha
finally somebody good at explaining !!!!!! thank youuuu

I need to focus on vocal eq I know thats a little different than the overall picture, I need help on that
