  • The quarrying proces of the Sacred Red Pipestone told and demonstrated by Chuck Derby. This short movie shows in brief the hard labour of the quarrying proces which takes 2-3 months to reach the Sacred Red Pipestone. This labour is concidered by Chuck Derby as a mission to provide the Sacred Red Pipestone to the people so the people will be able to pray to the Creator by the Cannupa and is used in all ceremonies. Allthough there are still some quarriers left, for the future young Native people will be needed to learn the skills how to quarry to continue the quarrying of the Sacred Red Pipestone. Only Native people are allowed to quarry the Sacred Red Pipestone. It would be a lost for the world if the skills of the quarrying proces of the Sacred Red Pipestone would disappeare.
    "Without quarrying, there will be no Sacred Red Pipestone. Without Sacred Red Pipestone, there will be no Cannupas. Without a Cannupa, there is no ceremony". (Chuck Derby)

    Chuck you are and will always be missed. Chuck was one of my teachers for many many years. He and Billy Bryant were a great help in my learning of the quarry ways and the making of the pipe.

    I believe my Mom and grandparents knew the Derby family back in the '40's-'60's. Then we all moved away. My family always spoke of the local families working the quarries with respect and friendship when mentioned. My family was the Milligan family. They lived at 422 East Main. We still have our family pipes that were given to us and are now handed down to each new generation. As a child, my grandfather Lloyd would take me on Sundays to the quarry to visit and talk with the families working the quarry. Then we would walk the trails. He would reverently tell me the stories and history of each part of the monument. I always loved going there with him.

    There was a native american man i knew who quarried the stone in pipestone town and crafted pipes and buffalo figurines from them. He gave me the stray bits of red stone left over from his work and taught me how to carve basic buffalo figurines. Once i had a chunk of red rock that i thought was pipestone and it took me with some extra help a day and a half to muscle the rock down into a buffalo figure using hand tools and partial cutting with a powertool pen saw. After i put the finishing touch of melting beeswax onto it to give it a nice dark red polish the piece didn't look half bad for an amateur craftsmanship. It was shortly after that i found out i was working with a much harder grade of stone known as red quartzite. I gave the piece to my former foster mother.

      Fabián Lergman First of all you just don't get one because you want one. Those pipes are wakan. They have to be given to you through vision and dream from the Creator.

      It doesnt matter why, you should forgive her anyway to help yourself. When you forgive it lightens your soul and helps you move on. No kid is better off with a parent who committed suicide, i hope u find ur peace another way.

    How much is the price for a Cannupa ?

    • @ascending13
      @ascending13 10 років тому +4

      The price for a Sacred Pipe is a life of self sacrifice and the commitment to serve in a spiritual way the People, the Mother Earth and the Creator. Pipes can be made and sold for money, but a Sacred Pipe come to you in a spiritual way and you fast with it for 7 days and humble yourself in front of the Creator and ask if you are ready to carry that respopnsability during all your life. Sacredness and spirituality can´t be sold or stolen.
