Jesus Christ... i was not expecting a video from 2015 with 12k views to be this well done! How does this not have more views?? Amazing stuff man!
Me at 2021 :)
me at 2022 :)
Me at 2023 :)
I cant believe i have never thought to do this. Recently getting into glitch art and this video is kickass.
this aged beautifully
criminally well done
I love this video! It's made with such care, I appreciate being able to introduce myself to glitch art! Than you!
THE DOGE MADE ME LAUGH LOL
Your interactive site is really dope.
is there anyway to predict which changes will corrupt the file as opposed to just introducing artifacts? or is it purely trial and error
it depends. the way the data in a media file ( like images && videos ) is organized has a lot to do w/the compression algorithms that produced that particular file. if u come at this from a a programmer's perspective then yes, it's very predictable ( && the answers can be found in the compression algorithm itself ), that said glitch art ( as a process ) is partly about trial && error >> && can be seen as it's away of approaching unfamiliar territory ( predictability is less a part of this equation ). So yes very predicable if u come at this from a more algorithmic perspective, but no, not very predictable if u jump right into a file the way i describe. that said, u will start to notice certain patterns that give u somewhat more predictable results, check out Ted Davis' piece "Header Remix" to see what i mean: www.ffd8.org/header_remix/
Es lo que estuve buscando hace tiempo, gracias por esto! Me encanta :) Saludos desde Argentina.
thank you very much, this is cool
Exactly what I needed
love the vid!
This video is amazing
i can open an image file with the notes app but i cant make open the corrupted version in no software i have, help?
may I ask what muzak you used for the ends(l/t)ate? [Also, I'm very into the new /thoghtsonglitchart/ tysm for this]
+Luke van Oene (Gnomebodyknows) it's one of UA-cam's packaged royalty-free trax... i just searched "elevator music" && found it

amazing content
thankyou for sharing
hi! i have tried this method several times but every time i try to reopen the file i get a "file type not supported" error or a "corrupted file" error... how can i fix this in order to see the image!? i'm on windows 11
I can't really do any of this succesfully. I always get messages as, the file is too corrupted to be displayed etc. Do we need a special method or program for it?
these vids are a few years old already && as software/platforms update, techniques for exploiting cracks in the system become "obsolete". Glitch art is less about specific methods or programs && more a general way of thinking + misusing programs. i've got some updated guides here: nickbriz.com/databending101/
@@NickBriz Thank you a lot for the answer, but I guess I left the comment a bit rushed. I watched the rest of your videos and lightly researched more about glitch art and internet art based on what you also said, about it being more of a practice and way of thinking.
(TL;DR I got excited about basic databending and left a comment. :P)
To be honest being on the internet for almost all my life and only now understanding the "mechanisms" and overall spicy stuff, both behind in front of our faces, is kinda exciting, but there is really a lot of work to be done.
I am going to dig a bit deeper today.
Also, the dogee
Windows 10 - says "We can't open this file" every time after editing in notepad...?
yea, this can happen ( on mac too ) for different reasons. like i mention at around 2:47 sometimes when things are "too broken" by the Operating System's standards, rather than showing u the glitched image it'll opt for an "error message" instead. u can do a few things to get around this [1] try making smaller changes or making changes at a different place in the file [2] try using a different program to "bend" the file ( maybe wordpad instead of notepad, maybe something else? ) [2] try using a different program to view the corrupted image ( maybe a browser, or photoshop or something else capable of opening image files ) [3] try using a different operating system, for ex: linux ( its free, my favorite version is ubuntu, u can download it onto a USB stick && boot up ur computer from the USB stick instead of from ur harddrive where windows is installed )
I have a new computer..Win 10. I was able to make glitch art on my previous computer which ran Win7.... so it's not just you.
I have windows 10 and had the same problem. After looking around on google I discovered that it's hex vs ascii problem. So if you edit with a hex editor you will be able to open the image files you save (as long as you don't break the file structure - I've discovered that .jpg files have a header which you need to leave alone). Notepad ++ is the hex editor I use.
@@NickBriz oh so you use ubuntu or linux. i was wondering how your desktop and programs/apps looked so clean and minimal. i hate windows. i work with ableton live sound design also dabbled a bit in graphic design. learning. thank you for the uploads
@@jasoncaldwell0613 i do use linux, but what u're looking at in this vid isn't linux, it's a website i made: nickbriz.com/thoughtsonglitchart/

with what text editing application can you open with a png?
only one way to find out, experiment! (most text editors will open a png though :)
Hi sorry I'm not digitally literate in the slightest. When I tried doing this it just corrupted the file and I couldn't view it?
yep, that happens. glitch art is a process of trial+error which requires lots of patience. try different files, try making small (iterative changes), try starting in the middle of the file (rather than the top), start with simple file types (like jpgs) && work ur way up to more complex types (like 3D files) as u practice. most of the time files won't open, but sometimes u get a wonderful surprise. +++ i have more info && updated tutorials here: nickbriz.com/databending101/
Thanks for your response! I've just been messing around with notepad++ and audacity I can't wait to find some more ways to do it :) so glad i found your channel
wow!
great, thanks! But can someone tell me what is his interface? its not winows or mack, i think.
right, it's neither! i made it myself: nickbriz.com/thoughtsonglitchart/
@@NickBriz wooow! Nice! Thanks alot!
what text editor are you using? how can i run the bended code after ive manipulated it in notepad?
It’s a custom editor I made for the website, u can use it here: nickbriz.com/thoughtsonglitchart if u’re on Windows I’d suggest notepad++ instead of notepad (b/c u need an editor that works in “plain text” rather than formatted text)
I can't find the part 2
+Stefan K. all videos on my channel >> ua-cam.com/users/NickBriz
Text Editor doesn't work the same anymore :(
yea... that tends to happen eventually (this project is over 7 years old) but i've got an updated Text Editor over here: nickbriz.com/databending101/
problem is hpw to use this software on PC not mac
the "software" is web-based (link in the description), meaning it will work on any platform w/a web browser. in this screen recording i'm on Linux (but it will also work on Windows or Mac), it's a little old at this point (2015), so might be a little buggy, but if u're having issues i've got updated/related tutorials here: nickbriz.com/databending101/ (work best on FireFox)
is that a real desktop
nope, i made it. u can interact with it here >> nickbriz.com/thoughtsonglitchart/
